The Unofficial Saurok Playable Race Discussion Megathread! šŸŠ

Over 9000 elves and still I want more.

You bet Iā€™ll ask for more lizardfolk too. The more the merrier. Always.

One of the Saurok characters I want to make is a male Demonology Warlock. Another is a male Unholy Death Knight. If I have any more spare character slots, Iā€™d likely make at least one more, though I donā€™t know what class Iā€™d make them. I guess it depends on when we would get playable Horde Saurok, if they ever become a reality.

Do you have any thoughts on female Saurok and how they should look with customization options and such? I think itā€™s very possible to make female Saurok look different in many ways that doesnā€™t involve putting breasts on them. There are scale colors and patterns that you see more with female reptiles IRL, along with some other features. Iksar in Everquest 1 and especially 2 is a good example of how different they can look from their male counterpart.

Dracthyr dragonkin forms are suppose to be gender neutral, from my understanding, though I think some of that is because of how dragons look in general in WoW, as well as having to work with three character models with the humanoid form of both male and female Dracthyr. I would say that male and female Saurok and Sethrak would have different models with differences between males and females since they would be based on various IRL lizards and snakes.

Hopefully, female Saurok and Sethrak would be treated with care to make them awesome with some great customization options! :meat_on_bone::crocodile:

Iā€™ve never thought about it like thought about it, I would think theyā€™d be somewhat like Worgen perhaps with the same types of customizations or at least I would hope so because I really like my Worgen Warlock especially since she got the newer customizations with glowy eyes and stuff.

still want playable murloc :stuck_out_tongue:

Nothing wrong with that. Playable Murlocs would be an interesting idea and Iā€™d be curious how theyā€™d be implemented.

As for female Saurok being like Worgen, Iā€™ve imagined the female Worgen skeleton being a possibility to use for female Saruok. A lot of animations of both male and female Worgen would work well for male and female Saurok, and I imagine new animations that fit Saurok would be possible to implement on the Worgen skeletons. Several NPC races that utilize the Worgen skeleton also have tails, so Iā€™m sure tail mechanics/animations could be implemented for Saurok. It also could work with giving actual Worgen tails, which is a very popular request.

Iā€™d be fine with the Worgen skeletons being used to make playable Saurok. It seems like a possibility for reusing assets and cutting costs, which would be reasonable in this case since it could be very fitting if designed right.

There are a few reptile-related holidays in the year I wanted to list, some of which would work for potential in-game Saurok & Sethrak related events if I happen to get the time to plan such things. I canā€™t promise Iā€™ll be able to do any in-game events anytime soon, but was something I wanted to throw out there to see if anyone would be interested.

The days are the following:

May 29th- National Alligator Day

July 16th- World Snake Day

August 14th- World Lizard Day

October 21st- National Reptile Awareness Day

October 23rd- National Crocodile Day

Of these days, the days I could see doing Saurok-related events would be World Lizard Day and National Reptile Awareness Day, the latter of which could be done with Sethrak fans together and would fit well with a general Sauroktober celebration that month. Seems like October has a lot of neat holidays and celebrations in general.

Iā€™m not really sure on the specifics of doing an event related to those two days and what they would consist of, though I lean a bit more towards doing something for National Reptile Awareness Day more. I imagine it would be something people could come with Saurok and Sethrak illusions on (Tortollans also if that is a possibility), have reptile pets (Hunter pets and the mini pets anyone can summon), and eventually have people come as Dracthyr when theyā€™re available to make in-game. If Sethrak and Saurok ever became playable, then coming as those races would also be great.

I suppose it would be something that could be done with both Horde and Alliance areas in two separate events, even if we generally support Saurok as a Horde race. While promoting Saurok and Sethrak as playable races we want to see, it would also be something to celebrate reptiles in general and bring awareness to IRL reptiles and their importance in the world (of Real Life!).

As I said, I havenā€™t thought about the specifics at all, but if anyone has any ideas, please share! If I have a general idea of what to do for something like National Reptile Awareness Day, I can see if Sethrak fans in the Sethrak megathread would also be interested in forming an event of some kind in-game, though I do want to have a few specific ideas before suggesting it there.

And speaking of Sauroktober, I also want to think about what to do to celebrate it during the month of October. A lot really depends on my free time if I can do anything other than the usual posts here. I can always use some ideas for that.

