Those are the things i dislike most tbh. If they want it to be ranged then just change it back. If they want SV to be a melee spear hunter then stick to that. Make it throw spears and harpoon around hitting stuff and drop the goofy bombs and tiny crossbow they stole from outlaw.
The bombs make me think of guerrilla fighter with a pet, which at least to me sounds fine. Dropping Lacerate for Serpent Sting was kinda weird, though I would not be opposed to a mechanic where applying poison to an open wound (proc or after applying a bleed) causes it to deal more damage. The crossbow itself I wouldnāt call a bad idea since itās essentially a side arm, and having a side arm is never bad.
yea none of that fits a hunter imo which has always been a primal/nature class. they can keep the bombs and misc guns for some machinist or engineer class.
Ya I think this is one of the biggest mistakes behind making Mongoose Bite and Flanking Strike talents. Itās the reason I made it baseline in my rework. It opens up design space for talents. If Lacerate is melee it can be made more powerful than if it has a long range. I then made Serpent Sting a talent allowing you to opt into that benefit but at a cost. It is a poison, so itās not healing you, although it is slowing the enemy. It also allows you to generate focus from more spread out enemies. If serpent sting was the baseline, none of that would be possible.
As for the bombs, Iām largely fine with it especially because itās not just a circular AoE, but more of a conical splash. I imagine it more like a Molotov cocktail. I kindof wish it fit the āWildā namesake a bit better which Wildfire Infusion tries and fails to capture IMO.
Well, when melee survival was introduced, my mind went to one of those aboriginal/ānativesā armed with spears running through the forest, tracking trespassers, their animal companion at their side. We actually saw something of this with how the Frostwolf orcs had melee guys with the wolf they bonded with.
Things added to that went to that idea of a guerrilla fighter I mentioned earlier, especially the poisons. The bombs I do like, but if youād rather have something like Carve be spammable that works too, I guess.
I had a similar visual in mind but more modern than natives. More like a gritty jungle fighter. The old Mongoose Bite tooltip was great, and I actually felt like I was doing what it said while spamming it lol

Mongoose Fury increases Mongoose Bite damage by 50% for 14 sec, stacking up to 6 times. Successive attacks do not increase duration.

Theres some good ideas there still. Would love to see Butchery replace Carve baseline, and Fury of the Eagle take Butcheryās place in the talent tree.
