[Tinfoil] Was the first DK free just for the Retail mount?

Did we get our first DK free (not required to have a level 55 on the server) only to entice Retail players to come get a mount?

Like retail players wouldn’t level a non death knight to 55 or buy a boost themselves on a non DK to get a level 70 so they could then make a DK for a mount.

A side effect of the free DK sounds like it leads to more bots because now its only $15 for the month sub, no need to buy a boost. So its cheaper for people who don’t actually want to play the game. At least in TBC, the bots and gold sellers we’re paying MTX to make classic profitable and let it continue for us.

This will make their MAU metrics spike for classic, even if there isn’t any actual growth

I’m not sure, but I was thinking the same thing.

Did you also notice that they turned off those new character creations on some servers right before they released this? That was a good idea ultimately and not 100% related, but it does line up perfectly.

well that definitely makes it easier to point out to people that are upset about queues that this promotion won’t affect queues.

I think the two things lining up is more of a coincidence though.

I think it was for people who wanted to play Wrath Classic, but didn’t want to play TBC classic.

They can make a DK if they want without having to buy a boost.

There is undoubtedly going to be a wave of new players who only want to play wrath classic, but i cant imagine even half of them wanting to main a DK.

It seems so, they wouldn’t of done it if it took weeks to level up and obtain…

it skews realm pop for their “help” with queues though. Now they can say that OB has a vibrant population because there’s 20k DK’s on it

Yes well, I think they locked the servers up for the queues and they were always going to do the mount but this all did line up perfectly. That probably wasn’t an initial thought though.

As to your actual topic though yes, I did think the same thing. This Retail mount may have at least contributed to not needing a level 55 on the server for a DK. This is also something that I consider a bit “tinfoil” and not a for sure of a thought I had, but I’m glad to see others were thinking the same thing.

That may be true, but those do want to play one can right away.

I don’t see it as a bad thing.

They could probably make more money by not allowing it and “incentivizing” some people to buy the boost so they can make a DK, but they aren’t.

I think the way they should have handled it is any account who has bought a license for a retail wow version should just get a 58 or 70 boost.

Pro:

  • Marketing can welcome back old players (i think this works well on a psychological level because then old players place value in getting something from their past patronage)
  • Prevents bots and gold sellers from making new accounts with a free level 55 to start with

Cons:

  • Leaves out actual new players (although actual new players might benefit from starting at 1)
  • People who use multiple accounts would have to start from scratch

You need a level 55 classic char to make the dk in first place. I think they trying to boost people play wotlk classic

Your first DK on Classic is free of this restriction. It’s only every DK after the first that requires a level 55 on the server

Well you get free to skip vanila, I guess.

That makes sense 2 logins to different games count as 2 people even if the same account was used to play the 2 “separate” games. They get their metrics up! It the Bobby gets a Boat Bargin.

Blizzard putting selling micro-transactions above the health of the game? I’m shocked!

Well if anything, MTX will go down, and MAU will go up

Call it whatever you want. It’s players paying to exploit the game, not play the game. And it makes it even easier for bots.
