TL;DR: Survival and marksman are in the crapper, beastmastery is in a good spot, back in legion they should have gone with beastmastery instead of survival if they had to change a spec into melee instead of add a new one.
Ive always enjoyed messing with hunter since ive started but never really got into it enough to consider it a main. The way hunter is right now is… a kind of pathetic mess, namely because of marksman and survival. Beast mastery is in a good spot, and judging by the alpha will continue to be in a good spot going through shadowlands.
About the melee hunter fantasy: I really enjoy this concept, and it had potential to actually be a fun and engaging idea, however the only way they could have messed it up more is to make it with marksman… thankfully they werent brain-dead enough to do that. The way survival is right now lacks any identity or focus which is a damn shame. It used to have an amazing identity even if it wasn’t usually the top pic. When legion came along and they revealed that they changed it to melee i was down, and i enjoyed how the spec felt for the majority of the expansion. During bfa, while a lot of people say they have improved it, to me it feels like a downgrade and they just made too many weird choices going from legion to bfa. Regardless, while i am happy we have a melee spec option for hunters, i feel that Beastmastery would have made the transition to melee much easier and would still hold its identity very well. Fighting alongside your pet in a vicious frenzy … just seems right. That said i dont have much to say about beast mastery as is now, the majority of hunters seem to like the spec as it is now.
Now on to marksmanship. I think bellular said it pretty well. It cant decide if it wants to be this cold and calculated sniper, or a hyper agile legolas type class that will unload their entire quiver in seconds. Personally I like the cold and calculated sniper over the coked out trick archer. I really started to like it towards the end of legion after taking some time to get familiar with how it played. Even now, i do kind of enjoy it but it just feels half baked… less half baked than survival by far, but still just … i guess 3/4ths baked? It has potential but bfa feels like it’s kinda ruined 2/3rd of hunter, even more so than a lot of people think legion did with the survival changes.

You made another thread about how you hate Surv and THINK blizzard did terrible and THINK the spec has bad fantasy/theme. When they are well designed and loved. When it doesnt fit BM but fit its own style. Then you add something related to Bellular about MM.
Um. I don’t see anything about the OP “hating” MSV, nor that he “thinks” MSV has bad fantasy/theme.
He pointed out that he likes the concept of MSV – or more specifically, melee hunter – but believes that Blizzard could done a much better job (and that it would’ve been better received had it been BM that turned melee).
I think you’re projecting a little here.

you sure he just didn’t get a silence for a bit? i mean you’re free to do what you want but i don’t think being kind or loving to these kind of people will change their behavior. my brother certainly hasn’t even though my parents have spent thousands on him in spite of years of lying, sneaking drugs/alcohol behind their backs, and stealing. though i could be jaded from an outlier.

In all seriousness, I didn’t like that the first comment on this thread to be such a Debbie Downer, which is why I responded the way I did with a much more accurate summarization of the OP. I knew my comment would be the second, and that people would see it.
Imagine posting something like this unironically. We’re not allowed to THINK that melee SV is a bad spec based on personal experience, data and knowledge of the Hunter class and its mechanics. But Azagorod here is completely justified to THINK that it is well designed and loved just because he hates Hunters.
Talk about a double standard.

You are mistaken sir. I actually like MSRV, but it needs a lot of work. Ultimately i think they shouldnt have erased RSURV even though i never really vibed with it. It was unique and thematic regardless of how good it was, and has pretty much no chance of matching that thematic strength while being melee. Meanwhile you can match the class fantasy of beast master very easily while still being melee. That is what i was getting at. TBH the only hunter spec im not huge on is BM. I primarily play MM ans Surv when messing with hunter at all. I dont hate BM and i think it is the most well developed of the specs currently. Please dont assume i hate something just because i criticize it.

BM probably would have been a better choice for melee and probably went over better, but honestly, I think making any of the hunter specs is not a great idea when you already have so many other melee options. That said, what’s done is done. Just give back RSV as a 4th spec and then they can make melee survival back into a pure melee spec, everyone wins.

You think it needs a lot, but it doesn’t. It only needs number tweaking. With SL they might need more change due to the loss of certain azerite perks. You think it should fit more BM because you think BM is what Rexxar was in WC3… the two BM are not. Also why Blizzard changed Rexxar to be Survival.
The theme fits perfectly and well as the primal hunter modernized.
BM the one that makes his pet do the work.
MM the one that fights, sometimes with a pet which is not essential.
SV the one that fight as a team with the pet.
Sorry for assuming that you hate survival, should of simply put it that you simply think survival isnt in a good state. Too much hate assuming going around here.

Well now that you know the type of person we’re talking about. The term Karen came about because more often than not, the type of person that tends to behave that way are women named Karen. Not all women named Karen and more people than just women named Karen, just a common trend that people noticed.
