you know what iām gonna compile a whole imgur album of melili pics because you all deserve to see my potato
That was me. I initially rolled Shager as an Archanist and just was straight up not having a good time. Then I learned I could change jobs on the fly, picked up Marauder for something different and fell in love.
Even then, it took a bit for me to really warm to the game fully. Best part about it is the whole shebang is free up to level 60 so there really is no compelling reason to rush things or even feel the need to subscribe immediately.
I also want to interject with something for those who might be hesitant with FF14 and the story and RP:
I have never met a single RPer who was trying to RP as The Warrior of Light.
What do I mean by that? Exactly whatās written on the tin. Of course, Iām absolutely positive theyāre out there, and that they exist. But I think most people keep their āWarrior of Lightā story private and/or within a select group of friends, and that a majority of people keep to having the Echo at most, as generally people go with normal mercanary/merchant/civilian/adventurer.
Why? Because the game supports these types of characters! Thereās literal mercenary stuff in-game, youāre signing up with a mercenary guild essentially dedicated to a city state. Professions are literally just merchants! Civilians are a thing! Thereās civilian clothing and houses! Adventuring is straight up canonically a thing! Thereās adventurer guilds in every city-state.
My character has an Echo (youāll fine more about this later in the story), and has done some Seriously Dangerous Stuff, but he is not the Warrior of Light and never will be.
For all intents and purposes, the WoL (Warrior of Light) is this legendary figure who fights gods and my character would have maybe ended up helping him since he wouldnāt get ābamboozledā (trying to be vague about this for spoilers) for trying to help him.
Most people consider Meteor (the āofficialā name of the hyur whoās the poster child Warrior of Light you see on all the trailers and official art) the actual Warrior of Light.
Whether this is the same for everyone, thatās obviously up for debate. But that was my experience on the few years I spent on Crystal before moving to Aether. And Iāve still yet to experience that, even RPing on Aether.
Something Iād recommend for people trying to get into rp is to do what Iām doing. I have not actually done much rp if any, Iām just going through the game normally and coming up with my characterās backstory and stuff as I go through it and get a better feeling for the world.
Spoilers up until the end of Stormblood.
For instance, after learning about the large Garlean Wall on the border of Eorzea I realized the only way my character (A Hrothgar) could have gotten to Eorzea is by boat or sneaking past the Garleans. I decided to go with the land route, and I gave my character the scar option as giant cat man not very inconspicuous and got into a few fights on the way. Then on the complete flip side, in the main story I consider the scar something I got while fighting ZenosIāve met several, actually. Some even have co-WoLs. Iām even friends with a few!
Please, I beg of anyone that is getting into FFXIV: slog through the first 60 levels. It gets better, I promise. Everyone thatās played FFXIV, mains it, sings its praise to the rooftops have all agreed the game doesnāt get interesting or to the āgood bitsā where everything ties together in the story until 50, and then Heavensward is where they take their time because itās sooooo good. You get a break where you can ignore the story really in Stormblood because while itās not the worst thing ever, itās definitely predictable and not as impactful as Heavensward was. So when you get to Shadowbringersā¦ thatās when you go, āOhhhh now I get itā and youāre sucked into the story whether you are a FF franchise fan or not.
So my biggest advice is if you are just looking for a MMORPG without the RPG part, FFXIV will not be up your alley. But if you are someone that wants to care about the characters, that gets emotional when something happens to your favorite; this is the game for you because you are guaranteed to have at least one favorite live and one favorite die.
you know what lemme elaborate this further
a lot of people do RP as their WoL, but also have a dedicated non-WoL profile for like, other RP stuff with other people in more group settings and stuff
the game really sorta encourages you to go all out as the hero given its story focus but also take a step back and do regular stuff
in regards to being overwhelmed, well, compared to wow the game is very wide as opposed to tall - thereās a lot of little systems that theyāve put in over the years as side content and stuff that you can straight-up ignore until you feel like you wanna dedicate the time to it
so really just go ahead and enjoy the MSQ ride - when you wanna go back and do PotD or fiddle with chocobo racing itās always gonna be there
and thankfully same with stuff like eureka, thereās always little communities for stuff like that too
OR
hyperfocus on the fun lil stuff you like, you can straight-up be a mahjong grandma in the free trial because gold saucer only requires you to unlock airships
note the wide vs. tall structure also can be applied endgame gear progression - ffxiv usually has a grand total of like 2 choices for armor pieces at top-end ilvls and pretty much only two ways to get them (latest tomestones then upgraded, or a coffer drop from the latest raid tier) but outside of certain classes substats arenāt as impactful as the straight ilvl boost (exceptions are pretty big imo but still)
whereas wow has the whole normal/heroic/mythic or m+ or pvp system and all that (yāall know how it works iām not elaborating that one)
addendum: substats are kinda ehhhhhh impact-wise in ffxivās top end but the thing about them is they got the whole materia system for you to just slot in stuff and optimize
Since itās free up to 60, Iām definitely going to keep trying and will log in but as dumb as this may sound, the vibe that Iām feeling is incredibly superficial.
Itās all way too pretty and smooth. It feels āuber fantasyā in a way Iām just not feeling.

