Transferring realms, same name, same account

I have a character named Zahne on both Arthas and Eitrigg. If I transfer the character from Eitrigg to Arthas will I have to rename the transferee or is there a way I can keep the name on the transferee and rename the one on Arthas?

The system will require you to rename the character being transferred. Character names on realms are unique and cannot be the same.

You can pay for a rename of the current character on Arthas, and that will allow you to transfer without forcing a name change on the character being moved from Eitrigg, but you’ll have to buy a name change first from the in-game shop.

Doesn’t paying for a name change add the original name to a 30 day exclusion filter?

Not if it’s your name on your account.

I see, glad they thought of that and have a solution for it. It sucks that I’d have to buy an additional service just to be able to keep my main’s original name.

Thanks for the quick responses.

An alternative is that you delete the character on Arthas. But if you want to undelete them, it will still require a name change unfortunately.

But it’s an option if you don’t care about the character who is already on that realm.

Who would be flagged for the name change, in the event of an undelete? The deleted character or the transferred character?

Sadly, I do - it’s a twink that I’ve put a lot of time and effort into and the toon I post on the forums under.

Technically, neither are “flagged” for a name change. It would just mean that to undelete the character, the one that got transferred would have to perform a paid name change.

All that said, keep in mind that you can always try to choose a very similar name instead for the one being transferred or even start with a whole new name. It’s not that bad to be honest.

Way back before they they changed all the servers and still had PVP servers, I decided to roll a new character on a “normal” server and on the opposite faction too! It was a whole new experience and believe it or not, I actually really was glad I couldn’t start over with the same name. It felt like a new beginning to be honest. But that’s me

Best of luck in whatever you choose to do. Personally, I’d go with the free name change on the character you’re transferring and make it a fresh start.

While I knew that one of them would have to be renamed - I’d rather have my main (the transferee) be able to keep their original name and have the twink (the one currently on the realm) be renamed instead. Mostly because of the sentimental value I have toward my main, but I can understand if you don’t put as much stock into character names.

I appreciate all the advice you’ve given.

Oh, just to be clear - even if someone deleted the toon on the realm, transferred and replaced that name, they wouldn’t be given a free rename. It would still require a paid name change to even attempt the undelete.

I figured this needed to be stated in bold for anyone who might be reading this in the future. (even though you stated it clearly in your response)

you could potentially see if the name exists on a connected realm and move the toon to that one

Can you transfer gold and items between characters if they are on a connected realm?

Yes. They function as if they are the same realm. With the caveat being that names are unique to each realm.

Connected Realms are a set of two or more realms that have been permanently and seamlessly “linked.” When you play on a Connected Realm:

  • The Auction House is shared between your realm and the realms connected to it
  • You can join a guild created on the realm connected to yours
  • You can trade and exchange mail with players on the realm connected to yours
  • You can party for Mythic dungeons and Mythic raids with players on the realm connected to yours
