Terminology question: What's a wall?

Hey y’all.

I see this term used around often and I’ve only been playing 20 years.

So here’s the question:

What exactly is a ‘wall’?

I mean it seems obvious. But maybe my guess is wrong.

Damage reduction.

Barkskin, Divine Protection, Enraged Regeneration, etc. “Wall” likely originates from Shield Wall, a Warrior ability that greatly reduces incoming damage by a percentage for several seconds.

But not like Divine Shield, right? That’s an immunity?

Okay I remember fighting warriors back in the day and that ability. Gotcha.

Yeah, divine shield is usually just referred to as bub or bubble. :bubbles:

Assuming you are referring to a player using a “wall”… It is generally an ability that stops or dramatically reduces damage… To the extent you are essentially “hitting a brick wall”

Some examples would be, loosely:

Warlock: Unending Resolve/Dark Pact
Paladin: Divine Shield
Mage: Iceblock
Shaman: Earthen Wall totem
Priest: Pain Suppression/Ultimate Pen

Some of those might not literally apply, but you get the idea.

Okay thank you. I think I get it now in the broad sense. Maybe there’s some underlying debate as to categories, but basically it is damage reduction.

a wall is a thing we americans construct in our homes that eventually rot away and fly off after a slight breeze in about 3 weeks after construction

I was thinking of getting one of those as a detached man cave if I end up moving back to where my house is. I’m either gonna end up back there or in D.C. from what I’m hearing so far.

Wall comes from shield wall a warrior ability from way back when. Now “wall” used for all similar % dmg reduction abilities.

Just like we call everyone’s interrupt ability “kick” now, but rogues were the only ones with it in vanilla.

Thanks Lastarria. I had forgotten about kick and yes that was a rogue ability from way back. I remember that one as well, now.

Seratox, if you have the time, build it yourself. The carpentry isn’t hard for small stuff. None of it really. End up with something solid, well build, nice to pass on to whoever takes over maintenance when your tour is done.
