Thanks everyone for your good thoughts; they are much appreciated. I’m still adjusting to the “new normal”.

My sister talked with Blizzard and was able to take over our brother’s account. Her goal is to finish all the quests in his three characters’ logs. She had been playing with him regularly the last few months and feels finishing things would be a good tribute.

Would that Blizzard was as responsive to our request(s) as they were to hers. True, we’re asking for something a little more complicated than simply changing an account from one person to another, but we’ve been asking for much longer.

My goal is to keep posting until the permissions are broken up again–or the thread is closed. Somehow I feel my sister will likely meet her goal first.

Seems to me that they want to promote communities at the expense of guilds, maybe they have it in mind to have cross faction communities replace guilds so they don’t have to address faction imbalance in a future patch?

Nothing makes sense about this other than them being completely disconnected from the wants and needs of their playerbase.

Why extent the post count limit without answering the players on why you chose to make something worse for no reason.

“Mom, the house is on fire!” “Thanks Andy!”.

Actually, they didn’t “choose” to make it worse. Ion admitted in a Q&A a while back that the permissions issue is a problem they’re “actively working on” (whatever that means).

I’m wondering if anyone who checks on this thread is on the PTR and if they have any information on if there’s anything coming up for guilds in 8.3. There was a revamp of the guild finder supposedly coming in 8.2.5, but that has yet to make it live.*

It seems to me that the communities feature has done a great job of completely screwing up guilds–to the point that even Blizzard can’t launch a new guild feature they fully intended to launch. I don’t know how entangled it all is, but it makes me think they should just yank the communities and start over. (Full disclosure: I have never used the communities, so I realize I’m being unfair to those who do.)

*EDIT!
The finder is now live! (According to the site news feed.) I’m going to log in and check it out.

I’m not much in favor of communities. I get that they were trying to bridge other games and that’s great, but it doesn’t replace guilds within wow. Any community I’ve joined is just a smaller version of trade chat that has less trolling. The one that I did join who is legit a raid team, they use discord to chat more anyway or we chat within the raid instance cuz that’s the only time we play together.

Hello everyone,

I’m checking in again to make sure my voice is heard. Everyone contributing to this discussion needs to keep doing so.

As of now, I still haven’t assigned anyone in our guild with the “Is Officer” check box since there are certain permissions I will not assign, regardless of rank. As a result, nobody in the guild has access to any of those eight privileges since they’re all lumped together in a one-size-fits-all definition of “an officer,” as defined by someone on the Blizzard WoW team. I’ve been playing WoW since March of 2005, raiding since Molten Core of 2005, and leading our guild as guild master since TBC in 2007. I know our guild and how to effectively manage it, not some stranger at Blizzard who knows nothing about our community.

Please give us the individual permission customization we had prior to patch 8.0. That’s all I’m asking for.

For further recommendations to help guild management, add a complete log/record system for the guild bank so the guild master can keep track of cumulative records on gold deposits, gold repairs, gold withdraws, item deposits, and item withdraws. If WoW developers can create and maintain a statistics tab with all kinds of totally useless information for my character’s history, they can add a feature that lets me keep track of guild bank records. I’m not asking for a permanent record, but maybe something that goes back one year or something. Perhaps something with sort features to look at what individuals did. That would actually help guilds and their leaders.

Regardless, please address this problem. This thread began on July 17, 2018. We’re now at November 20, 2019. It’s been one year and four months with no fix. That’s absolutely absurd.

Many other recommendations to help guilds have already been provided in this thread. This information can be gleaned. You have what you need, and the “discussion” has already occurred. Read it, and pass the information along to the next group of people who need to make the corrections. Failure to do so will just further the stereotypes of poor communication (both within company departments and towards the community), and the apparent growing disregard for the gaming and guild community of WoW… which is sad.

I will continue to check in here until the change is made. Everyone else needs to do so, too.

Looks like they instituted the new guild search function but still no change to fixing the permissions. Still waiting for those permission fixes, Blizz.

