Let’s check the arguments of the people who want to remove meaningful choice so they get to change covenants like talents before each boss pull:
- “Blizzard cannot balance so a covenant will sim best obviously”
- “Covenants will be better for m+ while another covenant will be better for pvp etc”
- “I NEED to have the best build else I feel I am dragging down my raid”(Even though you dont need optimal best build to do content)
- “I want to best build so I can clear bosses asap so I NEED the most optimal build”
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE ARGUMENTS CAN BE USED FOR CLASSES. Yet blizzard doesnt give you a free level/gear boost when your class/spec is trash at pvp, raids. visions or m+.
Let’s check the above 4
- Same happens with classes, a class will always sim better than others because balance issues.
- Same happens with classes where some are roflstomp for pvp, others are trash, others are godlike in m+, others are terrible in m+ while others shine in raids.
- Based on that logic you are dragging down your raid by not playing the highest simming race, using the best profession such as engineering in pvp and more importantly if you arent playing FotM you are dragging your raid by not having the best possible DPS.
- Then reroll the FotM to clear the bosses faster
Now let’s point out some facts:
- Perfect balance will never be achieved, a class, covenant or whatever will always sim better than others
- The game is not designed to require the most optimal build outside of world first and first few weeks of mythic
- If you wipe are a boss and arent doing world first the issue is not the guy with the sub optimal build that does mechanics and performs well. It is people failing mechanics or simply being bad and not even able to reach anywhere near the potential of their copy pasted meta build
- Nobody is saying min maxing shouldnt be a thing, you are free to min max, what you are not free to do is tell others to min max.
- FOLLOWING A META BUILD GUIDE DOES NOT MAKE YOU A GOOD PLAYER. You would most likely be a better player if you spend effort in your class, learning it and playing it instead of following whatever guide tells you the best build is and how to play it. By forcing such people to either leave or stick to one covenant we are forcing them to stay sub optimal in some form of content making them get gud at their class by sticking to it and also making them realize YOU DONT NEED THE MOST OPTIMAL BUILD TO CLEAR HEROIC, M15s OR EVEN MYTHIC RAIDS AFTER THE FIRST FEW WEEKS.

“The hunt” is god tier demon hunter PvP ability. It’s tied to unfitting fae covenant and also complete garbage in pve.
So going for aesthetics or good pve skill i’ll be missing top pvp ability anyway. Problem is much deeper than “OnLy ThE mInMaXeRs CaRe ”

Indeed just like rogues and dhs are dominating pvp while other classes and spec are beyond hopeless or requiring 20 times the effort, coordination and skill to reach the same level.
The issue is really not different at all compared to classes.
Blizzard will try to balance the covenant abilities just like they are trying to balance classes, so we know what will happen and that is how the games’ rules work.
Unless you are advocating for free class/gear/level boosts because a class is bad at X content you cant really whine.

i think you should be able to unlock all abilities and then chose freely. Maybe for some currency that you need more with every new ability.
Maybe not from start, maybe for 9.2 patch or something.

Classes and specs are also all unlocked but unless you spend effort leveling and gearinging them, you wont get to change classes freely.
And you can do the same thing with covenants, you ll simply have to level and gear 4 characters

nah, there should be choice with meaning. you don’t get to be the best at everything

disagree, i don’t need that choice. Game was fine without that choice.

I’m very glad Blizz isn’t going to boil covenants down to rep factions with pretty aesthetics.
Covenants will be like choosing a class. You won’t have the best of everything, and you won’t be able to easily switch around. You pick an identity and you stick to it. That’s what it’s like to pick a class and that’s what it’ll be like to pick a covenant.

Of course they are , their choice is based on functionality
Even if it is 0.1% effectiveness they will pick it because they are convinced any other is poor gameplay choice.
They are slaves to peer pressure and acceptance and are incapable of making an independent choice of their own defended by my fun is being stressed all the time .

Exactly, you dont see people asking for free level/gear boost because a DH is better at X raid boss, they are instead forced to level a DH and spend time gearing said DH if they want to be the most optimal.

It’s like some people want covenants to be bad…

Same can be said about classes quite literally

You’re misrepresenting a lot of arguments here. I don’t want to be locked into a situation where I have no choice that feels good to make. If I have no choice I enjoy, why would I play the game?

How?
You choose to level and gear and DK, what if it felt terrible in m+ or gets nerfed
Do you expect blizzard to give you a free level/gear boost on a class that is good and feels better in m+?
If you dont like the DK you instead are gonna level and gear another class, and you can do the same with covenants, level and gear another character and choose a different covenant.
If you dont like any class then you stop playing the game

The game has always had that choice though. Starting when you first pick a race and class

I enjoy the dk playstyle. Also, all classes are viable in 90% of content.
However, what if I want to dps or want mobility as a tank, but I’m locked into a shield ability, but if I want mobility I have to be a nature dk? That’s no fun. I want aesthetics to not influence gameplay and vice versa.

incorrect comparison. Correct would be if in Legion you could pick only one artifact and to pick new one you’d have to delete first

Seems like you hope there are bad abilities in covenants just so you can laugh at the people who actual enjoy optimizing their characters.

This could apply to both Ralph and Jojo.

To those arguing about making the wrong choice and being locked in. Remember the first leveling experience forces you to gain the abilities of each covenant before choosing which one you like. You won’t be going in blind.
