HEAVEN OR HELL

DUEL 1

LET’S ROCK

Godspeed! I have a habit of dropping what I’m doing and listening to bards play in the city. It’s not a great habit since I’m trying to progress, but by god is it just nice to listen to.

me every time I warp to the limsa aethryte:

I like your funny sounds music man

there’s always going to be “toxicity” in any sort of RP community because roleplayers live for drama and pretending there isn’t any in ff14 is laughable

the only difference between ff14 and wow is that the moderators actually respond to reports pretty fast

people suck but its easier to avoid the people who suck in ff14 since they’re not allowed to be as vocal (normally anyways)

So I’ve been leveling archer through Palace of the Dead.
Currently level 19 without completing a single job quest.

I… I kind of want to see this through and level to 80 without even touching a job quest.

My point is this: people claiming the FFXIV is somehow “better” is kinda …just not accurate. It’s literally the same community, just hiding some of the nastier aspects to avoid a ban. Once you get past surface level niceties, you find out it’s the same old crap you find in any MMORPG, because it’s the same crowd migrating between most of those games.

I currently don’t play any, so it’s not me favoring one over the other as I really don’t care at this point, but it is what it is, and that’s the same community with a fresh coat of paint.

I’m not a WoW player and haven’t been for a few years at this point. I just check in now and then to see what’s up and if the game is still tanking.

This guy gets it.

In the post you quoted Kazimir says that this very thing you describe is already much better than people being openly toxic/provocative without fear of being banned.

And I tend to agree:
I know that everyone in my neighborhood would let their dogs poo on my lawn without picking it up were it not for the neighborhood’s rules. But the rules are there so I get to enjoy a morning jog without seeing dog poo everywhere. Its unironically “somehow better” this way.

And I think that distinction matters quite a lot. It’s not always the best solution to just fling your thoughts at everyone when they occur, and filters are a great tool to use. Overall, my day-to-day experience in FFXIV is much more positive thanks to that. And if that is largely due to a “curtain”, then that still means my experience is more enjoyable.

This doesn’t stop at social interactions either. Duty Finder, Party Finder and raids? They are far less competitive than WoW. I believe being competitive in a healthy manner is good, but WoW has long passed the point of “healthy” to make it their sole focus. And with more and more tools to measure players and to beat them up with, this issue isn’t going away any time soon.

DPS meters also exist “below the surface” in FFXIV, but they are an unspoken thing - Yoshida accepts that some players (including myself) use them to improve our rotations, but the moment you try to shame someone or talk to them about their DPS, you get a slap on the wrist. And we accept that, and in turn I won’t bring them up to others or lecture them about DPS, which I haven’t done previously either. It is another example of something existing the same way below the surface, but the way people act on the surface changes the entire atmosphere of how these things are being used.

I also think it’s not the same community. Obviously there is some overlap but I’ve ran into plenty of people where people never even played wow and this is their first MMO. And this isn’t rare. I don’t think it’s merely this surface level community in hiding of their real feelings. Most of the toxic wow people probably didn’t come over or didn’t stay long.

No. It absolutely objectively is better. Because it’s moderators actively, rigorously take action against abusive behavior in a way WoW’s will not.

Square Enix has never hired anyone to go up on stage at FanFest and tell me to kill myself for playing an au ra or whatever, so if nothing else, the FFXIV community is much better in that the developers don’t actively contribute to the toxic elements of its culture.

It is, actually <3 Not having people call you slurs to your face because they’re afraid of being banned is a whole lot better, actually

Anyway it’s clear from your earlier replies that you are deeply uninterested in FFXIV so idk why you’re even here, dude

unequivocally better

i dont get stressed out by doing content
i dont see horrible evil garbage in my rp
i do see people getting suspended or banned for doing bad things
i do see people, on a whole, having this same experience as me.

i can actually play a tank in ffxiv without worrying about my time being wasted because a bunch of edgy gamers decide “OH, WORTHLESS USELESS HUMAN, IM GOING TO INSULT YOU RELENTLESSLY AND THEN LEAVE TO SPITE YOU”. in fact, it is exceedingly common to see people say “im new to this instance!” and see people respond “all good!” or “hope you have fun!”

it is better.

It’s been really nice being able to say “hey, I haven’t healed in awhile, is it okay if we take it slow?” and people being totally fine with it.

Like, the worst response I got to that, if you can even call it that, was the tank just not saying anything… but still pulling slowly and making sure to pause if my MP got low.

I regularly have instances where everyone is having fun talking. In fact it’s weird when instances don’t have that. Save for really short things like normal raids or trials. My icebreaker is usually asking people if they like spiders and that led into someone explaining their spider collecting hobby and talking about different kinds of spiders. It was neat.

I’m on Malboro, a PvE server. I afk in Limsa next to the market board (that’s Auction House in WoW-speak) and have yet to see anything in /say, /yell, or /shout being a slur, derogatory, or hurtful.

Except this one bastard that thought it was funny to play Caramelldansen on every instrument as a bard, but you can turn performance off, so…
