The PVP gear grind is broken

PVP gearing is effectively impossible right now for the majority of players. Those who try will have to fight people in 220 gear the entire way. If they’re good enough to consistently beat people who wildly outgear them, they’ll eventually get a high enough rating for gear that’s still dramatically worse than the gear they’re fighting against.

This problem gets worse the longer the season goes on. It’s like Normal Castle Nathria being tuned for 220-geared players while only dropping 200 gear.

A 1400 rating is in the 55th percentile. That means 55% of people playing arenas aren’t able to get 207 gear. Contrast with Mythic+, which tosses out 226 gear like candy for near-zero effort.

PVP is currently a grind without any rewards for most people, so a lot of those people are opting out. This leads to rating deflation, which makes gearing up even harder.

Many people are turning to paid carries. They paid a highly skilled player to carry them to a desired rating so they can upgrade their PVP gear. In 9.1, however, you will have to maintain that rating from week to week to be able to continue to upgrade your gear (which is the equivalent of losing KSM every time you brick a key).

This means carry customers are going to have to keep coming back for more. Blizzard is actively encouraging the PVP carry industry. This does literally nothing to solve the gear grind problem, but it will certainly drive even more people out of rated PVP, which will exacerbate the problem even more.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why they’re trying to make the PVP grind problem even worse.

Are they not already addressing this next patch by once again making pvp gear go to a higher item level while in pvp combat?

Ive done it on like 3 or 4 toons whats the hard part?

Honor gear with the in-PvP only ilvl boost is the same ilvl as upgraded world quest gear from the new maw zone. Unless you are pushing at least 1600, then no, it isn’t addressed.

Did some RBG’s this season. Started late. I was able to reach 1600 pretty easily but then I hit a wall at around 1650-1700 rating where I would consistently face teams with +1800 rating players. I can only buy 213ilvl gear but I have to fight people with 220ilvl gear. Great.

Because they don’t care. Last expansion I hated the randomness of the gearing but I could still progress by putting in the time and effort. I used to play everyday and put hours upon hours into battlegrounds. This expansion, that’s impossible so I just don’t play. I had so much fun and they took that away with their stupid change requiring rating to gear up and this is just going to get worse with the upcoming patch. They really made this expansion for elite players only.

This is the result of negative feedback over legion templates and BFA scaling. Have your vendors, have your pvp gear unrestrained. At the start of the season, everyone was praising this system but now its degenerate design revealed itselfs somewhere around 2 months ago.

Gear grind does not belong in a competitive ladder. No if’s and or butts about it and “muh rpg” should flat out not apply to arena or RBGs otherwise it’ll die out as a scene by the halfway point of the season.

I suspect they put in this system as well to prolong engagement ultimately.

While I do see the concerns of this thread as valid to a degree. That’s hardly an ilvl difference in your case

This is intended to push players with honor gear to grind a PvE gear set if they want to get accepted into PvE groups.

Yeah, that’ll happen. Maybe once in a while.

They do care. They care enough to want to reward the players with the best PvE gear, and punish those who are doing it wrong to inspire them to step up their game and git gud.

Well that’s about as much thought as some of these forum posters are willing to make.
They assume no thought is being put into new patches. So in other words, the forum goers are not doing much thinking themselves. And they wonder why most of the player-base don’t bother using GD or why they never get responses from mods.

I see it happen on other game forums too, if they’re not productive the majority of the the time then the devs and mods find other ways to get feedback from the community that’s more constructive

The devs are not interested in getting feedback from the community. They have their plan, and the only thing that will get them to make changes is massive unsubs over something. And the “solution” is to make superficial changes that will get some players to resub in hopes that things will be improving soon™.

I’m not so sure about that, I would think it depends on the game company

I have no doubt you are right. I have no experience with other games or gaming companies. I just see the devs doubling down on failed ideas of the past and current bad ideas that are demotivating players and causing them to forget to play the game.

You previous post kinda implied the opposite IMO. No offense. Also as far as I’m aware it’s pretty much entirely new devs to put your faith in at this point for this game

Also doesn’t address the issue of rating tiers of conquest ilvl, where someone high ranked in one bracket can absolutely crush people in another bracket because they’re at a lower rating than their gear can be obtained at

Scaling pvp items up is nice, but high rated tiers of gear are also scaling up resulting in the same ilvl difference at lower ratings

Thats how the system is different from actual wod gearing :unamused:

Speaking as an outsider who’s just been observing how this unfolds, it is remarkable that the much-heralded PvP vendors from the start of the expansion now get so much derision.

However…

Question: Didn’t the people who aimed to do competitive PvP gear up ages ago, though? I would imagine most of the people getting in now are primarily motivated by gear. Which is the irony: The ones complaining that other PvPers are geared, are themselves doing it primarily for gear?

I don’t see anybody complaining about PvP gearing who are also talking about the competitive aspect. They’re just talking about how hard it is for them to get gear.

A thread about the pvp gear system being bad being supported by many competitive players including gladiators, rank ones and arena tournament players

Most competitive players don’t view pvp gearing as the point of pvping.
Pvp gearing is a means to an end to start playing the game, compared to pve gearing which is the point of pve

The system works well on paper when everyone starts fresh. It gets progressively worse as the season goes on

Seems like you didn’t read my post before replying to it.

Seems like you didn’t read the thread about why the system is bad?
People who do competitive pvp have alts or reroll, some people are not around at the start of a season for whatever reason, rank one spots have been sat on for months and preventing top of the ladder queues

This is wrong. People who enjoy pvp don’t pvp because they want high ilvl gear. They pvp because they enjoy it

Its the equivalent to someone doing castle natria because they want gear, but they’re a 207 ilvl dps and someone in their raid group is 226 ilvl so after they kill the boss the 207 ilvl dps doesn’t get loot because loot is only awarded to the top dps. So that 207 is never going to get gear to compete against the 226 that keeps showing up to his raid every week

The largest, most replied threads, with the most valuable feedback are all PvP related on the PTR forums and there isn’t a single blue response to any of it. The devs are clowns, bottom line.
