The WrA Video Game Thread

I’ve fallen into the pit of Warframe a few times, its grindy, but the grind is satisfying IMO. Recently done a couple play throughs of DA:I which is SUPER fun too. The “We Were Here” series is a total blast if you have a friend you can play it with. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the third installment!

Yeah, I know a lot of people who don’t want to play Warframe because they say it’s grindy… and honestly, it is, but it usually doesn’t feel like you’re grinding. The combat and stuff is fun, so you don’t typically feel like you’re just mindlessly pressing buttons hoping for a drop, BUT…

There’s also so many rare-rare-rare parts for items, weapons, or frames that it gets old running missions over and over or endlessly farming survivals because you know Digital Extremes wants you to buy the latest Prime Access pack and urghGhhh

Yeah, that’s what turned me off from Warframe, actually. I can handle a bit of grinding, and I know it’s a free-to-play game, but the fact I have to do many many old missions again and again and again just to get rare items and parts pretty much killed my desire to play further. The gameplay itself felt kind of odd as well.

I’ve been debating on grabbing Borderlands 2 on steam; I have a soft spot for pulp settings, and Outer Worlds is too far away to scratch that itch. Presently going through Hollow Knight, which is an excellent game. Occasionally playing through Odin Sphere for the hundredth time.

Seeing the Nier train still kicking makes me a smidgen bitter with all of its crossover promotions, not to marginalize its success of course. It’s forced me back down my hole into the insanity that is Drakengard and lamenting how a spinoff has thoroughly overshadowed its predecessor. All these whippersnappers missing out on a meta-commentary addressing the slaughter of hundreds for entertainment and the cognitive dissonance required to justify murder as a solution for saving the world.

Impotently shakes Hymir’s Finger

counterpoint: there was a lot of legitimately gross stuff in Drakengard and Nier + Nier Automata aren’t nearly as… questionable

I completely agree.

The thing with Warframe is that I’m having so much fun running on walls and shooting space zombies (spombies) that I’ve barely even noticed the grind. It’s a very satisfying gameplay loop.

Yeah, because you’re probably pretty low rank and able to get tons of gear easily. You can get this or that weapon easily, that warframe drops commonly, etc.

Wait until you’re farming prime parts >:|

I don’t even play Warframe, but I enjoy the worldbuilding.

Speaking of Warframe, Echo is a great little game with a similar aesthetic and interesting concept that should definitely be played.

But I’m already building my first primed Warframe and have multiple prime weapons!!

Yeah, wait until you get to the ones that don’t drop constantly. They all have varying rates for each part. Enjoy!

There’s only a handful of new releases I’m looking forward to. Persona Q2 is coming out in June & I just can’t wait to see Minako again. Cyberpunk 2077 will come out whenever it comes out and it’s looking pretty good. And there’s a visual novel, Arcade Spirits, releasing on the 12th I’m eager to play.

I’m basically just playing WoW and an assortment of VNs. Thinking about going back to SWTOR soonish: it’s been quite some time since I’ve played and the allied race grind is starting to wear on my soul so we’ll see what happens.

ARK : Survival Evolved has become my new crack.

I spend ridiculous amounts of time on a unofficial server in addition to slowly chunking my way to victory in a solo campaign, and I’ve tackled the Alpha versions of the Broodmother, Yeti and the Dragon, and now I’m on my second attempt at the Alpha-tier Overseer before I go to solo-mode in Scorched Earth.

In the server, however, I’m quite happily plodding along as an farmer specializing in producing Ovis, with a herd now of thirty-strong sheep, four Daedon to keep them alive should I get raided while at work, four Troodons running around in the same ‘field’ as the Ovis, which is littered with clusters of Savoroot (potato) crop-plots to provide cover for said Troodons as well as a steady supply of food for the Ovis troughs, and a pair of mated Megalosaurus that lurk inside my barn as the penultimate ‘get lost’ defence for looking after my core breeding-team for the Ovis program.

I also have a full thirty Plant X turrets scattered around the place and ten Heavy Auto-Turrets placed around, primarily, my home and the barn, with four of them at key points around the fence and the field to absolutely sell the impression “DON’T TAKE MY STUFF” that I’m trying to push onto the Raider Clan.

It’s not working too well, but Discord is rife with cursing and laughter considering the Raiders rely heavily upon their Wyvern and Gryphon mounts to keep ahead of and away from the Kingdom Clan and the Farmers/Solo Players, and running into my defence network has ruined their day more than once.

I’ve lost eighteen Ovis, two Daedon, four Troodons and multiple turrets, but all of those can be replaced, tamed out in the wild or bred back into existence by my remaining stock.

Gryphons and Wyverns cannot breed and thus must be tamed in the wild, and while Gryphons are difficult but still soloable, Wyverns require stealing an eggs, killing a female Wyvern or Alpha Wyvern for their milk, slowly waiting for the egg to hatch in the middle of a freakin’ inferno and then the even slower progression from hatchling to juvenile where a player must be present to keep an eye on the hatchling, keep it fed, protect it and keep the bonding mechanic going to get the most out of the mount in a combat capacity.

I think the Raider Clan has lost five Wyverns and twelve Gryphons to my network of torpor-inducing Plant X turrets in the past two months to the point the leaders of the Clan have actually told their lower-ranked members that losing any more flying mounts trying to raid my farm for Ovis and mutton will result in them being booted from the tribe until the offending members replace twice the amount of animals they lost in the raid.

evil cackling and mustache twirling

I’ve also managed to open up a tavern just a short walk from my farm that also operates on the Honor System, ie you’re free to take mutton, lamb chops, beer, vegetables, medicines and the like, so long as you put whatever my ‘price’ is in the tribute chests, be it five ingots of metal for a piece of mutton or twenty stone for a beer. It’s working quite well thus-far and I’ve actually been helping a few of the other farmer-players get built up to proper farms rather than random slews of buildings slapped together.

Two of them are also going into the Ovis business and I’m planning on splitting my Ovis herd into thirds to help them get started, and the remaining three want to specialize into crops and eggs, so I’ll be reducing my tradable vegetable crops to just potatoes and berries so they can make their own mark. I’m still going to have a small amount of the other crops for my own personal use, but helping the other farmers be the sole bulk-producers of Rockaroots (carrots), Long Grass (corn) and Citronal (lemons). It’ll make the trading scene a lot more balanced since I won’t be the sole bulk-supplier of everyone’s crops, wool and mutton, so if I get trapped off ARK for more than a day again, there won’t be a small riot because people going out to tame alpha-level carnivores will be able to use sweet, sweet mutton to speed up the process.

Have you tried Atlas at all?

I also liked ARK and I’m wondering how the pirate spinoff is.

Not as of yet. I want to FINISH ARK before I even think of looking at Atlas.

Trust me, you should avoid it.

The short version is that it’s a lazy reskin of ARK, and it bombed horribly. More info here: x_https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-65GtCwfy24

Lately it’s been Assassin’s Creed Origins. I finished Odyssey in December and I’ll likely be going back to it soon to finish the current DLC after it gets tweaked.

Been debating going back to Dark Souls 3, too.

chroma prime is the best looking warframe of all time

unfortunately chroma sucks

How do you all find all this time?
