I did. After you posted this, you started going right against what you posted there.
You started arguing “if you’re not using a name, it should be released” which is antithetical to your quoted post.
Keep your argument straight, please.

Another idea could be a bulletin board to let people request/sell/trade names.
RMT would get involved so fast lol
Not needed if they increase the timeframe on releasing inactive account names. 4 years IS way too long for a name to sit inactive in what is still the largest MMO in the world.
Two years should be the maximum an account should be inactive before they start looking to clear names.
Just…just give people a space or a ’ to add to their name.
My opinion has not changed. Nor has my argument. Names that are not been actively used should become available. Only a fool would think “active” means “logged in every day”. If you decided that is the definition of active… well, that’s on you. Not me.
Not a terrible idea, actually. If they did this, I would hope it would alert the account holder without revealing the bnet account.
Does this mean with an active sub, or with no sub.
Again, active sub means the characters are active.
Sounds like a good way to get a bunch of free name changes.
This one please.
I could finally be Fenn instead of Fezzy.
I am referring to character activity, though I would put different time frames on what “active” means for accounts with a sub vs those without a sub.
Those time frames obviously are up for discussion, but that’s what I think is reasonable.
Then no. If I’m paying they are active. I pay my sub yearly, and I often take 2-3 month breaks from the game. Why should my rp characters get forced name changed while I’m actively paying for a sub, just because I haven’t logged in recently.
The current automated system is ok but I would be in favor of also having the option to petition for earlier releases by GM discretion. Unfortunately, I suspect they don’t want to commit man-hours to this issue.
As an aside, they really should allow for apostrophes in player character names for lore reasons.
The simplest solution would be akin to Discord’s naming system. Every name (within a realm) is assigned a string of numerical values. Ideally, these are hidden within the context of the game itself, but used to identify the specific character mechanically (& locatable for the purposes of adding as a friend, inviting to group, etc). Simple.
You mean the bnet naming system that existed for 10 years before discord was ever conceived lol
I think the names should get freed up a lot faster than they are. It’s very difficult to make a name on Illidan, for example.
2 expansions is too long of a wait. I like your ideas OP, besides the ones with stipulations for level one versus max. I think there should just be an overall shorter duration of maybe 6-12 months.
Having all of these rules overly complicates things. Just keep it simple, but what we have right now is way too long. My vote goes to 6-12 months, and I think it would probably be a more persuasive argument for everyone to go with the 12 month idea.
Yeah, I forgot that bnet has numerals. I didn’t know it was around for that long, though.
I honestly recommend Sir and Maiden names, it would easily knock to birds out of the air with one tossed stone.
Honestly I’m not sure why they don’t just let you have Name#id format names like Diablo 3. I mean the game is basically Diablo 3 now anyway. i’d rather see Jeff#9923 than Jëff. They can also just mass rename everyone with a special character in their name to an unobfuscated name#id
Why don’t we just add last names?
Legit just do a server squish down multiple dead servers to one actual server, none of this “Colmannid( )” crap where you sere the person on server but really they’re a different server.
This way when people go to log in their servers are full and active and instead of saying “omg Grok from Hellscream can’t be Grok cus there was a Grok from Blackrock too” the Grok from Hellscream can be Grok Denrock and the one from Blackrock is now Grok Blackhand and there is no weird cross server merge business.
