Hi guys, playing a prot pally thats just shy of being pre raid bis. When I group with friends I have a lock doing 2500 dps and have no problems holding threat, but a under geared Spriest doing less than 600 dps is stealing agro fro me. He says he is using fade and I have no reason to doubt him. Ive got salv on him but is there anything else either of us can do about this? He’s steeling mobs from me now, whats going to happen when he gets some good gear?

get an addon like ThreatClassic2 and look at his threat per second vs yours. is yours as high as usual? is his higher than the warlocks’?
If it’s a big problem, tell him not to use Vampiric Embrace.
Shadow priests generate healing and mana for their party with Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch, respectively. Unless the healer is struggling, all Vampiric Touch is doing is generating a lot of extra threat.
It’s the easiest thing for him to cut from his rotation to reduce threat. And unlike Vampiric Touch, Embrace doesn’t do actual damage.
You are not holding threat on a warlock. No one can. It’s just lock stops damage or uses soulshatter to drop threat
Aside from telling the priest to stop using VE, mark something as skull…anything really. Give the dps something to focus fire on and it makes AoE tanking worlds easier.
Tell him to use the 25% threat cut talent if you look at almsot every spriest non use it as there “cookie cutter” spec dosen’t have it but the talent is worth picking up as it allows them to dps freely without pulling when not using VE and when using VE go longer before needing to turn it of for a bit. A skilled spriest is able to manage there healing agro by turning on VE as needed they don’t run it constantly.
Mark something spriest dps is mainly single target use them to FF down the prio mobs while others aoe this allows you to also focus your threat there is never a reason to not have a mark even in a pure aoe pull.
Fade is pretty well worthless as a threat cd. It makes mobs less likely to attack you for its duration it dose not reduce threat. This means the moment it drops you are at the same threat level. It is made to be used when high threat to buy the tank time to taunt/pass you on agro bringing you back to there threat level it dose NOT lower there threat on the standings like FD or vanish. IF he is not STOPING what he is doing when he fades he is using fade incorrectly. Fade is only there to buy him time when near pull or after pull to allow you to get back to the top spot while his dots still tick and can be renewed to prevent snap shoting loss (stoping all other agro gen) or to let the dots fall till you get threat back.
Also you are not holding agro off the lock a lock doing 2500 dps is doing WAY more threat than a spirst doing 600. Even if the spriest has no threat talent and is using VE and maxing all possible threat gen that tps is about HALF of the locks 2500. The lock is soulshattering (that IS a threat dump for 50% agro, unlike fade) and killing of the targets quick enough for him pulling to not matter. As such a spirest at 600 dps no threat talent and doing everything he can to produce agro such as maintaining VE (where the healing is effective meaning not overhealing as the party is not toped) is about EQUAL threat to that 2500 dps lock after soulshatter. While the ones left you are able to taunt so your not noticing as much that is all. So if the lock is not pulling and he is it shows that not only is us using VE when likely don’t need (if lock is doing 2500 dps mobs don’t live long enough to require spirest heals as healer wont oom first) and he doesn’t have the threat cut talent, as otherwise the lock would easily be pulling first in fact the lock still is likly pulling first.
As a side note you should have 2% threat on gloves enchanted its cheap and he having -2% threat on cape its also cheap and no reason to not be using them even on temp gear. They cost about 30g for the +threat one. The 2% swing both ways is about a 6% greater leeway to pull slightly more when adding in salv due to how the three stack together. This is significant and why pritty well every dps uses that enchant.
Vampiric Embrace and Mind Blast cause insane amounts of threat. If you are having trouble holding a shadow priest ask them kindly to tone down the mind blast usage.