Anyway, if anyone is interested and has ideas, please let me know. Canā€™t promise Iā€™ll do any in-game events this year, but it does help to plan something out since weā€™ll likely have a few years of Dragonflight before we know what the expansion afterwards consists of.

So itā€™s likely Iā€™ll need to post this again at some point, but I wanted to go over some plans of mine in covering Dracthyr here.

As I said before, Iā€™m excited for them in general. I still donā€™t see them killing the chances of ever seeing reptilian races becoming playable in general, and of course will continue onward with my playable Horde Saurok support.

-First, Iā€™ll be sharing any details and videos that come out about them when NDAā€™s get lifted.

One of the things I do with this megathread is look at other lizardmen races in different games and media for Saurok idea inspiration, and Dragon based races I also consider even if there are some big differences. So as we eventually get towards the beta and Dragonflightā€™s release, weā€™ll have videos and such to show off Dracthyr, which I will be sharing as I find them when Blizzard allows stuff to be shown off about them. We can also see their animations also to see how they are and if any of them could be applied to Saurok.

-Second is Iā€™ll be looking at creation of Dracthyr videos when allowed and available to share.

Mostly this will be a look at the dragonkin form for them to see what sort of customization options they have and scale patterns and colors. This is of interest to both Sethrak and Saurok, since some things could be applied to them.

-Third and final, when Dracthyr are available to be made on live Retail servers, Iā€™ll be sharing my two Dracthyr characters and will hope to see others share theirs as well.

This is again meant to show them off and look at little details of them. If I can remember, I might take a few screenshots right at the beginning as I make my characters and likely take a few for fun in Orgrimmar, since Iā€™m leaning towards both my Dracthyr characters going Horde currently.

Itā€™ll be an exciting time and Iā€™ll happily welcome anyone wanting to share their Dracthyr characters here. As I said, I donā€™t see them as a threat to either Saurok or Sethrak becoming playable, and a lot can be gained by seeing the Dracthyr in action and the customizations people make for them.

Itā€™ll be awhile before we see any more development on them for a beta, let alone when theyā€™ll be available whenever the expansion launches. I assume theyā€™ll be in a prepatch so we can make them and get them situated, along with the new talent system for our characters in general, before the Dragon Isles are available to go to. As we come across news and videos when NDAā€™s are lifted, Iā€™ll be sure to happily report on them here.

Itā€™s an exciting time to see a reptilian-like race playable in general for WoW. Let us hope it wonā€™t be the only one we see ever come out.

So tired of those sorts of arguments.

Hmmā€¦ Their tail animations, at first glance, could be a nice starting point for Blizzard making a Saurok tail properly animated.

Do you have any preliminary stories or concepts for your two Dracthyr?

Iā€™m gonna start with one myself until I can see how they play out a bit moreā€¦ I feel like Iā€™m going in blind.

No one should see them as a ā€œThreatā€ as theyā€™re not Saurok or Sethrak (Or Tortollan for that crowd, nor Naga.) so they canā€™t be a threat. If its not the same thing its not the thing those folk are requesting.

I think Blizz already confirmed the Dracthyr are going to be in Pre-patch as long as you have purchased DF.

As am I. Itā€™s a really silly argument, and Iā€™m sure both here and the Sethrak megathread will continue to get them off and on unfortunately. Itā€™s even more silly given the limitations of Dracthyr with class selection (just the one class), limited transmog on the actual dragonkin form, and not being able to ride mounts on their dragonkin form.

I do wonder if the similar arguments happened back in Vanilla for people wanting Silvermoon Elves, which later became Blood Elves, or for those wanting Nightborne during Legion. Completely different cultures and personalities that make them very unique compared to each other, even if Blood Elves and/or Nightborne ended up on Alliance with Night Elves. Theyā€™d still be different enough to stand out.

I canā€™t even remember seeing people make this argument with Dark Iron Dwarves, though mostly they were asked as a sub-race skin from what I remember. Just goes to show how different races can be even if theyā€™re similar in some fashion.

I just hope Blizzard has an open mind for more playable reptilian races. Iā€™d hate to have them consider Dracthyr as a definitive reptilian race and never consider others to become playable ever. I wouldnā€™t think thatā€™d be the case, but it is a small worry of mine.

Tails would be a good thing to keep an eye on. I donā€™t know if an existing skeleton/rigging would be used for playable Saurok, but it shouldnā€™t be too much of an issue regardless of what gets used.

