Undelete a character from years ago

i deleted a death knight years ago that was what i used as my main in wrath of the lich king. he was the character that i got shadowmourne on, and i deleted him because i was an idiot.

is there anyway to restore him now? i dont see him in my list of deletes, probably because he is so old.

is there is a cost to restore him if it is possible? i would love nothing more than to play him again

Characters level 50 or over shouldn’t ever be purged and should always be recoverable. But that is the new level 50 post-Shadowlands level squish. An 80 in WOTLK would only be 30 or so now, and 30-49 only last for 120 days before being purged. If it’s not in your deleted character list it’s likely not possible to recover at this point.

i dont remember if i played it in legion. i am pretty sure that i played it in draenor. would that be level 50 now?

No. 50 now was 120 during BFA. 100 during WOD would be 40 now.

Make sure to select the server they were on before using the undelete option too. If you currently have a different server selected, you’ll only see the recoverable characters from that server.

The “Restore Character” support page also has this little tidbit:

If a character doesn’t appear on your list, it means it was purged from the database because it was deleted too long ago. Purged characters cannot be restored by any means.

So, there seems to be an undefined likelihood that a character that was deleted an undefined “too long ago” may have been purged.

My thought is, if the character was deleted in Wrath, it would’ve been level 80 then. It wouldn’t have its level dropped until logging in, so there is a chance the system will still see it as level 80 and not purge it completely. But yes, definitely check the right server.

However there is also a chance that it would be converted to the new level structure which would make it sub-50 now.

While that’s true, characters 50 or over (current level 50) will not ever be purged. The concern is that while the character was 80 at the time, it will probably only be 40 now thus below the threshold.

its definitely not in the undelete button. i tried many times. I was hoping there was a “special service” to undelete it from a backup or something.
im really kicking myself for deleting it.

The last I looked, level rescaling doesn’t happen until you log into the character for the first time, so a max-level WotLK character should still be level 80 in the database.

But that’s still as good a theory as any.

Yeah, there’s no extra service beyond the undelete option.

That said, I think Sniperorc is correct that the squish doesn’t take place until you first log into the character.

Are you positive you have the right server selected?

Yeah that makes sense but we’ve never given a 100% official explanation of how the level squish interacts with deleted characters as far as level thresholds. Only speculation.

We’ve only been given explanation of the level squish as it pertains to existing characters that just haven’t been logged in.

the servers are currently down, but i will try again when they are available again.

Do you remember a name/realm?

That’s why I felt the need to highlight that catchall. It doesn’t explain how or why your character may be unrestorable. It’s just like

My experience is that it is displayed at the new, squished level, but is still retained per its level at the time of deletion. I have a couple of death knights that I created at level 55, ran through the DK starting experience, and then deleted. They still show up in my undelete list on Blackrock, even though they are displayed as level 24 (or thereabouts). They would have been purged long, long ago if I had deleted them at that level.

Arnold, I’m glad you found yours!
