I guess one thing I can say about a compromise between the existing Stonemaul and potential Gorian influence is that there really doesnât need to be any.
It seems like the Gorian element of ogres is slowly being retconned into ogres in general already, and Iâm perfectly fine with that.
I believe we were originally told that the existing ogres didnât get a model upgrade with Warlords of Draenor because the new model represented ogres before they were corrupted and became stupid, but the models are very clearly a strict quality upgrade. Thereâs no design differences between them at all. As far as I can tell, the real reason is because they didnât want all the old ogres to be wearing the new fancy armor and togas, but didnât want to bother making new versions of all the old ogre outfits, and I totally understand that.
Over time, weâve been seeing more and more ogres on Azeroth appear with the updated model with no indication that they came back with us from Draenor.
The culmination of this so far is Exileâs Reach. You have a full on Gorian settlement on Azeroth, with Gorian architecture, Draenor ogre models, Draenor ogre outfits, and a legitimately threatening, scheming sorcerer leading them. No one treats this as unusual at all and thereâs no sign they somehow arrived from the other timeline to set this up.
Iâm totally fine with this. As I said earlier, if anything, itâs an anti-retcon. Itâs using the new lore to bring all ogres back to where Warcraft III hinted they would be but never officially established.
Having the Stonemaul Clan suddenly just start building a permanent settlement and putting on their togas and centurion armor without any explanation as to why they didnât do this before would frankly be one of the least damaging questions the lore has ever had (and wouldnât really be that hard to explain anyway).
The easiest thing to do in that regard, an idea Iâve presented before, is to have the AU Stonemaul Clan join with the MU Stonemaul Clan, bringing their ideas and designs into the MU Stonemaul Clan society. The whereabouts of the AU Stonemaul Clan is a loose thread that really needs an explanation, and that seems like the best answer in my opinion.
The AU Stonemaul Clan came with the Magâhar Orcs in their unlock scenario. They then proceeded toâŚermâŚdisappear into fat air without a trace. They didnât even show up when the Magâhar used beasts from Draenor in some WQâs in BfA. They just disappeared with no word on where they went, and seeing as they stood with the Magâhar being inducted into the Horde (and were loyal to the Magâhar to begin with), I see little reason why they wouldnât still be part of the Horde.
If you just integrate them into the MU Stonemaul Clan, it would explain why the Stonemaul Ogres have more Gorian designs being used for armor, weapons, and so on. It would give a reason for potential heritage armors and toga transmogs, while also making buildings like a big Stonemaul arena!
I donât see why the AU Stonemaul Ogres wouldnât share their designs with the MU Stonemaul Ogres. You could still have big and dumb Ogres with clunky armor designs and concepts but also have Gorian stuff too. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
Iâve talked about the AU Stonemaul quite a bit before, but there is a lot that could be done with them. Hopefully, weâll see them, along with the MU Stonemaul Clan and the Dunemaul Clan, in the near future while still being part of the Horde, of course.
Dream big, Ogre fans!
So Iâve managed to finish my current class with a 99.24% (An A!), so Iâll have some free time to look over the main post of the megathread. Iâm going to see if any sections need revamping or editing, as well as think of any other new sections to add to it. I do want to think up racials, jokes, and flirts for Ogres also at some point.
If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share!
Iâll also be thinking of different posts to make as well. Screen shot posts (story and for fun related), comparisons to Ogres from other MMOâs and media, and other stuff I think of to post about related to Horde Ogre interests are a few examples I have in mind. I also appreciate the ongoing discussions, as theyâve been fun to engage in!
I also have just my Kyrian character left to get to renown 40 in case each covenant gets their own story campaigns when they add in more renown levels next patch. We havenât seen much in the way of Ogres in the Shadowlands, and of the four I feel like Maldraxxus would be the most likely place to see some, but Iâll keep an eye out to see if there are other Ogre sightings in the near future.
Dream big, Ogre fans!
If you want to think up some of your own without outside influence, go ahead, but if you want inspiration, the Ogriâla site you linked earlier has some, but I really love these:
https://twitter.com/itsmeBruel/status/1354272838589399040
Speaking of Maldraxxus, every time I pass one of those Maldraxxus Gladiators it makes me want to play an ogre all over again. I think I would go Maldraxxus if I had an ogre.