tbh i still feel that sometimes with the newer areas

Yeah see, I feel like a dope for even saying this is why Iām not feeling it butā¦I like what I like. The video games I stay interested in, arenāt typically this polished or ādreamyā.
Iāll keep trying but Iām definitely not going to force it.

Superficially, I totally get that.
But tonally? Gameās friggen DARK.
Oh no thereās cool RP stuff happening in places I canāt teleport to because Iām only level 20ā¦
ā¦guess Iāll have to actually play the game eventually
But tonally? Gameās friggen DARK.
Some of it can be quite subtle too.
Summary
Such as in Shadowbringers, when you first go to Eulmore, you find a singer girl who needs a surgery in order to stay in the city. Towards the end of 5.0 content when you go after Vauthry, there is a boss, the, āForgiven Obscenity,ā that uses attacks like, āOrison Fortissimo,ā and, āConviction Marcato.ā The attack names are the indicator that the singer you, āsaved,ā back at the start of the expansion was transformed into a Sin Eater because of your actions.
Am I going to have trouble if I try to go through the MSQ as a white mage?
Dunno if white mage damage is high enough or if itll be like leveling a priest in vanilla
You wonāt face any trouble, per say, just itāll be a bit of a grind. Not a grind because youāll need to actually grind anything, but because healers donāt have a fun offensive rotation for the longest time.
So youāll be unkillable, but itāll be a little tedious to take down your enemy.

I relatively recently (months back but close enough) did one of the later game, higher dps check type solo duties as a Scholar. I actually failed once or twice before getting it down, I had to be very on top of hitting thigs fast in order to burn through a dps phase successfully. Mind you, this is one of the harder, least forgiving breakpoints in the MSQ (I believe) and even if you struggle a number of times the game will eventually give you the option for easier difficulties.
The MSQ is designed to be done by every class, so far as I know, at no point should you necessarily get bricked walled. That said, for obvious reasons, dps tend to have an easier time on average. Or at least a quicker one.
even if you struggle a number of times
One failureās enough. I went AFK during a solo duty and when I came back I failed, but it gave me the option to go Very Easy or Easy or Normal the second time around.
Every class is a DPS class. Every single one. Your job is to DPS no matter what you play. The boss canāt kill you if itās dead.
FFXIV healing is very different than WoW. You donāt need to keep people topped off 100% at all times. Instead, itās more about memorizing the big damage bursts and then sending out a flood of heals really quickly before going back to DPSing. The only downside to WHM is that, as above, itās kind of tedious. It doesnāt have a full DPS rotation, so you just kind of spam Glare or Holy the whole time. But it is funny to see WHM burst hit the top of DPS charts on some fights when Blood Lily pops off.
none of the healers have real big DPS rotations really, all of them can be summed up as one spell each for:
- ST
- DoT
- AoE
and then each has a thing that provides utility while coincidentally doing damage
- WHM has Assize which is a big burst heal and damage instant while restoring MP
- SCH has Energy Drain which uses Aetherflow when you donāt need that resource for healing and restores MP
- AST has their entire card system which gives damage buffs that also coincidentally restore MP too
it USED to have a bit more meat to it in prior expansions but they streamlined it for ShB
