To Jani’s ever growing dump pile.
Maybe something to do similar to “look how awesome the scrapper is!! Everyone uses it!!” (After stopping us from selling Azeroth gear to vendors) - this ‘development’ team would like us to mainly be funneled in certain areas.
Although putting that mini pet quest outside COT this patch is ugh (either super petty or “see? Lack of portals doesn’t stop how popular going to Tanaris is!”)
I’m not an investor in anything or an economist or an expert of any kind, but I would imagine any shareholder who gets confidence from that is an idiot. Restaurants don’t want people staying and taking up a table longer than they have to. They want as many people in and out the door as they can get per day and repeat customers. A book store doesn’t care how long you spent perusing the shelves, they want to make sure that the products they carry are popular enough to buy. That’s why they label and organize where everything is so that customers don’t have to spend as much time looking for what they want. A game is no different as far as I can see. The product and it’s popularity is what matters.
It doesn’t make sense for a multi billion dollar company to use this idea. They haven’t said that they use this model (only players claim they do). Like I said, if there’s even a shred of proof beyond player speculation then it might have some weight.
Hey, I can see what you’re saying, too. I’m no expert. I’m not some harrumphing old gent planted in front of an old fashioned stock ticker. I do know that they used to provide some annual report listing the number of active subs, though. What I hadn’t known until another person mentioned it, was that they’ve stopped doing so.
For me, personally the port revamp poses no issue. As a long time player, I have all the rings, toys reps and Last relic of Argus. I can get where I need to go just as fast.
Then why do they have this graphic showing hours spent playing on page 84 of their November 6, 2015 Investor Day Presentation?

I just clicked on that one first, but feel free to look through them all to see if they all have that information:

They stopped releasing sub numbers years ago. The “time played metric” theory actually popped up not long after that, maybe in response to the fact they stopped reporting numbers.
All I know is that them trying to squeeze out every minute of play time just so they can “make shareholders happy” doesn’t make sense and I’ve learned that if it doesn’t make sense then it’s probably not true.
What people get confused about in all of this is timegating. True timegating like the darkshore questline in legion where you could only do so many quests per week and then next week you could do more. Not WQs and rep, not flying and pathfinder.
Why would they timegate anything? Because players will do the entire gambit in one sitting if they can and then complain that they have nothing to do which breeds negativity due to the player. They’ll claim “there’s no content” when in reality there was, but they chewed through the part they wanted to do in 4 hours or 6 hours and screwed themself. If they add even more then the players who say they have a limited time to play and it’s too much will be upset, and if they let people do it all at once then the issue I explained above happens. Its a compromise to keep players on the same page, not a way to inflate content.
The irony here is that this is the exact type of bonehead move that will only further discourage players from leaving hub cities. And more likely to sit there waiting for queues to pop.
Why is it that when I look up through the open roof in the portal room, it’s dark outside?
Why is it that when I look up through the open roof in the portal room, it’s dark outside?
It’s an illusion. Can you find that skylight anywhere outside of it?

Definitely no time played in the 2018/2019 presentations. Looks like they stopped reporting that data.
The Alliance one at least is roomy and very well made.
It’s quickly rising hotspot for mage RP on RP servers at the moment.
Don’t you guys love how there is a portal to Aszuna now and not new Dalaran??
A portal to somewhere no one asked. lol
So why trash it? It looks amazing, just add the new portals back.
Don’t you guys love how there is a portal to Aszuna now and not new Dalaran??
We have a Dalaran Hearthstone.
Wouldn’t a portal be pretty redundant?
Whenever I see your name lol.
Jake: Vod, Vod Kanockers. That hat.
Unless you’re like me and have limited time, so I just get less accomplished than I wanted to now.

I made this toon the night that episode first aired. It really cracked me up! You nailed the reference!
made the world feel small. Without them the world feels bigger.
the biggest joke a dev can say.
“feel” is a dumb thign to fall back on.
its subjective.
and the world didnt FEEL small nor did it FEEL large.
It felt normal.
80% (my random guess ofc) of playerbase likely rarely leave main towns, current x-pac zones, and maybe visit some older raids/dungeons every now and then.
that means majority of the world has NOTHING to make you go there.
when was last time you visited Loch Modan?
when you were leveling possibly. BECAUSE IT HAS NOTHING ELSE.
a world doesnt “feel” small becasue of portals.
Feeling small or feelign vast means nothign when your world is filled with zones of void emptiness.
Way you make a world feel “big” is when you make content that makes ppl go to the places that they dont usually go.
FF14 does this by having high lvl content send you to lower tiered areas for specific stuff (example was zodiac weapons back in the day)
I hadn’t kept up and so the portals caught me off guard. I took the portal from new Dal to SW (noticed the other portals were gone but thought it was a lag/graphics glitch) Looked around in awe trying to figure out where I was. it’s GORGEOUS, I was so excited at first…Until i saw the portals in there…Azsuna…really?
Thought no biggie until I went back to new dal to use the portal downstairs to Kara. Then I felt sick, and almost wanted to cry. Even moreso when I saw that COT was gone from Old Dal. seriously…that’s been there since wrath, makes no sense to strip it now.
I’m not convinced of the “slow down the game” argument… i’m more in the “push everyone into new shiny content” camp. Mostly because it would make more sense that they need to show value for creating new content than it does that time played matters much with a monthly sub… but really, like everyone else, I don’t know either. Pushing people into new content also jives with what they did to the twinking community, threatening to remove 110 level locking and host of other changes.
I like the new portal rooms - hate when they remove anything useful. The old world portals, and new Dalaran will be missed - as I have no reason to go there now.
