Anduin has been around since Vanilla WoW, and have had many different models over the years. Starting with MoP he started to progress as a character and for all the expansions that followed (except WoD) he has been in evidence and participating, if not in the center of the story, having meaningful arcs.

Anduin is one of the last Original WoW Characters™ we have left.
Aside from Thrall, and Jaina, Magni and Moira.
Cairne and Vol’jin have been dead.
Sylvanas should be dead but she’s too popular.
I don’t want to lose any of them (except Sylv lol), but I certainly wouldn’t mind if we went a few expansions without them, because they hog too much of the spotlight.
Give us new, more original characters.
Thankfully, TWW seems to be going in that direction, a lot of new faces and some old ones (like Gazlowe) that don’t get enough attention.
The Night Elves didn’t want to go either, they were not happy that Stormwind didn’t send any regiment to help Darkshore and still licking their own wounds.
