The terrible maths of the M+ loot nerfs

So I just did a bit of a number crunch on the reality of the new loot nerfs to m+ rewards.

The TLDR is that m+ in dungeon rewards are now capped at 1/6 heroic track, and vault rewards are limited to 1/6 myth track.

Here is the biggest problem: Crests.

No changes have been announced to how many crests per upgrade, and how many are needed for your crafted gear.

So assuming its 15 crests per upgrade, and 60 for the max level crafted item:

We go from “I need to do 8x8+ for a myth track, and to upgrade it to max I need 4 timed dungeons to get 45 crests (3 upgrades from 1/4 to 4/4 at 15 a pop) and I still have 75 more crests possible per week so I have plenty for crafted gear and the last two levels of upgrade for heroic track gear I might get”

To “I need to do 8x10+, time 7 dungeons to get the 75 crests needed, leaving 45 crests possible for the week, which means I won’t be able to upgrade as much hero track gear as I used to be able to if I want to make crafted gear”

So it will have a fairly pronounced impact on how quickly we can gear up.

And I can’t for the life of me see how this won’t upset infinitely more people than it could ever possibly make happy.

EDIT:
To quote a post from further in the thread that summed it up brilliantly

It’s a good change. Instead of hitting gear cap week 2.

Too many people were having fun in M+. That was detected and the monkey paw was activated.

Yeah this new upgrade/6 system has killed any idea I had of playing alts. By the time you cap crests on your main you will be so sick of the dungeons. Ain’t no one got time to farm out a 2nd main to full 6/6 myth. Why even have warbands when the game is so unfriendly for alts.

If my main gets a 639 helmet, let my alt upgrade helmets to 639 without crests. If i can’t play alts efficiently I will just go play something else. I get BORED playing only 1 class because the game is tuned to spend 80 hours a week on 1 viable main and has no crests discount for alts.

BlizZard said they were going to move away from making things alt unfriendly in DF but now this is a huge step backwards heading into TWW.

The funnier part to me with this update is the return of dead key zones. As far as I can tell, there’s going to be zero reason to not run 10s over 7-9, since the dungeon gear tracks are all the same.

Wasn’t a large reason for the M+ squish in season 4 was to solve the dead key zones?

Oh I noticed that too, but I didn’t feel like writing an essay on ALL the problems with the direction they are taking M+ right now.

No, it wasn’t.

Yeah. I’ve pretty much decided not to even play TWW because of what they’ve done with it. It’s not the only reason, but it pretty much made the only reason I would have still tried, not worth the effort.

Not a fan of what they have done.

Well, I’m subbed until March so I’m sure I’ll still pop in and out of the forums from time to time… But I’ll be busy with work, so it won’t be anywhere near as often as now.

Biggest problem for me with the upgrade system is that there is still no alt catchup, making it take more time on your first character and thus making the gearing process slower for me is definitely something I enjoy but trying to play an alt and having to grind a 100+ M+ is definitely not something I enjoy as much.

But then I can actually work on an alt. I actually play more WoW when I feel like I’m done w a character for a season

We all do to be honest.

alts are boring, namely the gearing process.

Alts are fun and the lifeblood of replay value of the game IMVHO.

Well, if someone in my raid group can’t make it, I like to have a character to fill in, if needed.

You literally said it yourself though, you don’t treat it as an alt, it’s a 2nd main. It shouldn’t be so much easier to max a character just because you already did it.

When these changes go live the biggest problem will be gearing your main.