Itā€™s a shame that Dracthyr canā€™t ride mounts in their dragonkin form, from my understanding. We could see how tails would be handled otherwise. It still shouldnā€™t be an issue, since Vulpera ride mounts just fine with tails.

Come to think of itā€¦Iā€™m wondering if the dragonkin form will be used for the forum mugshots of posts or if theyā€™d use the humanoid form. Something to look for to report on when they actually come out.

Not particularly at the moment. For backstory, although we know generally the back story of the Dracthyr, Iā€™d need to see it elaborated, expanded, and shown off in-game to get a better idea for my Dracthyr characters.

In terms of customization, I have a few ideas for both forms for both my Dracthyr characters, but itā€™s something I need to see in the character creation screen and play around with myself before I can figure it out myself. Currently considering my male Dracthyr to be the blue-green scale pattern while my female Dracthyr character may go with the green one, but Iā€™ll have to look at options when available.

I usually make a character for each spec for each class, as I like having separate characters for them. Thus why Iā€™m planning out two Dracthyr characters. Under normal circumstances, Iā€™d make a Horde and Alliance of a new class, but for Dracthyr, Horde is calling to me strongly in this circumstance. Hard to explain. If we ever get more character slots per account and Dracthyr can become more classes, Iā€™ll consider making an Alliance one sometime.

At present, Iā€™m assuming both my Dracthyr characters are just on a beach, chilling and waiting to be able to jump into action in-game. Itā€™s usually how I imagine characters I plan to make when I plan them for new races coming out.

Awhile ago, Wowhead made a couple of articles going over both specs of the Evoker class, which is the only class Dracthyr can be currently. It consists mostly of things we know, just with a little bit more elaboration and some screenshots to go with them.

DPS spec:

Healer spec:

It really seems rather limiting to see a new race that can be only one new class. It makes them rather one note and not quite as interesting. It seems like a lot of resources being used for something that seems rather niche, which is something that I feel doesnā€™t help when it comes to a game with multiple races and classes. Itā€™d be like if Pandaren could only be Monks, which would really be detrimental to the race as a whole in my opinion.

I do hope races only ever being one class ever is a one time thing and isnā€™t something weā€™d ever see again. Something like Sanā€™layn, as an example, have a lot of potential with their class selection, so to force them to become a Blood Mage class of some sort just seems like a detrimental trend. Iā€™m hoping that any new races that become playable will be able to have a variety of classes as opposed to just tying them to only one class. Sanā€™layn included, of course.

It has been stated that Dracthyr may get more classes in the future at some point. Not a confirmation that itā€™ll happen, but it is a possibility. On the bright side, it does help some in supporting playable Saurok and Sethrak, both of which would be able to be multiple classes. I do think more classes would help make Dracthyr feel a lot better.

With a selection of multiple classes, it adds a lot to a playable race. Often times, you can see their culture through what classes they can be and some of them operate differently than races of the same class. Some even have their own spin on classes, like Zandalari Paladins. Luckily, Saurok would be able to have quite a number of classes available for them should they become playable, and Iā€™m sure they would have some interesting spins on some of them.

Came across a really awesome art piece on DeviantArt of a Lizardfolk scouting in the swamp. It was created by Koru-Xypress and uploaded to the web site on August 1st, 2019.

ā€œCommission: Raewyrā€ by Koru-Xypress on DeviantArt

The swamp around really adds to the picture, in my opinion. It makes me imagine a Saurok scout who suddenly hears something and listens while flicking their tongue in the air to see if they smell anything nearby. I can imagine the Saurok also carrying something like a spear for hunting as well.

Iā€™ll continue to look for things to help inspire playable Saurok idea inspiration!

Hmmā€¦ Imagine Saurok reinforcing the Swamp of Sorrows for the Hordeā€¦

Thatā€™s a useful thing about having Saurok units in places like swamps. Theyā€™d fit naturally to their surroundings, mosquitoes wouldnā€™t really bother them because of scales, and they could even help by munching on those mosquitoes that keep pestering everyone. Not to mention being able to swim and navigate through muddy waters would be very useful for scouting or ambushing.

As long as you kept them well fed, Iā€™m sure theyā€™d be very reliable allies in such places!

I came across what I think is official model artwork of Saurok Blizzard made, which seems to have what appears to be concept artwork for Saurok in the top right corner:

I came across the image in a Google search. It was tied to an art contest Blizzard had at one point and time on the official WoW web page. However, the link itself might have updated to another art contest past the time this image came from and didnā€™t appear to have this image at all. In fact, none of the links to sections involving this art contest really did anything, so I couldnā€™t really navigate the web page to find any context to this image being on there. Seems like Google tends to be a bit goofy at times.

