Sylvanas isn't a "Mary Sue"

Dislike her all you want. But that’s not the definition of a Mary Sue at all.

She clearly has flaws, and as for “weaknesses,” if you choose to interpret that in a physical/combat-esque manner, well she clearly has that, as well, or she would have just killed everyone in Lordaeron & stuff, right?

I don’t like current Sylvanas either. But why improperly spread usage of a term? I see it so commonly used to describe Sylvanas.

There is literally already a thread on the front page with almost the exact same title.

Oh wow, LOL, I see it.

SORRY, I DIDN’T DO A FULL SCAN OF FRONT PAGE.

She, PHYSICALLY, with nothing but brute strength, can fling several hundred tons of Saronite at an opponent as well as take a direct hit from the same size and weight chunks without so much as a scratch.

I fail to see physical weakness anymore.

This is the same character that, in MoP’s Warcrimes book, commented that Baine was capable of crushing her effortlessly when he grabbed hold of her. That she could immediately tell a large gap in their strength but now she performs feats like what is shown in the Shadowlands opening cinematic?

One day I made a story about a girl I liked.

And I fanfared her less than Sylvanas is now.

And jaina? don’t forget that in this expansion the factions were sent by marie sue who treated us like dirty rags.

or how in wotlk she couldn’t even come close to contending with arthas as the litch king, now she just rag dolls him. and yes i am aware that this litch king is weaker, but still should be far more powerful then sylvanas.

Yes, but we all know Bolvar got screwed.

However, winning fights =/= no weaknesses =/= Mary Sue.

And see, I don’t mind that she won its how she is doing it. Instead of being tactical, instead of using the “arrows in her quiver”, IE what she has called the people she uses for her own benefit before, she instead goes in like an Anime Character and uses brute strength and powers she got out of nowhere taking on not only an army of undead AND Bolvar at the same time.

I commented on the intro cinematic and how she could have won and it would have been believable, using Dark Rangers and Nathanos as well as a repaired lantern from Legion instead of manifesting chains from nowhere. Instead it just feels absurd.

Sylvanas’ greatest strengths should be how tactical and manipulative she is, she is at her best when working from the shadows and using others to her benefit.

This new Sylvanas spits in the face of everything leading up to her in a way that makes Garrosh’s absurd approval of old god powers seem logical by comparison.

Of course not, its how she won the fight that I take issue with. I won’t speak for others but I honestly feel like the biggest problem is HOW she is winning not that she is winning her fights.

Again, she now randomly has physical strength that puts Baine and even strong Warrior’s like Saurfang to shame? That she gets hit with a literal bus sized chunk of Saronite and not even a scratch?

I get they are hyping her up being like “OOoooooh~ Look at all this power the Jailer has given her!” but its too much out of nowhere all for this whole “Rule of Cool” thing. It does not come off as cool, it comes off as over the top and unearned.

that’s exactly what i was referring to. she just completely dominates him, not by tactics or anything like that, but just because she can simply out power him, and i was like wait a second, she was never this powerful.

In my head, I believe they were aiming for the former and ended up doing the latter. Like they tried to make it… seem like she… used a “strategy” or something. But it indeed came along with some new powers, so it just muddied it up, and was overall just awful.

I think it’s simply the product of bad writing. Which DOES account for something.

I don’t believe in that, she is not dead for now, just like Jaina they were characters who only went to kick butts no matter why and when.

It is a very ridiculous part of the lore, and worse as I conclude with a N’zoth parody of Sauron.

The Varok Deads and rastakkan it was in vain, it was only an example of people who dared to challenge only because they defended their peoples and their honor.

And… This still isn’t what a Mary Sue is, lol.

Isn’t a Mary Sue also liked by everyone? If Sylvanas had been a Mary Sue, Malfurion would have said “oh well, the tree was corrupted anyway”, and Saurfang would have been an outcast for doubting her.

Anduin is the Mary Sue in this story, not Sylvanas.

a mary sue isn’t necessarily liked by everyone, but by a specific crowd. if you go into org you will see sylvanas supporters being taken out in chains. as i said in a different post, look at rey from star wars. a lot of people hate her for what she stands for, being powerful for the sake of being powerful, yet having zero training, and yet she is a mary sue.

Sylvannas is a godmodder

I don’t know if Rey is a Mary Sure, either. I’m not all caught up on my Star Wars, but she seemed more… empty/bland. I don’t think that’s a Mary Sue, either…

I don’t know if Rey has flaws/weaknesses. But I don’t know if she has assets/strengths, either. She’s like a target dummy with a lightsaber with Main Character Syndrome in a bad D&D campaign.

But that doesn’t fit the definition of a Mary Sue, either.

Maybe come up with a new term, instead of misusing an existing one.

I hope the pre-patch event/story explains how she went Super Saiyan

Ok I may not be the biggest lore buff, but isn’t she being powered by the souls of the dead ever since… Legionish / beginning of BFA? So her new power set is SLIGHTLY explained, albeit I still hate it, but it’s there.

Yeah. It’s explained. Which, as you say, doesn’t matter if it’s liked or disliked. It kind of helps further disqualify her as a Mary Sue.
