Don’t get me wrong. As a child of Austin I grew up a Garriot fanboi. But his games were more a sandbox than a fantasy setting. The world was semi-interesting and dynamic, but there wasn’t much of a story. There weren’t characters you cared about and the “story” while wild, wasn’t exactly a classic lol. Garriot almost certainly pioneered the PC RPG genre, but while his games were technologically impressive the story usually wasn’t really the hook.
I’d almost give you this one but I still think SE pioneered the true lore-based/story driven rpg genre in modern video games
Origins System was Founded in 1983. Coincidentally, they released Ultima III in the same year. Not sure how long it was in development for before its release, however.
SE was founded in 1975, although Dragon Quest didn’t come out until 1986.
Sierra Entertainment (formly know as On-Line Systems) was founded in 1947. They developed Mystery House which was released in 1980. King’s Quest I was released in 1983. The original Space Quest would be released 3 years later.
FFXIV is designed around the 2 second GCD because of the amount of off GCD abilities.
You only hit level 20 so guess what you never got to see that.
Yes I think you belong in Retail wow because with your logic classic would also be bad. This is because of how simple the old systems for wow are. Most classes in old wow don’t use a lot of abilities for people. Think about most caster like warlocks, or how hunters use 1 button macros.
For Wow I never felt I used my whole tool kit unless I was in pvp.
As for your second reply if you’re enjoying Wow classic then keep playing. However if you don’t understand mechanics of another game because you only got to level 20…then honestly you need to just avoid the conversation. Getting to level 20 in Wow has similar issues. This is how MMO are designed. Same with many single player games. The more abilities you have the more involved the games gets.
I originally took down my 1st reply cause honestly I feel like I’m trying to talk to a brick wall when talking to Wow players about FF same with talking Wow to FF players. I feel FFxiv is a better designed game except in pvp. It’s taken a decade for more people to switch and I spent over a decade watching Wow player crap on FF…yet most people that crap on FF never made it past level 20 like yourself. Or got bored with ARR story (yea it’s slow)
Even still I enjoy both games. Maybe try to get past level 20 next time. If you don’t want to try it again that’s fine. Before I pass judgment on an MMO I always try to get to max level. Mmos are generally built for max level combat. FF just has the story element being a major factor.
Most MMOs are wow is definitely the only MMO to have super smooth combat animations. This is because old blizzard was always good at that. Its what made blizzard games so great.
Game play in skyrim is clunky yet people love all the elder scrolls games. I can’t stand them because they feel dated and not well done. So yes I agree with you on that.
Even still wow combat isn’t special. Seriously pve as DPS is boring in classic. Tanks aren’t that much fun as well. Spell batching was great as a healer but even back in the day people tried to simplify it. The original heal bot would select the right heal.
To me the only thing Wow has on FFXIV is smoother transition on abilities. Mostly animations because of FFXIVs animation lock. Again old blizzards were the best in the industry for solving that particular issue. So yea it’s going to be better for that 1 item. And that 1 item is more about animation than what the ability will do vs its animation. Warrior is clunky to me.
Honestly most games feel clunky compared to blizzard made games. I feel overwatch is less clunky that TF2 yet overwatch is a copy of TF2. I think we have to see if they manage to keep that in the future.
You get use to It in FFXIV just like you would in any other game. I got used to it in skyrim. Yet if blizzard made skyrim I know it would be smoother. Again this is because of blizzard reputation at making animation work.
Also I’ve seen worse in other MMOs. Have you played anything other than wow? Or just a wow player? I played warrior as a main from vanilla to cata. I came back and classic and realized it was very clunky. Yet animation were fine. I can’t stand warrior now because how clunky the class is. Yet I enjoy shaman because it feels less clunky. It’s funny saying that because Totems are very clunkyhence why they got rid of them later on…cause it was clunky. It’s why stance dancing wasn’t viable in pve after a certain point and it became more for pvp. Stance dancing was clunky.
Saying clunky for a game needs more detail than just “clunky” what did you find clunky about FFXIV? Animation, class, swing timer (lol slam in wow/swing timer)
I just find wow has super smooth animation but it’s combat for some classes are clunky. Yet the smooth animations make it easier to accept the clunky.
To simplify Wow has smooth animations yet some classes are clunky like warrior and shaman.
FFXIV has animation locks that make it feel clunky yet they have classes that make this easier to deal with.
Both games are clunky in terms of certain types of clunky.
What class did you get to level 20? Was the animation lock what bugged you? Are you saying clunky because you only hit level 20 and didn’t get non GCD?
I can call lots of thing in wow clunky except animations. So can you explain what you mean by “Clunky”
Im playing TBC classic because I am having fun. Unlike others here on the
forums, so it seems. I actually quit when I am no longer having fun.
Like I did with FFXlV which I played from the very beginning (the shut down version)
and the beginning of ARR.
I thought the same 2 years ago, and I’ve been playing WoW (still do) since vanilla came out.
There’s some cringe inducing things in FF not gonna lie, but that’s just the cultural barrier and perhaps, i just play FF for the raids and Triple Triad so i never pay attention to the cat girls in skimpy outfits. Perhaps, cat bois are 10x cringier if you ask me.
