The greatest deception in the universe is the light keeping our attention focues on the void and how bad it is. We didn’t know until it was too late how bad the light truly was. Illidan should have been a massive red flag but not even velen could have foreseen the true intentions of the light. The light is out to conquer the cosmos under the guise of being “absolute good” and people will join thinking it’s for the good of the universe
This betrays a misunderstanding of what the Light actually is.
In the end of the Alliance Shadowmoon Valley storyline (and yes, I’m breaking my usual “we shall never speak of this again” policy when it comes to WoD), AU Velen drops this easily-missed gem in his “in case of my death” message:
“Remember, life is the light, and the light is life itself.”
It’s not “absolute good” and never was – life was always what you make of it, neither more nor less.
Likewise, I suspect the Void isn’t absolute evil, and never was … but I sure as hell ain’t gonna keep it in the icebox with my milk and eggs. You gots to be careful with that sort of thing.
Every school of magic is self destructive in the WoW universe. No matter what power you focus on it will lead you down a path of destruction and death. The warcraft universe is at war with itself. Life vs Death. Arcane vs Fel. Light vs Void. No matter what happens the war will always continue because if one overpowers the other nothing will remain.
If the Leigon won the universe would be ash. If the void wins all will be consumed. If the Light win there will be no choice and life would be pointless. Life and death are kind of mixed where life always leads to death, but too much life will consume all the resources leading to death anyways. Everything dies even the stars. Arcane is similar to the light where it wants absolute order to everything but from a building blocks of the universe level not so much mortal will.
So no school is better then the others. Balance is all we can hope for.
It’s that part of supersymmetry where each part of you that is Light has a super partner that is Void, and vice versa. At high enough energies they merge into one unified entity.
The Light is the source of all life in the cosmos. Its positive energies, residing in every living being, in every heart and soul, is everywhere, binding all sentient beings together as one.
Life is clearly a distinct and separate cosmology realm from the Light. The Light is as close to the Fel as it is to Life.
Technically, the Light & Void are the source of all Life in the universe.
They were the two primary forces that existed before the other cosmology domains and their explosive interaction when they met was what caused the rest of the cosmos and Reality to form.
Life however arose as a separate domain, not from the Light itself.
And… Death also came from the interaction those two domains created.
And the Void? The Void seemingly fears Death and looks at it as the true enemy of everything… while the Light might be willing to make deals with it given Calia Menethil.
We’ll see more in the future I’m sure, but Light != Life, and Void != Death. They are wholly separate fundamental forces of the universe.
I have to deal with it in real life, I didn’t want it in my escapist fantasy. I wanted evil to be evil, and good to be good. Not evil to be mostly evil sometimes good and the good to be mostly good sometimes evil.
Life magic, as the way Blizzard describes it, would be more appropriately described as “Growth magic”. Whereas the Light created sentient life, the “Life” sphere of magic lets that life blossom faster than normal, whereas the opposite of Life magic, Death magic, wilts and decays.
In the end, it’s all really messy and the more Blizzard tries to “clean it up” with retcons, the worse and more jumbled it becomes.
It also appears that one of the significant differences is “sentient” vs “non-sentient”, too.
