TWW launched with 4 zones, not “2-3.” And all the new zones are roughly the same size as Dragonflight’s, especially when you account for all the effectively “dead” space in the Dragon Isles. 3/4 of Khaz Algar’s zones also utilize their vertical space a lot more than just about any other zones ever made.
And, yeah, we’re going to pay for each expansion in the trilogy. Just like when, for example, a trilogy of movies is announced, we still have to pay for tickets to see each of them. One could validly criticize the extra cost associated with shorter expansions over X years. If we assume the expansions are now going to be closer to 1.5 years in length instead of 2 years, we can do some basic math using recent expansion prices and end up at paying an extra $8.33 per year.
What we are being lead to believe we’re getting in return for that extra $8.33/year is a content structure that aligns with Dragonflight’s except with less content droughts either between major patches or expansions, which appears to be Blizzard’s goal by their own admission. This would mean, over the course of the saga, we actually end up with more of everything we’ve come to expect (plus whatever else they decide to surprise us with and add, such as new features, battlegrounds, modes, etc).
In fact, it’s even more than some might think because they’re only looking at it within the scope of the saga. If you look at things hypothetically and extend this beyond just the saga by adding a 13th expansion, the old release model and the new release model would line up for the first time in 4.5 years. At this point, we would have effectively gained an entire expansion’s worth of new content in the same amount of time. This is all assuming Blizzard can stay on track and deliver, which is a separate conversation.
Of course, we don’t actually know what their content rollout will actually look like. For all we know, we could get 2 regular seasons and 3rd Fated/Awakened season. If that ends up being the case, then there’s probably cause for concern. But if it’s 3 regular seasons then a new expansion, that’s perfectly acceptable in my view.
As for the content we have right now, am I mistaken in believing we actually have more of it now than we did in past launches? In addition to every zone having an event, vastly expanded sojourner achievements, and literally all the usual seasonal content being refreshed, we now also have delves, a new battleground, daily m0 lockouts, and solo-queue rated BGs.
Finally, art is subjective. I agree Hallowfall is gorgeous, but I also personally really enjoy zones like Isle of Dorn (and other similar biomes like Stormsong Valley and Mulgore) because of how peaceful they tend to be compared to the busyness and clutter of the more broad approach to modern zone design.
