My ticket (#76718179) on the topic was closed with the standard “go to the forums” response, after searching the forums I have not found an answer to my question/concern.
The words “completing this layer will also grant you awards from all lower levels” when you mouse-over any layer in Torghast that is not layer 1 means that when the reward for layer 1 is 120 Soul Ash, layer 2 is 220 Soul Ash, and layer 3 is 305 Soul Ash, that completing layer 3 without completing the previous layers should net 305+220+120, or 645 Soul Ash. That is not happening. Is the wording in-game intentionally misleading?
To what end would the developers go out of their way in this specific instance to intentionally mislead players?

not really… it seems you’re misunderstanding it.
doing layer 3 first, gives you the rewards for 2 and 1.
what you see on the mouse-over, is the combined total for completing 3 first.
you get 100~ish per layer

It probably also mentiuoned third-party websites like WoWhead.
Completing a Layer grants you any rewards for lower Layers, so you can start wherever you want; no need to start at the bottom every time. To unlock a Layer, all you need to do is complete it.
You can start at any Layer you’ve unlocked. Completing whichever Layer you begin on will earn you the rewards for the lower Layers you skipped.

Those are already the cumulative rewards including the previous layers. You’re trying to do math that the game has already done for you and shown you the total.
