We couldn’t even get a Cairne cameo in one of the Myst Ages of the Afterlife.
I think Blizzard forgot Cairne exists.

I think Blizzard forgot Cairne exists.
I mean, I think Xal’atath’s killing of Khadgar, and calling him ‘Guardian’ before she Death Ball’d him and Dalaran, might be a hint she’s not quite aware of as much as she lets on.
Medivh said, at the end of the Warcraf III RTS, that the world no longer needed Guardians.
In Legion, Khadgar actively rejected the position, and powers of, a Guardian, seeing it as a trap that made the whole world entirely reliant upon a single, powerful individual to protect it, and an inevitable corruption of that same singular individual due to their incredible power.
We also know Khadgar made a trek to the Shadowlands on his own and went on some sort of journey of understanding through the Realms of Death, and as both Medivh’s apprentice and a member of the Council of Six, Khadgar had access to a lot of knowledge that we, the Champion, never had.
I do think Khadgar’s gone. As much as it hurts, he’s an old man, he’s tired, Xal’atath broke Atiesh, Staff of the Guardian like it was a twig, and she had the Dark Heart, a relic specifically designed to absorb and transmute arcane energy into void energy, and she absolutely Shrek’d Khadgar right after he expended a huge amount of power from the legendary staff trying to destroy her with that beam attack.
But he reached out to the Void at his death. He teleported Alleria away to save her from Xal’atath. He still had some power left, and I suspect his last hurrah was some sort of wrench, however small, however insignificant, thrown into the middle of Xal’atath’s plans that will result in giving us that one tiny chance to derail her at a crucial point in time.
Not only did they forget Cairne existed, they -for the most part - tend to forget that Tauren exist and that they’ve never really fit in to their versions of Azeroth. I mostly accept it, but I’m still a little bitter.
I did find it interesting that she called him Guardian. I felt like even though he refused the title, he’s been the de facto guardian regardless. And I also have always felt like between his knowledge and raw power, he’s a bit stronger than Jaina.
When he said this wasn’t “the” fight and sent Alleria away, I thought they might be leaving that open to interpretation - as in perhaps he knew something of the future as a guardian might because he had powers we weren’t aware of, or perhaps he was just making an educated guess.
For what it’s worth - I used to be angry that Blizz mostly forgets Gnomes exist but then I realized their writing has a tendency to turn awesome amazing characters into total trash and ruin entire plotlines, so now I’m grateful and I hope they never ever focus on Gnomes.
Ever.
You make a fine point. In my time here, I have found that the Tauren RP community has done a much better job than blizz in fleshing out the race and its lore.
We don’t see Khadgar die though? Seems more like she used some void spell to take most of Dalaran (it has ‘power’) and him away. We see his hand and arm sort of turn to cosmic dust but we don’t know exactly what that is. If he winds up not being dead, that’s because she didn’t kill him in the first place.
I also hated the earthen euthanasia quest, so bad.
Whether he’s dead or not, the scene of his defeat and Dalaran’s destruction definitely is not the whole picture. Something else happened there. Time shall tell.
I’m only in the second zone, but Xal hasn’t shown up again yet. Maybe she’s busy doing something with her winnings?
I’m also still trying to connect the dots between the radiant echoes and the content we’re seeing on the island. So far, I’ve seen no more visions. Were those a sign, or merely a response?
I’m not getting those any more…now I’m getting the star raid marker over every quest giver or turn-in. I’ve clicked on the picture and teied turning it off, and it comes right back…even with all addons turned off. I would much rather have the three dots back. Far less intrusive.
Khadgar returns as VOID KHADGAR and we unlock a new allied race VOID HUMANS which are humans with only four hair cut options that are edgy and goth colours and they have a variety of purple/blue skin tones and their new racial is Void Diplomacy which gives them a a passive increase on reputation gains.
The dark heart probably should have been a tank tinker in remix. “Take damage, do more damage back” type thing.
I’m assuming you meant the one where you help an earthen make a lantern and undergo the tradition of handing over their duties to their apprentice/caretaker?
As somebody looking into the legality of that due to some medical issues on my end, I felt it was handled … relatively well, and with dignity. It is not a pleasant thing to face, from either side of the fence, and the quest was oddly respectful of the whole situation, which is rather rare for Blizzard.
We’re used to collect X poops for new gloves kind of quests, and pop-culture references. Not “Yeah, you’re gonna die and its gonna suck.” quests that hit us in the soft spots.
Yeah I have my own experiences and thoughts about it IRL-wise, felt very odd in a t-for-teen fantasy game. I’ll leave it at that.
Meanwhile:
Faenduin
Xal’areia
The Tauren, Troll, Gnome, Night Elf, Dwarf and Draenei RP communities do more for their favored group’s lore than Blizzard does.
Forsaken need not apply because Blizzard decided they were a fascist cult of personality and every forsaken supported it even with their freedom.
Argh, I’m obsessed with the Arathi now, and wish I could roll one for RP, but I just can’t find a way to make that work that doesn’t feel… main character-y.
Very true. Tauren is just what I have experience in.
THE EARTHEN SHUT DOWN CHAIN HAD ME FEELING THINGS. But fr when my dad went into hospice it was similar so watching little cartoon rock man messed me up real bad
The Korgran questline was incredibly well done.
I think for anyone who’s had a parent or grandparent dealing with dementia or Alzheimer’s or even just aging and not being able to live how they had, it very much tugged on the heartstrings.
Protip:
When you go to board the Lamplighter Skiff for the first time, it’s not an actual skiff and you may hypothetically fall off the dock to your death.
I’m not saying I’ve done this. I’m just saying, wait until you get that green arrow that lets you click on and board the skiff.
My mom had dementia, So I’m glad to get a heads up about this before heading into the quest. I’m sort of dreading it.