While I do think of some ideas of my own, I do like to see and share what others have created, as well as looking for what is in the game and other forms of WoW media for Ogres in general. I think sharing ideas of any sort is important to inspire some playable Ogre ideas.
Speaking of what others have created, I really like what that Twitter user created for that image in the link above! The racials sound really interesting and fun. Picking up and tossing people sounds like fun, especially in a potential PvP settings where you could, in theory, toss people off cliffs and stuff. The racials really feel Ogre-like and fitting as well, which is the type of stuff I really like to see with playable races in general.
ItsmeBruel did a really awesome job. Thank you for sharing this! It gives me even more hope to see playable Horde Ogres someday, and Iâm happy to see there are other Ogre fans who put in a lot of work to show support for them!
And if I ever get to make my Ogre Warrior, he would definitely go Necrolords. Bashing things and eating lots of food would be a really fun time for him!
Dream big, Ogre fans!
I donât think Iâm bold enough when I come up with ideas. The ogre knocking things back as they run through them is a great idea I would have thought was too much, but there is precedent in the Steed of Glory PvP talent (incidentally, some PvP talents feel to me like the sort of thing youâd expect in PvE and not PvP because theyâre more âfun and thematicâ than âbalancedâ, but either way itâs a precedent).
The picking up and throwing racial might be a little harder to pull off, especially if you let it target friendly players (although Leap of Faith is close to a precedent for that), but Iâd love to see it get in there in some form. It just feels right for an ogre (and has Blizzard precedent in a Garrosh ability in Heroes of the Storm, and theyâve been known to take inspiration across games before).
Different racials for one or two-headed ogres is certainly evocative. There was a time in which Blizzard said that the interesting things to tackle for playable ogres would be two-headed ogres and female ogres.
For the former, I think they might have a solution now. Iâm no expert on the back end, but I feel like the new customization system, and new UI, would make it relatively simple to add that as an option. It could replace that part of the body similar to the Mechagnomes, and have a UI to change between the options somewhat like the Worgen forms.
For the latter, Iâm not really that concerned. After so long we finally got official female ogre artwork, but Iâm curious as to what others think of them. I certainly think they should make female ogres, but the ogres we have are what is iconic. I think pretty much anything can be done with the female ogres and it would be a bonus. Even if they donât end up to be a popular choice, I think thatâs fine. Many races are more popular one way or another, and it just seems like itâs the way things fall, no need to overly fret about it and hold back the entire race for it.
I consider myself fairly decent when it comes to world-building or fun ideas that fit a raceâs theme. Iâm abysmal when it comes to making ideas like racials work and be balanced in things like PvP, however. That said, I do like the idea of Ogre players picking up people in PvP, only to throw or punt them away. Something about that is really amusing to me.
As for female Ogres, while I donât really plan to play one and I doubt theyâd be hugely popular, they should still add them in for those who would like to play them. One of the big reasons for that is marketing, as if Ogres were announced playable, one of the big questions people will be looking up (in other words advertisement for the expansion Ogres come out), is âwhat do female Ogres look like?â
Iâve talked about it before, but another thing is that female Ogres would do is to add some flavor and world-building in a sense to the character creation screen.
One example is that female Ogres would be there for players, men and women, whoâd want to have a female character that is not a barbie doll, but is instead a big and tough female character. More options in character creation is a good thing to open the door for different niches or what people like in fantasy settings. A lot of people didnât make female Trolls or Ogres in Everquest 1, but the option to if you wanted to was still good to see available.
The other example is just a feeling of an expanded world in a sense. An example I used before is the female dwarves having a beard option in Everquest 1. Yes, a lot of people arenât going to make bearded female dwarves, but options like that are something that become memorable and just adds to the world and gives some personality and flavor to those races.
And yes, people will make fun of female Ogres regardless of how they would be designed in WoW, but I do think it would be a positive experience. Especially if theyâre as gruff and tough as male Ogres. Besides, playable Horde Ogres would be big news, and for those thatâd want to make a female Ogre, either as a serious or as a funny character, the option to do so just adds to the game, in my opinion.
Sometimes, you have to see the game as a world and think of all the types of players in the grand scheme of things. Then again, Iâm the type to be really big into world-building and such.
Dream big, Ogre fans!