They did indeed put the new guild finder into the game today.
I tested it out both as guildmaster and as someone “looking”. It seems to be better than the old guild finder, and it got rid of all those old guild recruitment messages from guilds who don’t even exist anymore.

Now if only we could get the guild permissions fixed.

Edit: BTW “is officer” gives people the ability to list the guild in guild finder and mess with your recruitment message. Yet another thing that needs to be separate!

And I have just signed my newest recruit!

They were online when I sent the invite, so I didn’t get to see how the offline invite thing works. Still, I was able to check out the finder, make a recruitment ad, and get a recruit. The finder says my ad is good for 30 days. I assume it will count down.

Fingers are crossed that we’ll see more guild improvements soon!

No one had a guild “on launch”…nice work on getting it going in 2004. I don’t see your guild clearing any raid content or even dungeons till 2011 in Classic? Please let me know if wow armory is broken…Thanks

I let my officers know months ago this was coming. I am the only person allowed to recruit anyways so…not an issue.

Yup it’s an incremental positive. Lotsa things have been done incrementally…just ask Ghandi

I have already noticed that armory is all wrong regarding a bunch of my own achieves, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s wrong on other people’s.

Edit: Some info on Wretched Mist’s guild:

It appears their guild was founded in 2004 and cleared the Eternal Palace on July 22nd, among other achieves.

Right…but if you’re claiming to be a “launch guild” perhaps a Classic clear of something before 2010? You’re making be a bad guy here…you all know what I’m saying. The OP didn’t respond cuz, he knows I’m right…again we padding posts or trying to be a nice community of people discussing varying points of view here?

Everyone else can apparently be critical but when I question something someone has to come to defend a poster. No one is under attack. It’s just facts…and if I can’t have opinion, state facts, and point out inaccuracies…what makes this different from an echo chamber? Like I’ve said before, if you only want one point of view here, say so and I’m gone.

Wretchedmist didn’t respond because all he does is come here every few weeks to post his opinion about the permissions changes and make a few suggestions for improving guild management. He doesn’t hang around like some of us.

Sorry, but you weren’t “pointing out inaccuracies”, you were criticizing for absolutely no reason. It’s a fact that the armory doesn’t list everything at all accurately. His guild was launched in 2004, and you chose to interpret that as saying something he never said.

You’re fine with the permissions changes, we get that. How would breaking them up again harm your guild? Why do you keep coming here to say we’re stupid for wanting granular permissions–something that even Ion says they’re actually working on returning to us?

Since the new guild finder launched I have had six requests for membership in my guild. I would love to give my new members more controls when they earn promotions, but I can’t do that when nearly all permissions are lumped under “is officer”.

We are NOT a raiding guild. That doesn’t make us in any way inferior to guilds that raid. Our purpose is completely different, and our permissions needs are different. I truly don’t understand why you can’t grasp that simple fact, and why you have to criticize others for not being like you.

If this doesn’t strongly hint at the degree to which our objections to the bundled permissions are being ignored, I don’t know what would. Instead of separating permissions, they add another one to the bundle.

Generally, from a development perspective, these things are pretty simple. A checkbox is a simple boolean value in a database (yes/no, on/off) - doesn’t take much space to store or much effort to code. The check is almost as simple: “if (value-we-are checking = yes) then allow-this-process to occur”.

Maybe they can let one of us code it for them?

So, since the day the new guild finder launched, I’ve gotten eight requests. Four have joined (three of those accepted offline). One joined a different guild. Three haven’t responded.

I do like the new finder. I like that I can peruse the “applicant history” so I can see that one accepted applicant chose a different guild and three haven’t responded at all. I can also see the four that accepted membership.

I’m becoming much less happy about the permissions. I’m trying to give my newer members more abilities–especially the two who generously donated both gold and useful items to the guild bank. I’m juggling the few permissions that aren’t under the “is officer” label as well as the bank tab permissions. It would be more than nice if I had more choices of permissions to award them.

Please, Blizz, stop doing dumb stuff like removing the ability to purchase the Brutosaur mount in 9.0 and focus on fixing and improving things like guilds and guild permissions.
