I feel the same way. The admin changes are absolutely horrible and it completely strips away what I can do as a GM in terms of access and resource use for my guild. I have members that have been with us since we started that I think should have a little more access than others, even if it’s just the ability to help invite the alts of guild members who are already vetted with us. As it stands, the only thing separating me from the officers is a title and full access to the bank. And the separating line between officers and non officers is 99% access… or nothing.
I, and many other GMs, work very hard to keep our guild running smoothly and its members happy. My guild has a mix of social and raiding so it takes a lot of my actual time outside of actual gameplay to help people learn strats and plan social events, and that’s not counting in game time for recruitment and just general guild things. I don’t know what Blizz was hoping to accomplish with this change but it’s incredibly disheartening and frankly a little insulting. We’ve had almost no communication on this. I realize that Blues are typically stuck between a rock and a hard place with posting information- you’re either quoted as gospel, even when it’s very clear that what’s in the works may not be final, or they get run over by a mob. But the feedback from this is almost unanimous and terribly unhappy.
Sometimes when something is new you find that with enough time, you find that you actually like it better. I am afraid that’s not the case here - and the majority of the major complaints/dislikes I share.
The biggest one for me is guild hierarchy levels. I can’t stress enough how not having the ability to have a customized permissions level is. If anything I would like to see the OLD UI have more features. Needs of guilds and access is very individualized and cannot be put in a cookie cutter approach.
The ‘new’ ui remains buggy (invite/notes/assigning ranks) and in most cases I revert to the old code (thank goodness it is still there) with /groster to do most things. Guild Roster Manager as an addon has a lot of nice features. It also takes a lot of resources and has a lot of challenges for a guild the size of our community.
I understand that ‘just returning back to where it is’ is likely not as easy as it sounds – but the old UI was functional I miss that.
We as the Guild Leaders of Warcraft’s many unique guilds, (once described by Blizzard themselves as the “backbone of Wow”) deserved so much better than a proverbial stab in the back with no answers from Blizzard as to why we were stabbed.
I’m going to hazard a guess that they’re trying to go for this integrated experience between BNet, communities, and guilds, hence why this was rolled out along side the new communities feature. The problem is that they didn’t just roll it all into a new UI and leave it be, they flat out changed admin functionality in the process and the new change is the antithesis of GM/guild administration. It is probably one of the best cases of Blizzard feeling like they know better when in reality the concept is extremely poor and does nothing to actually help the community.
I don’t like to immediately think that it was done with ill will, because it’s very likely they felt like they were streamlining… something?.. that honestly didn’t need to be streamlined. But even on paper it doesn’t make sense to make access all or nothing so I’m not really sure who came up with the idea and how it got pushed to live.
Pure speculation here…But my best guess (based on how buggy the guild/community features were in the pre-patch), is that Blizzard was attempting to roll out communities, discovered some spaghetti code or other form of fatal error that messed with guilds, did a quick bandaid to attempt to get things ready for the pre-patch, and then the whole thing went ker-PLOW. And here we are.
I’m not convinced that there was any reasoning behind the change other than, we need to get communities live and have them not crash the whole game. The changes were clearly not tested, and clearly not well thought out.
So, I’ve decided to continue mining earlier posts in this thread for their good ideas. I think in a thread this long, it’s a good thing to quote some of the more interesting (to me) thoughts and suggestions for those who haven’t been reading all along (or who may have forgotten a post or two).
I really like the idea of added incentives for guilds. Of course, one has to be careful of exploits, like the gold bonus that used to go into the GB for every quest completed by members.
Still, the number one thing we need is guild control back in the hands of guild leaders. Let us decide which ranks have access to which permissions instead of forcing all permissions into a single “is officer” heading.
Edit: I just want to mention for those who may have missed it that Blizzard explicitly asked for other ideas we’d like to see for guild improvements beyond fixing the permissions issue. This was one of the few things that made me feel maybe we’d get some action on the permissions problem eventually. Somewhere earlier in this thread was a quote/link/whatever about it.
Agreed. I don’t think it was necessarily done out of some weird way to screw over GMs. It just adds insult to injury that it’s so incredibly poorly thought out and in spite of the feedback we’ve not had more than a “we see this post” comment. Even if they just come out and say they have no plans to change this and it was fully intended at least it’s something to go on. Don’t get me wrong, it would still feel bad but at least it’s something, lol.
Indeed, thankful for our guild. The “fun” has definitely gotten lost throughout our concern for the guild ui. Let’s make sure that Blizz knows we liked what we had before because it was fun! Enjoy and be thankful!
Your name has made me want a baked 'tater with chives.
Also bump. Please, for the love of cranberry sauce, let us break up and delegate guild permissions as we see fit. Please reply in any way whatsoever at this point, oy vey…
I’ve discussed it in depth with my wife for awhile now. And yes I’ve been quiet lately, but we had to talk about how long we could keep this up. Unfortunately we’ve come to a point where we no longer believe we can continue. We’re not getting anywhere with what we have in front of us and an answer isn’t going to be given to us.
So therefore…
Roguewit…are you McEuan’s brother?
PS. Bliz - Status update on Reversion of Permission Controls Please.
Bang goes any hope of reviving my RP guilds: personal interactions are the meat and mead of us. To cripple guilds further, as this action has done, is only counter-productive.
I add my voice to those saying; roll this one back, Blizzard, and fast!
Happy Turkey Day! I’m thankful for all of you for keeping this thread going. Stubbornness can be a very good thing, and I believe that together we can make a difference!
I’m thankful for all the awesome people in my guild. We’ve become a family over the last 10 years. Here’s to the next 10 years of slaying dragons, old god abominations, and undead monstrosities together!
I’m thankful for the blues who have taken the time to read this thread and forward it along to the devs. And in a fit of hopeful optimism, I’m thankful for any devs who have started looking into this. I look forward to hearing about solutions soon.
May your mashed potatoes be creamy and your turkey roasted to perfection!
