End of season 3/start of 4. No friends helped, I did just world quests/cloak/capped CP/assaults in Uldum/Vale. No benthic gear as I haven’t touched Nazjatar after I got the rep for flying.

I’m not trying to disrespect you, but I think we’re in agreement about time intervals (notice I didn’t grill you on how much you played per day). It takes more than an hour or two to do the cloak quests he first time (not the same as starting S2, I know), not to mention Naz intro quests for the neck ilvl then WQ grind for gear which can take some time depending how unlucky you are with available quests.
It’s a PvE barrier to entry into PvP. You can say that you don’t feel it’s a significant barrier and I couldn’t refute that any more than you could refute that I see it as significant since they’re both just our opinions. Like I said, conceding a point doesn’t mean you lose the argument, I’ll just call it a stale mate since our opinions seem to cancel each other out.

I miss the days when you could banish paladins when they popped angel wings. Risky move against a lock, risky move.

It’s a different kind of grind, I’ll give you that, and maybe a bit more time consuming for a brand new player without a main. But regardless, starting 3 months into an expansion will have a wide gear gap no matter what expansion (minus Legion)

In MoP on my MW most people couldn’t kill me until I was OOM.
I also remember early MoP when warlocks had a version of soul link that transferred healing between them and their pet and my lock friend would hide his pet on the roof or somewhere and I’d heal it while he could tank 3+ players down below and they had no idea what was healing him. They nerfed that mid expansion though I think? It was highly amusing while it lasted.
I don’t think people forget this, I think the largest source of complaint is the catch up process and that it involves multiple grind rather than one. In the past the catch up process was fast and could involve some honor gear while you were still getting the conq gear. There were no additional grinds beyond the basic gear grind to catch up. For some specs maybe there was a fancy weapon or to a lesser extent some trinket from raids you’d really miss out on, which was a shame for them, but it wasn’t a massive issue for every spec. Things like essences and corruption are a significant source of power for every spec.
