Tool is a good band. For polyrhythms, non-standard time signatures, etc, my go to is jazz fusion, prof rock/metal. Stuff like Virgil Donati, Symphony X, Holdsworth, etc.
And then there’s some really avant garde orchestral music. Like John Adams, Phillip Glass, Alarm Will Sound. I forget who did it, but one Symphony the composer had the brass section crumple up their sheet music and throw it to the woodwind section, totally unknown to the woodwinds. It was a take on spontaneity and it could never exactly be replaced, because next show that same woodwind section would ready!

Nah… no such thing. Every band offers something different, of all the bands I listen to, I don’t have one I regard as best. Just lots of great ones. I wouldn’t listen to them if I didn’t like them.
Which brings my to my point. “Best” is always going to be totally subjective.

Tool was a rip-off of Korn.
Look at the drum work. Unreal guitar sounds. Bass groove. Weird time signatures? You’re boy Maynard don’t know nothing about bagpipes, son. 
Listening to 7empest now, and just like… what time signature is this?? Turns out Danny’s in 21/16 for most of it. But he jumps around. Bass is in something totally different. I’m just like…

I honestly never heard of these guys before. If they are sooo great, why aren’t they a household name like KISS, AC/DC, Metallica, and Black Sabbath?
Because the music is complicated and full of depth and not easily digested by the masses.
But just because it’s not well known doesn’t mean it ain’t great.

How are Metallica, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and KISS not complicated or deep compared to Tool? Are you saying those bands use dumbed down metal/hard rock? Such slander against those bands.
As a huge fan of AC/DC, Sabbath and Metallica and someone who hardly ever listens to KISS…yes, those band did not ever and are not now making music anywhere near as complex or innovative as Tool does.

Yes, those bands are super dumbed down. They do not compare to Tool. That’s not a bad thing though… I like all those bands too. I went through a 5 year Metallica phase and have every album. I’ve been to 3 of their shows.
Just because it’s dumbed down doesn’t mean it’s not good. There’s a lot to be said for simplicity.
But Tool is miles beyond those bands in almost every way! Complexity, musicality, innovative, creativity, etc… Tool is legit the BEST!!

Observe: The range of Robert Plant’s vocals.The smooth, quirky bass-work of Jimi. Bjork’s dedicated drum work ( she plays upside down in shows), and the playful, lilting strumming of lead guitar by RZA.
Wrap it up Toolcels, A Perfect Circle owns waaaaay more then your sorry band