Iâm not sure if Iâm misreading you or I wasnât clear. I definitely think we should get female ogres. Itâs just that itâs been a topic that many have struggled with: how to do them ârightâ, but Iâm starting to think that itâs the wrong way to look at it. The male ogres, being the only ones to exist right now, are the ones that have given the ogres their reputation. No matter what the female ogres are like, they wonât take away from that, so the female ogres are free to be anything. They donât need to be some nebulous âperfectâ, they just need to be.
I also donât mean to imply that no effort should go into it, just that we shouldnât overthink it.
I agree that itâs great to have something for all players. For a long time, there was an expectation (more of a joke, probably based on the gameâs reputation for dimorphism) that female ogres might look like stereotypically hot human women, just large. Others have tried to consider a look thatâs closer to the male ogres, but maybe have some unique toughness to it. When we finally got artwork of a female ogre? She mostly just looks like a male ogre with long hair and a bra. Maybe itâs a bit unexciting, but it only matters so much (also, while new customization for existing races might be on hold, new races would probably get some crazy options and that would help to offset the basic form seeming boring). They will be what they will be, and if they find a wide audience without having to go out of their way for it, great!
Female ogres will definitely help the worldbuilding a lot, too. I was imagining a theoretical situation, earlier, with the Ogre Continent as a major piece of content, at least an Argus, if not the main continent of the expansion. I remembered something I read from someone who appreciated Exileâs Reach for having a bit of a lower fantasy feel to it, with stakes that werenât super high, and an ogre necromancer being treated as a serious threat instead of just another goofy character to mow down on the way to some universe conqueror. It made me consider that, with the right story, the general audience might be able to appreciate the Ogre Continent as such a major piece of content.
Even with the overhaul given to ogre lore in Warlords of Draenor, though, I donât think itâs enough. As much as I like Highmaul and the Gorian design, itâs still fairly limited. You have a few varieties of outfits, a couple of allies in things like the Ogron, and a lot of very similar buildings. Theyâre missing the true variety needed for an entire continent. Female ogres would help that a lot just on their own.
I donât think the Ogre Continent needs to be major content like that, but it just led me into some fun what-ifs about ways to further expand ogre culture.
Sorry for being confusing. Iâll try to be better at that.
Thinking on female Ogres, I do wonder if Ogrezonia would play any part, whether it is just a mention or if we actually went there. If not that, they could just suddenly appear and be a thing as has happened with other previously NPC races that did become playable. Female Ogres do exist in some of the tribes, such as Tharg of the Stonemaul Clan having a wife that was slain, so itâs possible weâd just see them show up in places afterwards.
If we ever did see female Ogres in-game, even as NPCâs, it would be a cause to get excited (stop laughing you perverts, you know what I mean!). We could see what was done with them design-wise and if anything was mentioned of Ogrezonia or where they come from.
On the subject of the Ogre continent in WoD, Iâd be curious to know what it wouldâve been like. Allied races werenât a thing during WoD, so I donât know what the chances are that weâd run into a group of friendly Ogres, aside from one or two like with the one we could recruit for the mission table there.
Most of them seem to ally themselves with the Iron Horde, and the Frostwolves were not particularly on good terms with them in general. If we ever went back to Draenor, maybe it would be where Ogres and other denizens are holding out to fight against Yrel and her forces there. Maybe we could pick up some more Ogres whoâd join the Horde and join up with the MU Stonemaul Clan like how I assume the AU Stonemaul Clan did.
Ogres being seen as a threat is great. Especially if it was from the Allianceâs perspective. Imagine if Ogres were with the Horde in BfA, and they came charging as an army against Alliance outposts. It would be a terrifying sight and a potential for mass destruction. Them being goofy can work on occasions for things like specific quests or NPCâs, but otherwise they should be treated as a huge threat by the enemy. Lots of potential for this!
Also wanted to mention that I really am enjoying these discussions. Iâm very happy to find others to talk to about Ogre stuff, share ideas, and such!
Dream big, Ogre fans!
I really appreciate it, too.
I guess itâs like turning something you love into a job, but now you realize you donât enjoy it anymore. Iâve spent so much time hoping for ogres to be playable, and being perpetually disappointed, that itâs been forever since I just talked about ogres. Itâs fun.
Loooooove it!!!
Itâs high time the Horde gets playable Ogres! They need more savage races.
Fully support this.
i would like to see ogres be a playable race ever since i heard rumors long ago.
also if they get heritage armor, what would it look like? maybe that pot armor seen on classic models or something greek/roman themed like the ones on draenor.
