This has been an issue here and there for a while now, but lately the number of blatantly inappropriate names I have seen is insane. Somehow, players are leveling and gearing deep into endgame content with these names while Blizzard does nothing.
A couple of things to note before I share examples:
-
This game is rated T for Teen.
-
This is an MMORPG (with emphasis on the RPG). Unless Blizzard is somehow fine with people roleplaying as extremely disturbing things, then this is a serious problem.
Here are just a few names I encountered this evening alone:{Names Removed - please do not list names you feel inappropriate publicly, use the reporting system in-game so that they can be reviewed} If this post ends up removed because of the vulgarity of these names, then Blizzard better be removing the players who created these characters in the first place.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I for one think these names are wildly inappropriate for a T-rated game. How have these players managed to keep their accounts untouched for so long? Is Blizzard signaling that this is acceptable? Because these three examples came from just a 3 minute window of looking at trade chat and at players around me, and there are literally thousands more like them.
I’m not trying to play hall monitor, if someone wants a goofy name, fine. But some players are clearly crossing the line. Is this multi-billion dollar company really not capable of filtering these people out?
Just thought it was worth bringing this to Blizzard’s attention in the hope that something will finally be done.

Ngl all of those names gave me a little smirk except “the last one” but the best thing you can do if you find a name inappropriate is report the name, and they’ll eventually get a forced name change. If they change it back to the same name and get reported too many times they’ll just start catching suspensions.

There’s a report player name. Use it

If I reported every single wildly inappropriate name I came across I would spend more time reporting names than playing the actual game. While still a good thing to do, clearly the issue should be tackled more so on Blizzards end at this point.
I like your name
Wuxi > Wuxia > Chinese fantasy novels
I’ve read a few Wuxia novels, they’re quite enjoyable.
I honestly think that the names are fine. The only one that I’d report is {Removed} and even again I’d likely not because I generally don’t report people unless I suspect them of being bots. Blizzard are more than likely fully aware of them.
I’ll assume you’ve reported the names as inappropriate. I’ve done that myself both in Classic and Retail on multiple occasions. Obviously you’ll never know if Blizz do do anything about them, as that’s not how that works. Some have managed to get a name passed by reversing it. I for one don’t see how people can find this funny or accepatable, reguardless of the age the game is aimed at. No doubt this will get flamed, as being too precious.
They’re getting by because not many people care enough to report them, only softies care about reporting " {Removed}". While i find these names odd or gross, i don’t really care enough to report it as its not a big deal.
I’m more offended by people using accented characters in their name because the original was taken.

The community is either right-click reporting, or they are not. If you care about these things, then that is one action you can take. If enough others care to do the same, then a name-change will be flagged.
This is a massive pet peeve of mine as well, but it’s supported by Blizzard, so…

Blizzard stopped enforcing their rules a long time ago and left it up to the community to report things. They will not act on anything that is not reported.
As they should have known (and perhaps did know), this will rapidly cause a community to become worse. After over a decade of this, the WoW community is, well, what it is.

Years ago I saw an UD rogue in AB named Metalenema, and some years later a UD shadow priest named Herpdagone.
Those were the funniest non-cow names I remember. Cows seem to more often have funny names related to milk or steak.
I have even taken it to heart and made a macro for cows that yells Torro! Torro!
certainly felt like they fully quit doin it around late 2014 and things got much much worse instantly.

“online content not rated by the ESRB”
Yes you will. Add them to your friends list and see them stay forever, I still have some weirdnamed “friends” I added, and reported, in 2019. Same with bots.