As for that concept art, it looks like something that wouldā€™ve come from the pre-alpha stage. Saurok sure looked a lot weirder then, looking like some weird Naga/Jinyu/Trogg hybrid abomination of some kind. It is interesting to see how Saurok ended up being.

I can only imagine how neat Saurok would look if they were ever designed to become a playable race. Maybe weā€™ll be lucky to see how that will look someday! :lizard:

I donā€™t believe Iā€™ve shared these before, but I found a couple of official images of some Lizardfolk from a mobile game called ā€œEmpires & Puzzles.ā€ Itā€™s some kind of match-3 gem mobile game with various heroes, which include several Lizardfolk heroes.

The first Iā€™ve come across is this Lizardfolk Fighter:

And the second is a Lizardfolk High Priest:

Both of which I wanted to share since the armor designs look really neat. It kinda looks like if Saurok took some design inspiration from Tauren in a way. Still very fitting for a Lizardfolk race that can help for inspiring some playable Saurok ideas!

Wowhead posted an article mentioning that the latest 9.2.5 build on the PTR is now a release candidate. The significance of that is that it shouldnā€™t be too much longer before we know what all is in 9.2.5, as well as its actual release date.

Article here:

I know there are suppose to be several events in-game to go over how some things are going since weā€™ve been in the Shadowlands. So far, the datamining has been focused mostly on stuff going on in Tirisfal Glades, so itā€™s unclear where else weā€™ll see events occur.

For Saurok, Iā€™m not really expecting much of anything unless we actually go to Pandaria briefly for some reason. Not impossible to see anything Saurok related, but weā€™ll see. Rumors of early access to new playable races as a Dragonflight pre-order bonus are only intensifying as we go on.

If we are getting any new races of some kind, Iā€™m hoping theyā€™ll be ones people have requested for awhile now. Itā€™s up in the air what is actually coming, but there are a lot of suspicious things going on with all the encryption and such. Iā€™ll keep expectations tempered of course, but regardless of what happens, Iā€™ll still keep supporting playable Horde Saurok as best as I can. :lizard:

9.2.5 was just announced to come out May 31st:

Wowhead has a couple of other related links with more info:

Going through the info currently as I post these in my megathreads. No new race announcements, though the rumors mentioned they were tied to Dragonflight preorders, so weā€™ll have to wait to see when they are available before we can see if the rumors are true or not.

Will keep an eye out for anything Saurok related to report, though Iā€™m not personally expecting anything. Weā€™ll see what happens when it happens, I guess.

A post on the Community Council was made to bring up the different race request megathreads on the forums, including this one. You can see the post here:

A list of race request megathreads was given to them in the Furbolg megathread, so more megathread threads should be getting added to the list.

You can also give the post a like even if youā€™re not part of the Community Council.

Iā€™d like to ask this post be spread around to others so we can all support it as best as we can. No guarantees weā€™ll see all our dreams come true, but having something on there helps increases our chances, in my opinion!

Since this megathread has officially gotten onto the Community Council thanks to that post, I think itā€™s time I look over the main post and do some revamping of some sections. Itā€™s something Iā€™ve been meaning to do, but given the time involved with it, I havenā€™t really had the time or energy to sit down and make a big edit of that kind. Maybe Iā€™ll do it in sections. Iā€™ll see if I can start that very soon.

As usual, if anyone has any suggestions of what should be revamped or added, please let me know. Iā€™m also looking to word the sections that make it more of an interesting read, but still informative. Something similar to what I did with my Stonemaul Ogre megathread.

I also see that the post on the Community Council has added a list of several other race request megathreads. It makes me happy to see a lot of the work and passion people have made get shown on there. As I said before, I hope if Blizzard looks at it, they do so with interest and an open mind. And while not a guarantee weā€™ll see all those races playable, hopefully weā€™ll see some dreams come true in the future.

It makes all the work done to support Ogres and Saurok for the Horde very worthwhileā€¦speaking of, this megathreadā€™s three year anniversary is coming up soon on June 2nd. Iā€™ll have to think of some fun posts to do for that. Iā€™m also open to suggestions for that or if anyone else wants to make their own post to celebrate the occasion! :lizard:
