The harsh truth; the "Dracthyr" were a mistake for Warcraft

When Blizzard first announced the Dracthyr Evokers, they said the Class Fantasy for them was to be “playable Dragons”.

Which immediately begs the question;

…Well, why weren’t they?

We already had shapeshifting characters with Druids, and having a “Dragon” race-class hybrid that can shift between a mortal Visage and an actual Dragon form just seems like a no-brainer.

Like… as soon as you talk about a “playable dragon”, it’s literally the first thing that comes to mind.

For reasons beyond my understanding, they opted to go with a humanoid dragon race. But elected not to go with Drakonids, which have long been established as part of the fiction. Presumably, this decision was so they could wear armor, except… well, we obviously don’t have armor.

So what the hell happened?

I figure they likely intended for them to wear armor – after all, they get a few options via the barbershop, so it’s obviously not a “creative decision” – but ran into some kind of hiccup and couldn’t get it working in time for launch, so they settled on the aforementioned “barbershop armor”.

So we have a race that was pulled out of thin air, given a humanoid appearance so they could wear armor, but couldn’t actually wear armor.

Now let’s focus on the “race-class hybrid” thing for a second, because this is super important:

This was immediately met with some skepticism, but I actually thought it was a great choice. After all, if they truly wanted to commit to the “playable dragon” bit, that was going to be hugely important. The “class” itself would need to be capable of doing things that literally no existing race would be capable up, like wing buffets or tail swipes.

But because the Dracthyr are humanoid, it feels like the vision itself was watered down. And we see this with Dracthyr being given other classes to choose from, which obviously means those “dragon” elements obviously can’t be that important.

Frankly, this just further paints them into a corner, because now there is even less they can do with the class, because it is now attached to a race that has to be all these other classes.

As such, we’re effectively left with both a race and a class that feel like a half-hearted attempt at anything actually exciting. They’re far too restricted to be considered a “real” race (and also far less stylized than any other race in WoW), and now the class itself is paralyzed from being able to fully embrace the “playable dragon” theme.

In all honesty, if I were to make a suggestion to Blizzard, I would genuinely suggest “retconning” the Dracthyr.

Abandon the notion of them becoming other classes, and instead go all-in on the “playable dragon” fantasy. Change their name to “Dragon”. You can keep their lore entirely the same, other than instead of “draconic soldiers”, they’re instead members of a “Prismatic Dragonflight”, which never aged to maturity. Their story remains almost entirely untouched.

What DOES change is that you start off customizing your Dragon form. You would literally choose between any of the Dragonriding mounts, as they have a pretty extensive amount of animations and customization options anyways, just remove the saddle. You’d obviously be sized appropriately, something comparable to a Druid’s Bear form.

And when you unlock your Visage, you can choose the “Dracthyr” hybrid model (no reason to do away with the model), or any race on your given faction. Just remove the silly lines around “their Visage looks unique”, it made no sense to begin with, and makes less sense now that we’re making them legitimate Dragons.

Instead of the Evoker feeling like this pseudo-Mage that wears Mail armor, it would instead BE that “Playable Dragon” that Blizzard said they wanted to give us. They would have a long legacy that weaves effortlessly into WoW and whatever the future holds.

Because otherwise, they’re just going to remain a race of naked lizard-people that stick out like a sore thumb, with a “class” that has zero inspiration or weight.

Well written. Could you follow this up with “Vulpera, another silly mistake that cost lives.”

It almost gave the impression that Dracthyr were like mini-Aspects, but far less powerful. I was hoping for more dragon and less Figment (of your imagination from Epcot/Disney). Missed a real opportunity to create a cool dragon race that looked like dragon mounts, on a smaller scale, that could fight.

I knew immediately they were a mistake and need either drastic changes or outright deletion; unfortunately neither happened.

That’s a really good question because they can’t wear a lot of the armour anyway. I can think up no good reason for making them humanoid.

I think they’re neat though, so apples and oranges.

It’s not a “harsh truth”, but just one person’s opinion. Dracthyr are pretty cool, imo, and WoW is probably the MMO that did the “draconic race” thing the best.

Look at EQ and FFXIV if you really want to see bad examples of “playable dragons”.

They seem really popular for a mistake.

Hi! I’m a Dragon. Anyone who says otherwise can do things I’m not allowed to say here.

Unpopular opinion, but as much as I like the Dracthyr having other classes Soon :tm:, they really just fit the primary class they came with–Evoker. They were literally made for/with it.

The nerfing of Glide for Non-Evokers, due to them ‘spreading their wings’ outside of that class, really sucks for those who wanted that mobility for classes who don’t have them… but it also made a lot of folks feel pressured to Race Change because of it. Not because they actually care about the race (let’s be honest, they rather be Pretty Privilege’d aka elf-adjacent; hence why Blizz has decided to fully cave to the constant Visage-wanters lol), but due to the extra mobility they had.

With that said, I tested the Glide on the PTR and it really wasn’t that awful, unless they plan to nerf bat it even harder…

As much as I enjoy the class fantasy (their Soar is the only reason I really bother with Skyriding), I do wish we had gotten playable Sethrak and/or Arakkoa…

I like them too but I do see why people have a problem with them. They don’t really fit the aesthetic and tbh that’s probably why I like them.

(Also they’re as big as Tauren but don’t get to buff their mount size like Tauren do.)

I truly believe they intended to make dragons playable, but the strike happened during DF development which absolutely wrecked the progress made on them.

Think about it. Isn’t it weird that the only visage forms are human female and blood elf male? Why not double blood elf? Why not double human? Why not male/female for both?

I think this was another WoD situation. Intended to give us fully playable dragons with dragon form as a racial mount, ran out of time after only 2 visage models had been finished, then reused DH assets for the Dracthyr form.

Explains the lack of true visage options, the reuse of assets for the “main” form of Dracthyr, unfinished implementation of gear, etc.

People probably don’t like them cause something of “ew furries” or “ew scalies” or something.

Tbf, you guys were such a mistake that death wing literally put you in a box to collect dust. At least the earthen had a reason, their machine was broken. For you guys, yeah, failed experiment.

I’ve heard some of that in regards to dracthyr (albeit not nearly as much as I have in regards to vulpera). But what I’ve seen more of is complaints about the model being androgynous-looking.

You’re playing what should be a character customization option, though.

It is my opinion that Blizzard had to steer away from giving us true dragons as a playable race since in the lore Dragons have always been considered neutral. Splitting the flights between the two factions, to me, make no sense.

Therefore to give us dragons Blizzard had to create a new dragon-like race to be the playable character. One they could split into two groups with differing ideology.

I always hoped that the dracthyr would have two forms. The normal would be a bipedal dragon/human hybrid and the second form would be an actual mini dragon. In dragon form they wouldn’t need armor or weapons. They would have their natural claws, tails and scales. It would be similar to a Druid.
