When I attempt to socket my crystallized horror into the mace with the sha-touched socket, I am unable to do so. It displays ‘You can only equip 0 items in the crystal of fear category’. This is pretty upsetting

its intended, we aren’t suppose to be able to get those gems until after sha dies in toes but because they gave ppl the chance to farm them in celestials, you can farm the items before he comes out, you will be able to socket ur gem whenever he is released

Minimum base ilevel req of like 502 I think it was… Welcome to 12 years ago.
That is BASE item level as I remember so means upgrades do not count.

no that’s not it. If you see the item on wowhead it looks like
Unique-Equipped: Crystal of Fear (1)
whereas mine in-game looks like “… Fear (0)”. I just noticed this.
If you want some feedback on what the experience of celestial spam is like for anyone unfortunate enough to get one of these weapons early, I would say please bring back LFR.

Doesnt need confirmation. The quest that gave you the gem originally was from defeating Sha of Fear. If you read the quest text, it took everything from the Sha of Fear version of the quest. Its very clearly intended to be unavailable until Sha of Fear is out so everyone has equal footing on access to use the gem. It would be unfair that some could use their legendary and others could not.
The situation is not as you say. The ability to acquire the gem in MoP rerelease exists in the game right now. I didn’t ask for it, yet it is there. It would be a tedious thing for most to pursue because most players haven’t obtained their weapons. Should the Jade Serpent quest have been pushed back to coincide with the later raid release? Probably. But there’s no information anywhere suggesting you wouldn’t be able to use it if you get a weapon. The developers created an objective for the player that wasn’t intended, the process for which wasn’t particularly enjoyable but the reward made it rationally worth pursuing. So yeah, some leniency isn’t asking too much here.

Just like in original MoP, the gem is only useable once you finish the quest chain. The chain ends with killing the Sha of Fear in ToES. It being “pretty upsetting” that you cannot use it now is just baby-rage.

Well that would make this gem the only time gated quest reward in the game, with no information anywhere suggesting that this is the case. I only did the grind because you created a means for me to acquire it. Otherwise I would not have done so.
They are time gating LFR items as if it was retail like they delay wing releases (not sure if they still do over there) you think they wont gate a legendary quest reward? you expect a bit too much here
Again not the case, an accessible item in this game is the same as one the player is able to use immediately. There is no LFR vendor that sells dead weight unequippable LFR items. The gems appear to be uniquely time gated in a manner inconsistent with how item progression content is released in world of warcraft. Or, a bug?

you got 2 weeks to sit on the gem till than it was on you for bum rushing straight through the quest knowing full well the OG requirements of getting the gem, i am pretty sure even back than you had the ability to get to the point of needing sha of fear to go down before the release of it you just had to get very very lucky with all of the drops needed.
I’m in the same boat. I understand that the gem itself was originally unobtainable until the Sha of Fear was killed. But then adding a side route SPECIFICALLY for MoP classic to get the gem beforehand, and adding the sigils of wisdom into celestials to enable said side route and be able to subvert the Sha of Fear quest into the Sha of Doubt quest TO FINISH THE WHOLE SUBVERSION. After all said and done it seems like they implemented new things into the game to allow you to get the gem early but then simply forgot to change the unique equipped coefficients for the gems which probably changed in code on release of the next raid.

OG requirements went out the door when they changed the requirements for the quest on release by allowing collection of Sigils of Wisdom early. If we are using logic from that point on you’d assume the change was meant to allow you to get it early, only strengthened by the fact that they added A WHOLE NEW QUEST IN that allows you to acquire the gem EARLY. Why spend time writing new quest code for something that if what you’re saying is true is COMPLETELY REDUNDANT and doesn’t matter because people need to wait until killing the Sha of Fear anyways?

It’s a bug and oversight from blizzard, no reason they’d write new code and create a brand new legendary item (Chimera of Doubt) as a objective of the subverted Sha of Fear kill if not to allow early acquisition.

It’s a very similar situation to the Talisman of Binding shard, which case law suggests a ‘okay let him have it’ decision. Just based on forum history, Gigachimp and I are like, 2 people that pay and play the game in a pretty conventional way, and we’re a little blindsided by the way this is being handled.
Yeah it just seems silly to allow acquisition but wall us from actual socketing. Knowing blizzard and their team of 3 managing all of Classic servers it’s just a logistical oversight in terms of coding. All the people saying this bug is “intended” probably think all the broken golden lotus quests are also intended
