This is a repost of the above linked article, which is now locked. I think it’s worth discussing again and I haven’t seen another thread as well-put together as this one. Here’s the content of that thread. I’ve slightly modified a small piece of it for clarity.
TLDR Requests:
- Increase duration of tents to a minimum of five minutes.
- Remove previous tent when placing a new tent.
- Tent placement should function as the Vulpera “Make Camp” racial ability.
Now I will go into more detail about the above requests, along with my general feedback.
Cooldown: The difference between cooldown and uptime is great. In roleplay, this can allow us more of a grace period so there’s not an awkward shuffle to get it back up immediately. That is, there’s less immersion breaking.
However, I humbly request that the duration for tents increases to a minimum five minutes, while the cooldown stays at two minutes or changes to four. This unfortunately means that, in the case of griefing, it will stay present longer. However, it would be a similar uptime to the Aspirant’s Stretcher, another useful rp tool.
One issue with the cooldown vs. uptime, though, is that placing a new tent does not get rid of the old one. This causes clutter. It would be better if placing a new tent removes the old one, similar to the monk statues of Niuzao and Yu’lon, or the warlock’s demonic circle.
Additionally, this has good bones (referring to how the toy works, but the actual bones on it are pretty sick). Future tents emblazoned with faction designs can be built from this. I recommend giving all future tents a shared cooldown- similar to cooking fires- that way only one can be placed per individual at a time.
Placement: Placing a tent is challenging. It almost seems like the orientation of the tent’s entrance is locked to points on an invisible map, or that it is chosen at random. This makes using tents in rp (or other uses, such as screenshots) difficult.
I would prefer if tent placement worked like the Vulpera “Make Camp” ability, placing the entrance to the tent at your back. Obviously it would just be using the ability’s placement functionality, the fact that it has little purpose beyond aesthetic should remain.
As for being unable to place tents indoors or in cities, these are both fine and good. It limits how much clutter can be placed in areas with heavy traffic, and is realistic- most people wouldn’t place a tent indoors. Though I am an advocate that the general playerbase can use toys like this responsibly, and allowing tents within cities (but not indoors) could make interesting scenes during events like guild recruitment or markets.