If I were to guess, Iâd lean towards the Roman themed armor from the Gorian Empire. Granted, I would also like to have the armor that was cobbled together as a transmog option. Something about it gives Ogres some fun character to me.
Yeah, Iâve grumbled about the treatment of Horde Ogres for so long that I have a hard time trying to keep it fresh without repeating myself. Usually I try to at least bring come comedy with my constant grumblings.
Itâs frustrating to be an Ogre fan, given how forgotten the Horde Ogres seem to be, but Iâm still marching onward best as I can for them and Saurok as playable Horde races. If I didnât have hope of any sort, I wouldnât be operating megathreads for them both, which I still enjoy managing and posting in.
So long as Iâm playing the game, Iâll keep going as best as I can.
Dream big, Ogre fans!
Itâs really strange because itâs not like ogres are forgotten by any means. I donât remember if it was in this thread or another one, but I was going to list out the expansions that playable ogres would have fit really well in as they are. Itâs essentially every other expansion!
Burning Crusade visits their homeworld. Cataclysm heavily featured them because of Choâgall and the Twilightâs Hammer. Warlords of Draenor revisited their homeworld again and overhauled their lore. The whole war effort of Battle for Azeroth would have been a great excuse to promote the existing Horde members to being playable (like the Dark Iron). You could make a good argument for other places too, like Mists of Pandaria also being a bit of a war effort situation (and a fake leak promising Alliance Pandaren and Horde Ogres was a very popular leak at the time).
When it comes to ogres being represented on the Horde, though, theyâre weirdly absent. Thatâs despite them once being a core Horde race, still technically having Horde members, and maybe even most importantly just fitting the Horde really well thematically.
The most you get is the Stonemaul at launch and Cataclysm remembering them for another hub and dealing with some other ogres. Aside from that, thereâs only the occasional cameo like OrâDac in Mists of Pandaria or Gregg wanting to join in Legion.
Even if they arenât playable, I want to see ogres on the front lines, smashing down barricades for the rest of the Horde armies!
In fact, something that actually makes me feel a little weird about if we did get playable ogres at this point, is that the ogres have still been mostly absent from the Hordeâs story for over sixteen years! Itâs a gap thatâs always just going to feel weird.
When you think about it that way, it makes me really curious. Theyâre clearly not averse to using ogres fairly regularly (Exileâs Reach makes some fun use of them in this very expansion), but there seems to be an aversion to using them in association with the Horde. I wonder if thereâs actually some reason for that or if itâs just coincidence. I could offer lore reasons, but wonder if there are development reasons.
It is very weird that the Stonemaul Ogres, who did play a pretty important part in Warcraft 3 in terms of Jaina and Thrallâs backstories, would just get completely forgotten and not utilized by the Horde in any fashion past Pandaria.
As I mentioned before, I have no reason to see why Thrall wouldnât have offered the Stonemaul Clan full membership to the Horde afterwards. He seemed to offer it to several races at the time, the Stonemaul Ogres stayed loyal to the Horde, and they were nearby so they would be very useful allies to have. I canât see a situation where he didnât offer them full membership, especially seeing the Stonemaul being really happy being part of the Horde. They shout âFor da Horde!â in Feralas when attacking Choâgall, so they do like the Horde a lot to want to utilize battle shouts like that.
Iâd be curious what the storyline wouldâve been for playable Horde Ogres had we gotten them in Cataclysm. I assume it wouldâve been the Stonemaul Clan, maybe having their home destroyed and needing to reclaim it as their starting scenario. I couldnât imagine it being some other, random Ogre clan out of nowhere. I do wonder if the Horde Ogre quests and such in Cataclysm were leftover from ideas of making them playable.
Regarding the Horde Ogre clansâ absences, a lot of that could be easily explained. I feel like trying to take over Dire Maul for the Horde is one of the key possibilities that could tie into what the MU Stonemaul, AU Stonemaul, and Dunemaul have been up to. Getting it to a point where the Horde can take it over permanently, seeing as the Night Elves are a bit busy with their home having become a bonfire, could lead to the Horde wanting to utilize them elsewhere. This could lead to Ogre adventurers and champions of the Horde.
