Cactpot Connoisseur
There is no company that grows to the size of these gaming giants that wouldn’t have some awful truth behind them that we may never find out about, or if/when we do find out about will make us feel pissed. That’s just a fact, even if it’s not a happy one.
However, I also don’t want people to confuse Square Enix, the company itself, with the FF14 Dev team. Whether or not the FF14 team has some skeletons in their closet, I wouldn’t know, but I feel like its pretty safe to say with folks like Yoshida and Ishikawa on board… I doubt there’s as much terrible things going on in the background as some might imagine. Unlike where it was sourced that WoW’s team was actively participating in the stuff, it’d be scary to see it happening on FF14’s team. But who knows?
Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But don’t wreck yourself over what-ifs.
The WrA FFXIV Thread: Don’t Fear the Reaper
i have taken both of your considerations and have tossed them in the recycling bin in favor of me remembering the live letter when foxclon (the xiv community manager dude who’s often next to yoshi-p) dressed as a beaver
I had this convo with a friend last night. My time there shocked the younger me. Women were servile as little as 20 years ago. I’m not sure if much has changed, but injustices are largely the same here as in the 90s.

Posting this now just in case the non-subbed get their privileges revoked and we disappear off the planet forever like General Zod into the Phantom Zone.

Gamers go
I think I hit the wall with XIV. Logged in last night did a series of MS quests that were just running back and forth talking to people and reading their dialog while occasionally fighting the random mobs that aggro’d on me along the way.
I like the story but the way it’s presented sometimes is so painfully dull.
No reason not to step away and come at it later with a fresher mind.
It’s not going anywhere, as far as I’m aware.
I still think the MSQ is the worst part of the game. And from what I’ve seen most roleplay events can be enjoyed without full knowledge of the game’s lore anyway!
Do you plan on roleplaying, Rakham? If so, I’d love to hear about your character’s personality and stuff!
Yeah. I might swap to some of my back log of Steam games for a while.
I do a fair bit of rp when I have the time. My two most played characters are my Miqo’te Ninja and my Elezen Machinist.
My Miqo’te is an intelligence operative with a mercenary company and my Elezen is mad doctor/inventor who may have formerly been in the service of Garlemald.
How far did you get with it? Because if ARR is a slow walk at times, Heavensward is an Olympic sprint.
From my own observations, people moving from WoW to FFXIV often struggle with the depth of the MSQ because story is where the two games differ perhaps the most drastically. WoW’s story is extremely poorly crafted, poorly thought out, poorly conveyed. So many elements are left in novels or other outside sources, whereas FFXIV puts everything story-relevant in the game itself, with outside materials only enhancing or clarifying things.
WoW’s idea of story is quest dialogue that can be instantly skipped and one or two action-packed cinematics. FFXIV’s idea of story is frequent cutscenes, frequent voice acting, character development, etc…
The 2.0 MSQ is slow and a bit dry, but it sets the foundation for amazing things as the game progresses.
People coming from WoW to FFXIV are trained by Blizzard to rush to the endgame or that killing 30 mobs and skipping quest text is more efficient. That’s not how FFXIV was designed, so it can be an abrasive experience.
FFXIV wasn’t designed for efficiency. It was designed for immersion. If someone ignores the world, the game won’t be worth it.
I play on the Balmung server or w/e it is called. Not sure if it is the popular RP server on FF 14 or not.
Playing 14 with a single player mindset to just enjoy the story was / is the best advice that I’ve gotten from this thread.
If you can survive the tediousness of Classic, then you can make it to Heavensword. Do take breaks though, there’s no rush to endgame.
Oh and also, I’m Ganon Daisch on Maetus, if anyone wants to add me to come check out the server / play / chat.
Yeah Classic questing is, hands down, far worse than anything ARR could throw at you.
The only difference is that ARR also shoves hours of cutscenes with the quests that can probably feel overwhelming.
I guess my issue is when the story bogs down in too much: Go to person A and read four paragraphs of dialog, now go to person B and read five paragraphs, now go back to A for three more paragraphs. Now get a cutscene. Now go to person C for more dialog. With no actual gameplay in between. I made it through ARR and HW into Storm, but it may be break time for a while.
So, been a bit of an odyssey getting to FF14
First, had to figure out you cant download it to external SSD for ease of movement to future machine.
Then, relative ease of figuring out in free trail my comp can handle the game just fine.
Third, a freaking Tornado came through my town and KO’d my internet for two days when I was getting ready to upgrade account.
I’m still early on in Stormblood.
Heavensward was a lot faster than ARR yeah, and to be honest even ARR wasn’t that bad, despite being the least enjoyable part of the game for me.
I guess I’m just burnt out on fighting world-ending gods and mysterious scheming folk who can turn into mist and fly away. After WoW I’m just kinda tired of those tropes.
What I’ve been enjoying most about this game are the more grounded stories that I can explore with most roleplayers and through the surprisingly well written Job quests!
