I know sundering is a controversial ability for some, but I think the biggest problem is it’s Boring and doesn’t have any real hooks.
Would be cool to see a choice node for both elementalist and storm builds while still doing damage and incapping for both.
Fissure - sundering now ruptures all flame shocks on targets hit causing them to take full damage from flame shocks remaining duration and refresh flameshock on all targets hit. (Or maybe this also trigger fire nova ? That would be kind of sick.)
Quake - sundering now applies the quake effect on targets causing them to take 20% bonus physical and nature damage for 8 seconds(like a conal earth spike)
I know it’s a hated ability but thematically and it being a skill shot, makes it one of my favorites to hit, sadly it’s just kind of boring with no hooks into either rotation other than, does damage.
I would prefer they remove the cc and reduce the cooldown. It has the same problem Earthquake has for elemental- because it includes a crowd control component they won’t let it be a major damage source. Earthquake does crap damage and Sundering has a long cooldown to compensate.
I say remove the crowd control from both and let them rip. Put some damage into Earthquake and drop Sundering’s cooldown to 15 seconds.
That’s cool too, it would be cool to have storm also work around short doomwinds and sundering burst windows as well. Idk there’s a lot the button can do but right now it’s sort of bleh.
I like your suggestions OP! Not sure if it’s controversial, but I appreciate the way the Aberrus tier set worked with Sundering, it’d be cool to see that added into our tree.
I think this is another ability that has kind of aged out, as most of our abilities are. I remember when this was your hardest hitting melee ability you could feel it. But now I feel like Hot hand proc or 8 Stack Lava Lash hit just as hard or harder. A few Options:
a) Give it double damage or procs to refresh (if you do procs it should lose the incap effect)
b) Offer a talent to reduce the CD and turn it into a 2 second stun instead. It should feel like our most valued melee ability since it has the longest CD.
Unrelated: This ability is a skill shot. You don’t require a target and it goes in a straight line from the ground in front of you. You can absolutely miss. So why on Azeroth can the magical ground sundering effect be Dodged or parried? This is a huge issue into Fist of Fury in PvP.
As it currently stands I actually end up never pressing it for damage.
Is it though? Demon Hunters Have Access to: Mortal Strike, 2 Stuns, an instant cast cyclone, and instant cast AoE fear, purge, self magic dispell, tons of mobility, multiple defensives, Self healing, Remove magic effects from team, two different immunities (Meta activation makes you immune to EVERYTHING while in animation, and glimpse backflip making you immune to all CC while you are in the air).
None of that is damage related, but would you consider that OP?
An effect you are describing does like 3 things at once including another ability at its full strength.
You. My understanding of your comment was “If it is OP just lower the damage” But my point was effects can be OP that dont do damage. Like in the case of yours where it does everything sunder does, I think you said spread flame shock? (could be mistaken there) but also instantly trigger the full dot damage on everyone hit and even potentially cast fire nova. All in 1 button.
So the damage portion. Refreshing it W/E since that’s literally already a button. The fire nova was a throwaway or do this if that’s not even a good amount of damage bonus.
So you think refreshing flameshock is an OP mechanic? Better nerf LL
No… You are completely missing the point Ive tried to make twice now. Take the damage part out of your mind. In 1 GCD you are doing: A micro CC, Spreading FS, Detonation FS, casting fire nova. See no damage mentioned. That seems kind of wild for a single ability to do.
Well the “or fire nova” would make it as I intended to have it interpreted be
A micro damaging CC, that detonates on flameshock damage , and refreshes it.
Or one that is a micro damaging CC that does Fire nova on it.
I am not sure how powerful that actually is. I mean it’s basically sundering as it is right now with more damaging mechanics hooked in ofc. Sundering isn’t OP now, it would only be OP after if the added flameshock damage mechanic was OP.
So it would at its core right, be an added damage mechanic you are complaining about, which is tunable.
It’s not gaining any other utility it didn’t have before just more damage baked in.
In TWW warriors can proc a mini bladestorm off of blood thirst and cold steal hot blood and enrage.
Them adding this didn’t require them to gut bladestorm, simply it will do a mini version of blade storm.
They could make the damage done on the “detonation” portion be some fraction (10%,20%, xx%) of the remaining damage.
And it be perfectly fine. It could be only refreshing the dot on active targets is necessary or it could be add a tick of the existing dot or any x interval in between and that would be fine.
… I mean, I wasn’t complaining about it. Not really a fan of the implication there, I was under the impression we were having a discussion. Playing devils advocate is more what I am doing. Just don’t think OP = Damage. Effects can be overpowered as well. Like a spammable, non dispellable crowd control that prevents all healing.
I feel like this ability is a prime candidate for pruning.
It’s a micro CC ability which in PvP micro CCs are one of the top issues currently.
For M+ we still have thunder shock and cap totem for AoE stops, so the CC of sundering is a bit redundant in the kit.
It doesn’t interact with the rest of the kit in any way. I didn’t play the season with the sundering tier set, so maybe that would make the ability fit better or feel better.
I do like the earth shattering theme of the ability and skill shot style but if they want to keep it, it should really have some more interaction with other talents or spells or at least be moved in the talent tree to present it as more of a choice instead of an easy to pick up extra ability that you just kind of feel you should take.
If you mean like why is it even in the tree, I agree it should just be baseline for enhance or prune it and bake some extra mobility into ghost wolf just for enhance.