I will say that if Blizzard had two-headed Ogre customization options, it would take quite a bit to make it work for both male and female Ogres. I donât expect it to function with two separate players for each head, but to get all helm graphics to work on both heads and likely having each head the capability to have different helms on would sound like a big undertaking. Still, if Blizzard did get it working, it would be huge news. Likely something exciting that people would want to check out themselves. It wouldnât surprise me if this could be a reason for holding back playable Ogres. I made a post on all the loose threads of the Horde Ogre clans that could be worked with to explain their absence, which would make for some really fun pre-expansion events like Cataclysm had.
That said, I donât think playable Horde Ogres are an impossibility. They were considered for Cataclysm, allegedly considered for Vanilla and WoD, and likely were considered for BfA if the âwe considered all races with two legs for allied race statusâ statement is true. If they were considered so many times, then Blizzard could still have an interest in making them playable. As such, I would hope they would still be in the cards as a future playable race, and I think they would be very welcomed, though Ogre player count likely wouldnât reach elf levels (then again, very few races would). Sure, people will complain about âstupid smelly Ogresâ being chosen to become playable, but people will complain about any race becoming playable.
I will say that every time an expansion is announced and I watch the reveal trailer, I always hope that playable Horde Ogres will finally be a thing. Itâs something that I think Iâll continue to do until we actually do get playable Horde Ogres. At any rate, I have no reason to fall into despair, as frustrated as I am that the Horde Ogres have been forgotten. As far as Iâm concerned, the Horde isnât complete until the Ogres get recognition as full members and they appear on the Horde side of that character creation screen.
Dream big, Ogre fans!
I posted this in my Saurok megathread before, but I wanted to also post this here: Iâve typed up a step by step guide on how to submit in-game feedback to support races you want to see playable while referring to their megathreads on here:
Once a month on only one character, I send an in-game suggestion for the races I want playable. I do one suggestion for each race and refer to their megathreads on the official US WoW forums for more information. Itâs something I donât regularly do, as I donât want to spam the system, but it is something I try to at least do occasionally.
If youâre interested in submitting in-game feedback for any races you are interested in becoming playable, here is how to get to it in game:
Step 1: Press ESC to bring up the general menu.
Step 2: Click âSupport.â Itâs at the very top of the menu.
A new window in-game should load. It can take a few seconds for it to load completely. Underneath the âSearch World of Warcraft Supportâ search bar, you should see a line of square images that refer to specific categories of support.
Step 3: Click the âSubmit feedback or bug reportâ square. It should be on the far left when you first load the support window.
Itâll take a second to load that part.
Step 4: Click the lightbulb icon on the right that says âSubmit a suggestionâ
Step 5: Click in the text box on this window to begin typing a suggestion.
Youâre now ready to submit an in-game suggestion!
Itâs limited to 500 characters you can type, so you have to be a bit creative in the limited space. As I said before, I usually do one suggestion for each race I want playable, giving a very brief mention of the race, the faction I want it for, and why I feel theyâd be great to add. I then make sure to type the name of the associated megathread, assuming they have a megathread, and mention theyâre on the official US WoW forums, stating to go there for more info, such as ideas, fan support/designs, ongoing discussions, etc.
When you submit the feedback, it states you wonât get a response, but that itâll be looked at in some way. Now, this wouldnât be a sure-fire way to get a race playable, but it canât hurt to do so in my opinion. After all, we have to show support somehow!
So for those interested in supporting a race you want playable, this is how to do it in-game. As I said, I usually do this once a month (on just one character) at most so as to not spam the system. However, multiple people doing it could help a lot to showing support for races weâd love to see playable.
Also make sure youâre submitting a suggestion and not a bug. I mean, yes, the character creation screen lacking playable Horde Ogres is quite the game-breaking bug (with an easy fix!), but a suggestion will likely be received better as opposed to sending that as a bug report.
Iâll continue to look into different avenues to show support for playable Horde Ogres and Saurok. Iâm open to suggestions if anyone has any!
Dream big, Ogre fans!
Posting to add that Iâm going to do this as well. Every ogre deserves their day. (as do mogu, jinyu, and furbolgs)
Ogres Ogres Ogres! Oi Oi Oi!
I hope we DO get Ogres one day. And Naga. And many others. But âŚitâs hard not to worry about the future of WoW, given all the baffling decisions Blizz has made game-wise lately.
This is a great thread, thank you OP for the work you did on it. Ogres are long overdue!
