How do you vote a thread to “Off-topic” ?
The answer is not to blur the lines between the words “sex” and “gender” but to continue to use them to define separate terms.
Agreed. But if there is to be legitimate popular acceptance of this usage, the “vernacular” usage needs to be acknowledged. It can’t be dismissed outright, as that’s simply going to entrench someone more firmly in their stance.
Simply enlighten them as to how we use the terms, explain why, and allow them to make their own decision. A reasonable person will dismiss their dated usage of the terms on their own. An unreasonable person is going to remain unreasonable regardless of your approach. But if you treat that reasonable person as unreasonable from the outset, their response is going to be unreasonable.
And to bring us back to the topic at hand, this is precisely the approach that Blizzard has utilized with the Drac’thyr. The queer-coding is not “in your face” or combative. It simply exists, integrated with the game world, with no pomp or circumstance. And some people will pick up on this, even if subconsciously, and will be more open to accepting examples that they encounter in the real world.
Weird to tell everyone their Dracthyr are gay.
This post right here, officer.
I wish as a society we could get to a point where labels weren’t a thing, weren’t necessary and we could peacefully coexist.
Look at our similarities and not our differences.
Completely agreed. But they’re entirely necessary until that point is reached. You can’t deal with issues of discrimination or erasure without using specific terminology to address it.
I initially wrote a whole dissertation trying to explain how technological advancement and financial equality between the two major sexes effects social gender norms and expressions.
(Major sexes because other sexes do exist ie. xxy)
But then I realized that you wouldn’t try to understand anyway. Because somehow you thought I was attacking working class people even tho I’m working class myself.
You people don’t engage in conversations you look for exactly what you want to hear and try to twist it into some negative spin.
Anyway this race is a perfect example of how to ungender a society. Allowing for a complete range of possibilities between the masculine and feminine despite body parts.
That’s coool!
You get to be who you want to be and I get to be who I want to be. Perfect
Sex and gender share the same definition. From Merriam-Webster:
sex:
1a: either of the two major forms of individuals that occur in many species and that are distinguished respectively as female or male especially on the basis of their reproductive organs and structures
gender:
2a: SEX sense 1a
Don’t bother with gays like him. They want to be normal so bad that they attack queerness because they think it reflects negatively on them being perceived as just a dude who likes dudes
Eh, I think we’re at like 30% sincere discussion, 70% ridiculousness. Which is a pretty good ratio, considering the subject matter and venue. Hopefully the latter category drops off and the former is able to pick up without the distractions and derailments.
That definition is wrong.
youve played a big role in that 30% hats off to you, we always have to remember that there are many who read these forums but don’t post, some posts in this thread are great for those truly interested. I would go in so far as to say for this particular subject matter, more would rather stay as readers rather than participants.
You are saying the Merriam-Webster definition is wrong? Please, explain.
Oxford English Dictionary’s defintion of sex, first entry:
a. Either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions; (hence) the members of these categories viewed as a group; the males or females of a particular species, esp. the human race, considered collectively. Occasionally with plural verb.
OED’s entry on gender, specifically the U.S.:
" The state of being male or female as expressed by social or cultural distinctions and differences, rather than biological ones; the collective attributes or traits associated with a particular sex, or determined as a result of one’s sex."
Also, the way we use “gender” as opposed to “sex” day-to-day. We don’t say “sex-nonconforming” of people who don’t follow gender stereotypes, we say “gender-nonconforming”.
It seems we’ve been banished to the Story forums to die with the rest of the threads here. C’est la vie. I don’t think this is the appropriate venue as this topic has everything to do with the design of the new race, and nothing to do with the supporting narrative, but it is what it is.
Oh, so the usual drivel trying to change the definition of gender. Carry on with the gaslighting then. Meanwhile I identify as King and my pronouns are “Your Majesty/His Majesty”.
And the topic is banished from General Discussion forums: all is right again.
What the heck does this have to do with the lore?
I didn’t ask for the thread to be banished here.
