I played WCIII and jumped on WoW during Wrath. I had a pretty good understanding of the history and world, but to compensate for what I had missed out on I created a Forsaken who never left his home town and thus didn’t know the world outside of it.
For people who don’t know the world of FFXIV, instead of hitting up a wiki, is there some sort of primer to help us out?
To be fair, the best way is to just jump into the game. Otherwise, I’d suggest looking into their lorebook.
Glad I could help! Now all that being said, I have randomly wandered on roleplay out in the wild on some occasions! Here’s how you can spot them:
you can tell that someone is intending to roleplay if they have floating “RP” letters just to the left of their username. That would indicate that they are either currently in-character or looking for someone to roleplay with (or they just concluded some roleplay and forgot to toggle it off haha)
You can turn on this roleplaying bat-signal thing by typing “/roleplaying”!
As someone pointed out, there’s a lore book that exists for background information.
But a majority of lore you’ll get dripfed in in the game itself. Which, I know, is a mind boggling concept after playing WoW and having to buy 76 books and a movie to find out whether or not Jaina actually has 6 fingers on her right hand or if it was a canonical typo.
While you might start off a bit lost, I know I did, you will get a better understanding of things so long as you read the MSQ.
Finally starting a trail account for FF14 proper now.
Genuinely concerned RP will lack the bite that holds my interest since fighting a foe who gets yeeted every two years is only so compelling.
Slowly but surely getting used to the new aesthetic. It didn’t sit well with me at first for some reason, but my character is already freaking adorable.

It’s… honestly so weird to have such natural-looking idle animations compared to the ones in WoW.
One annoying thing about ff14 is that you can only friend people while they’re online 
I’m genuinely hoping that I’ll be able to enjoy RP in FF14, I really do.
We all need to somehow schedule to get online at the same time and friend each other!

Honestly, it’s very hit or miss for me in my experience, but I had zero trouble finding RP.
It really just depends on who you end up hitching your wagon with, if with anyone at all.
There’s plenty of adventure-esque RP out there. I’ve seen it, and FF14 has a world that makes perfect sense for the average adventurer to be out and about because the world has lots of nasty monsters and (not including) a war Eorzea has been fighting for a very long time (trying to be vague for the sake of not spoiling the story).
Whether its militaristic RP in the form of city state factions/the grand companies, merchant/city RP with the many actual crafting/gatherer jobs or owning your own inn/store, or simple adventurer-style RP… it all exists.
However, without a doubt, the most popular form of RP will probably be the merchant/city RP due to the overwhelming support it receives in the form of housing and crafter jobs. However, there are many FCs supporting all walks of RP. Hell, I don’t even play on Crystal anymore (the main RP hub) and there are still RP FCs that recruit on the Aether Data Center!
Currently I’m getting quite agitated right now because FF14 keeps crashing when I try to create and customize a character.
I spent 2 hours downloading this game onto my SSD and this is my thanks -.-
Have you tried cycling through the idle poses and facial expressions yet? They’re on the emote panel!
