Things to help safeguard folks on this:
Verbally agree in chat what you are trading for. Timestamp it. If a scam happens, this chat log makes the job for the GMs super easy in confirming said scam.
Be slow to trade, this can let you visually catch those trying to be sneaky.
I’ve also heard putting in 1c on your end and taking it out (or not) will make you do the confirmation window.
I agree, I’m a Vanilla-only player too, and while I remember this scam happening once in a blue moon, now it seems like every 3rd post in trade is something along these lines.
I think there’s some new tech for sure… a weak aura or something.
I don’t dispute the scale may be different, and perhaps facilitated by bugs/exploits that did not exist in Vanilla. But the fundamental concept of trading large sums of money directly to unaccountable, unknown level 1 toons is baffling to me.
how can they trade scam you?
the trade can’t be done unless both of you press accept, so wait till put his items and he press accept then you press accept.
Note, even if he use what so ever 3rd party to try to scam you, it will require you to press accept once more, so if you simply never pressed more than 1 accept u will never get scammed.
Was told I won’t be receiving my scammed gold back.
Hi there, Mordeath,
I am Specialist Game Master Marrekwethir, and I hope your day is treating you well so far.
I’m very sorry to hear that another player misled you about an agreement. Due to many variables involved with item reimbursement and types of scams, restoration is not guaranteed.
Sometimes we may be able to recover lost items or gold when an agreed upon trade is made using the in-game Trade interface. However, we are unable to support “under the table” type agreements that do not use the Trade interface. These agreements include things like guild sales, dungeon/raid carries, personal loans, and gambling casinos, for example. For this reason, these types of agreements are always at-your-own-risk, and we highly recommend avoiding them if you are not dealing with a player you know personally and trust fully.
***** IMPORTANT!!! *****
In WoW Classic and Cataclysm Classic, ALL forms of Trade and ALL scams are unsupported. Please always proceed with caution, and work closely with trusted players for any agreements and exchanges. Always double-check the Trade interface carefully before clicking to agree to complete the trade.
To sum up, we will be unable to restore the gold back to your character.
I know it is not the answer you had hoped for, so I do appreciate your understanding. If anything else comes up that we might help with, let us know. We are more than happy to help out with anything that we can!
As far as I know, this exploit is new. I’ve never once been scammed or heard of people being scammed, prior to WoW Classic’s servers going all open borders.
That was only really a problem on the biggest servers.
It still happened on the low/medium pop servers but not to the degree it did on a server like Tichondrius.
Even back in Vanilla the biggest servers(Full/High Pop) were breeding grounds for toxicity.
