Can exceptions be made to transferring characters between accounts when names don’t match? (please read on)
I’ll try to cut it short. My daughter was playing on my account when she was 5. She played (or we did) just one character. Its a low level warlock. Level 34. Obviously this character has a lot of sentimental value to the both of us. When she was 12, I got her her own account. It was in my name with parental controls set up. So back then, our account names matched. When she was 16 or 18 (sorry I forgot exactly when, I just remember she had her car license as we needed to use it) we changed the account to her name using my ID, her ID and the CD keys. Fast forward several years later. She is going to be 21 soon. I have been having some thoughts of perhaps leaving the game.
This character still means a lot to both of us and I was wondering if I opened a ticket an exception could be made to transfer this one warlock to my daughters account as it’s essentially her character. I don’t play it, nor does she as she has her own account now and we don’t account share. We occasionally log into it every couple of years, just to look at it standing in Ironforge.
Is this possible, does anyone have any experience with something like this?
It cannot hurt to ask. Blizzard isn’t some kind of monster (despite what some say on GD). Just be aware, any achievements, mounts and pets will stay with the original account. Those, other than character specific stuff, will not transfer.
This is exactly why we got her a completely separate account when she was 12 and ready to play on her own (with some watching eyes). The helpful forums were the ones that recommended it to me at the time and we don’t regret that decision at all. It’s the actual character that has the memories for her and I. Thank you for your response. I will open a ticket later and maybe just copy and paste this thread as it’s hard for me to explain it really well, but you apparently understood it well.
Was great advice back then, and it still is. (to have separate accounts). However, she was just a little too young for that when she started.
I opened a ticket, and got a response, unfortunately it was not the response we were hoping for but I do respect your rules. I’ll need to discuss it with my daughter more to see if she wants to proceed before I respond to the ticket.
I’m typing this here incase anyone else is in the same (probably rare) situation I am, and was wondering the same thing.
I have been told in the ticket that because the names don’t match, they will not do the transfer - however - there is one alternative…
I need to create a new account, move the warlock to the new account. Then they will move that entire account across to her account. Which from my understanding would mean the character in question would be on it’s own separate account under her battlenet - meaning she would need to keep 2 subscriptions active in order to log in to it at all. Not really the solution we were both hoping for. BTW - it isn’t as simple as that, and our last names need to match, and we show ID etc - which I expected.
I guess for me, I didn’t think this day might ever come - or I would have most likely moved that character across to her account when it was in my name :’(
We need a day to consider it before we do anything, because if that’s the only solution it seems like it might be beneficial to just leave it on my unactive account, rather than having her need a second account, which she’s not going to pay for anyway.
Thank you for responding to the ticket Blizzard. I’ll get back to that ticket… soon.
That is a very odd solution. The rules for moving a game license are the same as for moving a character. To move between your current Bnet account and a new one - names have to match. However - as I think about this, the exception is when moving a license from a parent to a now adult child during the transition request (the one you did involving all your IDs and CD keys). It may be that the char transfer is hard coded as a lock with no over ride but moving a license has more freedom for GM discression. Hmmm…
Hopefully a Blizz rep can clarify. I feel like maybe the GM who answered your ticket is not quite right. Either that or I don’t understand the rules as well as I thought I did!
I have received another response and am very pleased…
I’ll copy and paste this one as it’s relevant to my issue and may be helpful to others
Hey Lisa,
Game Master Swayrrler here today. Hope this message finds you well
I understand you are trying to transfer a character to your daughter’s account. I would be glad to help you that.
First, I am afraid there may have been a bit of a misunderstanding with your case so please disregard our previous message.
I took this opportunity to have another look to your case and since the two accounts you mentioned are within the same family - and as you said your daughter account was once in your name - you should be actually able to transfer the character via the normal character transfer service, more information here:
If you have any other questions feel free to reach out to us.
Have a great day and stay safe!
I want to say thank you very much for taking another look, I clicked the link in the ticket, I’m just trying to figure out how I go about doing that, and we’ll be proceeding with that right away
Thank you so much.
PS (edit) I’m a bit of a dumb dumb and can only find links to help pages with information on transferring characters, does anyone have a direct link where I can do this, or do I need to open a new ticket?
(edit 2) My daughter helped me this and we got it done. So glad this was able to be done. Thank you very much!
She hasn’t logged in to it yet, but it appears to have numbers following her name like its flagged for a name change - I’m assuming because the name was already taken by my account.
I’ve re-opened my ticket in the hopes we can resolve this one last hurdle - release the name from my account so she can rename it the same name.
The name being changed is hard-coded into the system. Unfortunately a GM won’t be able to bypass that. However, there’s a chance that once the name is released by your account (should be 30 days down to the second), that a GM might be able to assist
