"Trolling" Forum code question

Hi there.

When you flag a post for trolling, do the GM’s only look at it if others do as well or is there is this something that they would check no matter to make sure?

Also what is considered for that?

I see a lot of people when they start losing discussions/getting upset resort to insulting arena rating or mythic plus completions.

Is it an offense to say to someone "Sorry you don’t have a valuable opinion because you didn’t do a M+10 yet or your arena rating is 1500) (Which in some cases, the person doesn’t even do arena)

Just wondering if it’s worthwhile to report that since others probably won’t care that much. I just find it kind of rude to all of a sudden add a personal insult to a discussion to try to “win” the argument by insinuating that the person doesn’t know what they are talking about based on their armory or whatever.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you feel it is wrong, I would report it. At the end of the day, all the reports are seen and processed by Blizzard staff.

There’s a section just regarding trolling in the forum CoC:

Thanks!

I read through that but it’s vague but it seems like “Causing disturbances in forum threads, such as picking fights, making off topic posts that ruin the thread, insulting other posters”

Would that be applied appropriately on insults to armory data ?

These kind of comments always make me smile a bit - only because it’s often only based on the posted character and not taking into account that most, if not all, of us have more than one character

Against the rules? Maybe. Ignorant? Absolutely!

I agree. I mean it’s quite sad if you need to do that to “win” an argument as I find that everyone’s entitled to an opinion no matter what their “obvious” results are. And in most cases, the retort is injected with zero context simply to trigger/insult versus actually having any relevance to the discussion.

And yes, it’s possible that they are insulting someone with more experience on other accounts toons as you stated.

Additional reports can add weight but even a single flag generates a report for our Moderation staff to look into it.

Trolling tends to be one of the more complicated categories we have because is can be extremely subjective. A lot of what we look at is covered in our Code of Conduct. Though when it comes to trolling most of the obviously inappropriate comments are when it includes naming calling or otherwise insulting someone, picking a fight, etc…

We also try to look at things like: Does the post promote constructive discussion or add positively to the community?

Obviously, a strict adherence to the above would require us to delete half the posts made. We try to find a balance.

It can be, yes. Some folks put more value in similar experience and if they believe someone doesn’t have a specific rating or gear score, etc… they may not believe the person has a proper perspective or experience to understand the particulars of the discussion. For them, that is a valid opinion and they aren’t necessarily wrong for having it.

How they interact is another matter entirely. They don’t have to engage with the person with the opinion they don’t value, nothing is forcing them to, but they would do well to avoid insulting others, name calling, etc.

It’s hard to say, Dervish. If they are rude, that doesn’t necessarily fall under trolling, if they are insulting, that may. If you feel they are crossing a line, feel free to report it and one of our Moderators will be able to review it.

I think, at least in my opinion, it would depend on the context. For example last season my arena rating was just barely 1500 if I remember correctly. This does lend me more credibility about this range of arena than somebody at say 750. Not much mind you.

For mythic plus, if you are clearing a 15 with ease, you have more knowledge of higher plus runs than somebody that struggles with a 10. So if the context of the conversation is difficulty at higher levels, as long as not used as an insult, I think it is valid to point out the discrepancy and for. Lack of a better way of saying it, lack of experience at higher content.

Edit. And Vrak said it much more eloquently than I did.

I hear you. Thanks for these details.

I guess saying something like “nice 1500 arena rating, on wonder you have no clue” all of a sudden in the middle of a clash of opinions would indeed be trolling especially since the discussion topic had nothing to do specifically with arenas or whatever.

The other aspect is that in some cases (Like for me) I generally don’t even do arenas, logged in one afternoon in 2014 for fun and got an achievement so since I have no rated data in years, they would be basing their “insult” on someone who doesn’t even do them. (But does a lot of other kinds of PVP, etc.)

I’d ignore them. There’s a difference between having an argument to make, and just attacking people.

People usually lack the first if they’re doing the second.

Yeah such a frail/weak way to try to “win” a discussion.

It is all in how it is said.

For example. Ppm nice rating is not ok IMO. However stating that the brackets do indeed get more difficult at 1500 1550 VS 700 is a valid opinion. That is more my point.

That’s trolling. Report it.
