Back in the '70s, when feminism was starting to gain ground, there was a meme (before they were called memes) of, “biology is destiny.” That is, your biological sex determined your roles in society, which meant women should stay at home taking care of children, not out working. Biology was all.
An extreme position and inherently wrong.
Now, the opposite narrative is being pushed: biology has No Influence Whatsoever ("Gender is a social construct’). This is just as extreme and just as inherently wrong.
The narrative should push for equal rights, not to ignore basic facts. Overshooting the mark discourages empathy for the cause.
To me the entire sports thing is insane, especially since the NCAA is going along with it.
Take gymnastics for example. Men compete in 6 events: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel and Horizontal Bars. Women: Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise.
One focuses on upper body strength and the other does not. The difference is so obvious, how do they think this is ok?
Original topic wich has been derailed as far as i’m concerned, I don’t know why people bother with the olympics it’s so boring…
You know what would be fun? Watching specialist units from Countries Militaries, Marines, Sas, Swat,Seals, Special tactics etc compete against eachother in a series of paintball tournaments
Clearly the solution is to make different sections or something else entirely in my view.
I tend not to engage in Trans sports debates though.
Why? Cause if you delve deep into you realize a lot of people arguing this don’t really care about sports, let alone women sports. It’s usually a topic brought up to justify transphobia by focusing on an even smaller minority in a group that is already a minority.
That’s not my case at all. I’m a woman and former athlete so this subject is very important to me.
But sure, this is because I’m transphobic and has nothing to do with the example I gave where men have 2 more events in gymnastics because of how much stronger they are.
I’m aware, which is why I said that the people organizing these events need to find a solution that doesn’t harm biologically female at birth competitors.
But what I’m also aware is that sports arguments often come from a place of intentional transphobia I’m not obtuse. This may or may not be you and that’s not really for me to decide. There is a very obvious reasons why this topic gets brought up so often even though the average trans person isn’t an olypmic athlete
Haha there’s no way a thread like this doesn’t look like this 500+ replies in but damn this didn’t disappoint…was following two arguments where people who don’t understand math were patting each other on the back for being smart, and one where someone didn’t know what the word brave meant…and now we’re at men’s gymnastics?
I wouldn’t shut it down either if I were a mod, they’ve gotta be close to bingo by now in the office
