I remember this too, but it shouldn’t be necessary in the Classic version since the dps increase from much more optimized raids than back then should outweigh the dps increase from drums.
Only post massive nerf’s when content got easier.
I don’t think it will be a huge deal, or at least I hope. Drums chained together is like 5% haste, which is like 5% more damage. It’s an edge, but it’s not game-breaking like stacking world buffs, which is like a 60%+ dps increase.
I think for most guilds, if someone doesn’t want to go leatherworking, they won’t get ostracized for it. I compare it to engineering in vanilla Classic. Only the sweatiest of guilds require everyone to go engineering, even though it would clearly be an advantage if everyone did.
I am mostly a min/maxer, but in some cases I try to draw the line. I’m planning on going alchemy/jewelcrafting, because I enjoy those professions and making gold with them. And both of those professions also provide a player with unique personal buffs, so they’re not worthless for raids.
I honestly hope not.
Ion was the lead of Elitist Jerks and back then they did a heck of a job optimizing comps, specs, and party makeups with an raid. They were unbelievable at theorycrafting, which is also why retail class design is so spreadsheet driven.
Vanilla to Classic, sure, EJ didn’t exist. Back in TBC, things were min/maxed. Raids were optimized, parties were, groups were shifted as Shammy Lust CDs cycled to feed the locks.
The raid encounter strats may be a bit different, but if they released and stick with unnerfed Gruul, Magtheridon, Kael, and Vash’j, there will be tears. At least I hope there are.
I wish there was a wipe scoreboard for pre-nerf boss fights that Blizz would publish that would be fun. Because my gut says that those 4 and Sunwell will be very high on the lists. I mean I saw 2 guilds fall apart on Vashj and 3 more fall apart on Kael back in the day.
Myself and my guild were ultra baddies and we made it into Sunwell pretty early. Not only were we bad on an individual level, we didn’t use drums/lusts to their full potential, and our raid comp was far from optimal.
Today’s sweaties are going to rip TBC’s raid content a new one, with or without drums. That’s okay, it’ll still be fun. I’ll take drums over world buffs any day of the week.
Not everyone raids. I don’t want you’re suggested PVE nerfs hurting my drums on panic in BGs thanks.
This is really important to remember - also Hi Meppy - I started on Khadgar in Vanilla - Fade to Black. Dabbled with Epic Weapons Vendor and Order of the Eagle before rerolling to Lightninghoof to join Reckoning. Anyway…
Yes, most guilds were min/max already the only thing that was “different” is guilds weren’t stacking locks and hunters. They had 3 locks, 3 hunters but it wasn’t like the 5-7 locks and 4 hunters people are saying we’re going to do now.
We had 3 locks/3mages in our raid comp and we got M’uru pre-nerf after MONTHS of wiping. Most of our casters were drums but most of our melee were not.
The biggest issue we had on m’uru was the mass dispells. If anyone was a nanosecond late or early it was a wipe.
Here’s where I start to doubt validity. Even in 2.3 Kaelthas and Vashj were so insanely hard for 90%+ of the guilds out there.
Most servers, even good ones, only had like 5ish guilds from both factions total clearing the content. One of the biggest issues before the vial quest was retired was finding people willing to transfer to fill raids.
People just weren’t able to clear content.
People could, and did. But a lot of the better players didn’t care to raid because PVP was a viable alternative finally. I know in my TBC guild a lot of our better players just stopped raiding and pvped full time. So they just did arena and bgs and had a ball.
Even with smaller raid teams letting us hone down selection, the quality of raider in TBC was no better than Vanilla. And in many cases worse.
Didn’t say we 1-shot them or that they were easy lol. But we did clear the content. Vashj was difficult, but not terrible…Kael was tough, and was the boss we took the longest to down.
But when I compare my TBC guild with today’s sweaties, there’s no contest.
I’ll give you an example of how bad we were by today’s standards: I MT’ed through BT and our Illidan kill. Was getting bored of it, and another guy wanted to tank. So I started to simply OT and DPS when not needed. However, hated fury/arms specs at the time and was DPS’ing as a DW Devastate spec lol. I was still top 3 DPS…that’s how bad we were and we managed to make it to Brutallus before we quit raiding.
Again, seems suspect. We were in a sweaty top guild and we still almost hit enrage on Brutallus frequently. That fight was unforgiving.
We didn’t kill Brutallus. We managed one Kalecgos, kept clearing BT, our holy pally took Illidan’s shield which made me emo enough to quit until BFA lol, which I tried and hated. AND NOW IM HERE READY TO DO IT ALL AGAIN.
The raids were harder than classic, but there was nothing we did that was too insane. My memories of TBC raiding:
- In kara Moroes was difficult at first, the little dance floor with the ghosts was actually kind of wipey at first, Aran helped identify the dumb people, and prince was only difficult because he’d gib me now and then. Nightbane was not really difficult.
- SSC sucked because I had to craft my own NR plate for hydro guy, Vashj was more technical than other fights but I remember it was mainly just people being able to kite stuff around
- The Eye was easy except for Kael, but once you learn the fight and do it a few times it’s nothing crazy
- Alot of boring gruul kills trying to get DST
- BT was actually kind of boring, and Illidan was not too difficult at all
- A lot of mote farming
- Hyjal sucked, and no one liked it except for the prot pally
In many ways the 5 man heroics could be considered more difficult than some of the raid content lol
Well at least until people started to gear up and could just aoe tank them. And sadly only 1 new dungeon was added in TBC.
We had two groups who would run people through Heroic Shattered Halls for attunements. One group had me warrior tanking it. One group had a prot pally tanking it. You know what group everyone wanted to be in.
I still have Heroic Shattered Halls PTSD to this very day.
