I know you’re just responding to him saying Velves have Horde themes, but I’m genuinely curious, is this a problem?
Depends on what you’re expecting out of void elves, I guess. I think it does make them look like flighty pick-me tryhards, at least.
In my uneducated opinion, velves are weird in that they’re essentially an inversion of an inversion; where the horde story tries to style itself as a found family of outcasts and misfits, velves essentially bring a message of “we never wanted to be one of them anyway” and treats them like prisoners of circumstance, narrative damsels in distress and the alliance (through Alleria) is effectively rescuing them from the horde and themselves.
So both the game and WC2 alliance stans don’t see them as “taking a horde-themed race” but “a prodigal alliance theme finally coming home”. Which, if someone wants that, great I guess. But I feel it washes them of any intrigue that you might expect from a playable race of traitors, especially when combined with the sudden near-universal acceptance they receive for it, taking an already-silly idea and flattening them even further.
No… No more Elune for at least two years. Blizzard homogenizes too much towards Elune and her Cenarion children that not even the Loa that frequent the Emerald Dream could get a feature. Tons of Zandalari npcs in raptari armor, no Gonk, no mention of the Loa, nothing from any of them. I have nothing against night elf fans, but Elune writing is where most lore goes to die because if it’s not connected to her closely enough then good luck getting anything about said lore. Let alone a main feature in the story that doesn’t involving killing said lore off or diminishing it.
Blood elves are Horde.
I just look at them as colossal morons with 0 capacity for self reflection.
Do they ever actually say this? I can’t recall velves explicitly expressing their opinions about the Horde other than, we wanted to do void magic and Lor’themar said no so we left and looked for greener void magic allowing pastures, I don’t recall them talking about how much they hated the rest of the Horde and are glad to be gone, but I could be wrong, I’d just genuinely like to see that.
Also, haven’t people been asking for Alliance to be more edgy? I’d say velves saying “your gross smelly found family can kiss my blue rear end” is pretty edgy. More so than “woaah we use the void for good even though other people won’t like it”, which is very boring very well tread ground.
People on roleplay servers may roleplay as high elves, but from a canon stand point Blizzard has made it exceedingly clear velves are not high elves, they even gave them one of the most hideous and obnoxious racials to continously procs soley to remind velf players “YOU ARE NOT AND WILL NEVER BE A HIGH ELF” . So no, I wouldn’t say that velves are fufilling any Alliance themes.
I’m struggling to understand what this means in a WoW lore context. Who’s picking them, who do they want to be picked by? Were belves being Horde pick mes? This is frames the wow universe in a very bizarre way.
Making the most edgy and evil thing an Alliance race has done be being tempted to rejoin the Horde would be pretty amusing, not gonna lie.
lol. Well no, it’s not framed like that, but this is some clicky dialogue from Umbric.
"My followers and I felt no loyalty to the Horde. When Grand Magister Rommath forbade our Void research, we did not hesitate to break away and follow our own path.
We do not stand with the Alliance out of convenience. Nor is it a mere gesture of thanks to Alleria.
Our ordeal has taught us the importance of great powers being in the right hands. We could not allow the Horde to know the things we know, or to use us as a weapon in their schemes.
We fight for the Alliance because we believe in its values. And one day, I pray we will bring all of Silvermoon back into the fold."
But no, them leaving the horde doesn’t make them edgy, especially in the context of this all happening in BFA. Personally I feel stuff like velves or worgen or manari would be the wrong direction to go for making the alliance edgier, but I think it’s too late to really make that work and they’re making a whole separate Avaloren kingdom as a future scapegoat for that stuff anyway, so meh.
That’s more just me being derisive of Umbric’s character. There’s a bit in the alliance BFA war campaign where he gets all worried about failing the alliance or not being worthy or something like that. I remember being put off by how nauseatingly saccharine it was at the time.
I’m not simply talking about leaving the Horde I’m talking about spitting on their found family lol.
Void elves (outside of two unique newcomers to the fold) expressed very little about the Horde in any way. They were foremost Quel’thalas nationalists, to the point they were willing to go into exile instead of give up research they felt was absolutely vital for its long term survival. They were not even loyal to the regent lord, they were loyal to the kingdom itself and what they think it stands for.
Thinking about it, Quel’thalas has itself always been a bit of a fair weather friend for both horde and alliance, honestly. The true core of the faction is orcs, trolls, and tauren—Everyone else is in orbit of that core. Some are closer, for sure, but they are not part of that core.
To be fair to the elves, both factions have tried to murder them. Including when they were members of either faction. I’d be a fair weather friend too in that situation.
The only consistent friends they’ve really had are draenei and nightborne.
Such a narrow minded view. How about the OGs instead? Amani, Ogres and Steamwheedle cartel?
Thralls horde is the one that is playable. Anything else is a wish list.
