That’s paying for it, and then some. Most people spend an hour or less in wages on it per month.
Done 3 keys since the release of the expansion. Just throwing it out there for statistics.
Depending on the content you and your friends did/do, you might actually experience the illusion of barren realms. It began with flying. Many people complained that the world felt empty. Now, with dragon riding, people are in and out of an area even faster than before.
Sure, the overall numbers have declined over the years, but not to the extent you suggest. Still, many people got burned out on the game during the pandemic. Some even began to realize it’s just a game and not a way of life, choosing to do something more productive.
Then, there’s also seasonal, weekly, and hourly login times to consider. People’s lives change. They grow up, start families, and eventually, stop playing games.
Unironically Wrath servers feel more alive than Dragonfart servers. That has to do much more with how the two eras operate more so than population though.

You clearly didn’t play during Shadowlands if you think the game’s “dead” right now.
Shadowlands was so empty compared to Dragonflight. There were times where the group finder didn’t even have a scroll bar because of how low it actually got.
The game’s doing much better now. Is it back to its glory days? No. But it’s significantly more alive than it was a year or two ago.
