Tanks - design ways to get more people to tank

So currently the game seems to lack tanks.

There are a couple of key reasons:

  1. they aren’t that fun. Big number DPS will always be more fun.

  2. the pressure of tanking - people feel the pressure. Leading a group, doing pulls correctly.

  3. managing numerous offensive and defensive abilities and CDs.

Things they could do to make tanking more attractive to people.

  1. reduce the number of keybinds. Make tanks simpler to play. If it’s sinpler to play and has less keybinds people are less likely to feel the pressure of tanking and more likely to do it. Tanking doesn’t have to be complex. Tanking should be the simplest game play style in the game. My observation for the most part is that bloat of keybinds was created for the sole purpose of adding complexity that isn’t needed. (Yes some players will say omg it’s easy and I don’t disagree but in the interest of more tanks in the game they could do better - this could also result in better tank balance).

  2. bring back the ability for tanks to get attack power based on damage taken. That was great and never should’ve left the game.

Do these two things and you will see an increase in tanks.

They nerfed Vengeance because of people like you who have more posting time on GD than sense.

We already have Brewmaster, we don’t need more boring, unkillable tanks.

Yeah we do. Vengeance should make a return. Vengeance absolutely should make a return. The only people that didn’t like it was dps.

Less keybinds and pruning/merging of abilities and CDs would also lead to more consistently of tanks.

DPS not being jackasses.

I don’t want to be the leader. Tanking isnt too complicated for me, I just don’t want to be the leader.

No, it wouldn’t.

Reason being : you don’t even understand why there’s a lack of tanks in the first place. Most tanks are not even complex to play. Brewmaster, namely already being highly simple.

They can’t stop the most toxic reason for lack of tanks: Playerbase toxicity to them.

If your not pulling half the dungeon in 1 go you get kicked or a dps decides to pull for you cause “your not going fast enough for their taste”. The go-go mentality, this also forces healers out of mana and wipes the party.

Also somehow your always supposed to know the “shortcuts” recently discovered like everyone can share it mentally to each other. I didn’t know there was a shortcut in underrot to 3rd boss for a long time and most didn’t either.

Also you have to have a “leadership” type personality to be a tank, not everyone does - hence so many DPS. Your the one leading the group through a certain direction in the dungeon and you always have to know what your doing and what the group should be able to handle. Sometimes you underestimate the dps in group and wipe(or they are dumb and don’t follow mechanics), other times its ok and you got high dps and it works.

I’ve seen my fair share of primadonna tanks.

The issue is and always will be : limited spots at end game for tanks, and thus little reason to actually roll a tank. Finding a spot in a guild as a tank is a chore. Finding spot in a guild as DPS is a dime a dozen. Guilds need 2 tanks. They need upwards of 20 dps.

I wouldn’t want to tank because I would be expected to know what to pull, how much to pull, when to pull, and where to go.
For every inch of every dungeon and raid.

Oh please, having actually tanked for every expansion, in pugs, this is so not true. Tanks are as toxic towards healers/dps as healers are towards tanks/dps as dps are towards tanks/healers.

Meanwhile some tank specs have multiple defensive CD, multiple offensive abilities, multiple utility abilities when realistically half of them could be merged. If they don’t do something to make tanks more fun and at the same time less pressure to play people won’t play them. Reference brewmaster all you like but there are other tanks in this game

Not even remotely true. Even in Mythic+. Especially on the “how much” and “when”.

cough blood DK* cough* they can have migitation 24/7 up meanwhile paladins have a VERY short migitation window with 2 skills…makes no sense.

Might just be me then.
I expect the tank to know it when im in a dungeon :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, you mean some tank specs are actually good and well designed, if not limited because Shield of the Righteous being so finicky compared to Ironskin Brew.

sigh.

I think an easy way to get more tanks without messing with their skills and rotations. Tanks generally get alot of commendations so it would be quicker to get the cool mount and transmog rewards in the commendation system.

Really ? When I play my rogue I just don’t say anything, we still finish the key on time, so who cares the tank pulled 1 or 2 trash packs differently than I would have.

The thing gating me from playing my tank is the Time Gate on Essences and awful farming you have to go through to be competitive.

Make Essences alt-friendly and I’ll main a tank all the way to Shadowlands.

I didn’t mean it that way :stuck_out_tongue:
But there are optimal routes and mobs that can be avoided and of course pulling too much is a thing and so is pulling not enough
