You can twink to your hearts content in current xpac content.
The problem they have and ill quote one of them directly here is “Its not really a game for anyone, not anymore” and the general feeling summarized was that the game had lost so much of its identity over the years and changed so much that it is largely unrecognizable to them and throwing it in reverse would be impossible.
That is the issue that they had, I’m however sharing theories on how we got to this point, and the issues in the design process that ultimately cost WoW its Identity to a section of the player base. Partially in hopes of catching the eyes of people under new management.
I don’t think it’s just the fact that the game changed, people change over time as well, and interest wax and wane. You can’t expect wow or any game for that matter not to try to evolve with the times and the players.

There’s a lot of truth in that.
I feel for some of them, it was a healthy break point for them and a chance to not look back, but others I feel the genuine sadness they feel when they talk about things they did back then or play games that remind them of that same joy they felt when WoW was new to them.
It makes me wonder what the game would look like today, if the creative process wasn’t influenced at all by marketing.

Technically thats available via Classic wow for the most part, if it’s nostalgia thats got them hooked there are options to relive that “love”.
