So question about Combat in PVP; today I saw a combat rogue in PVP and he was absolutely dominating…
How come the rest of you guys play sub when combat is that good? OR is this guy just inanely good or something?

My guess is that unlike retail, where spec > gear > skill, in classic/vanilla, skill > gear > spec. So, a good player in good gear is gonna do nasty things to people regardless of spec.
what spec a rogue plays in pvp is often decided by what gear they have.
As a rogue you generally play hemo if your gear is garbage because it revolves around finishers which are not gear dependent. Basically since they can’t kill you in a rotation they make it so they can get 2 or more.
After you get enough good gear and no longer need multiple rotations to school somebody you transition to something like combat because your throughput is silly enough to not need the multiple rotations.
After the combat transition rogues will lean toward Seal fate builds when they can push the crit soft cap to maximize your damage
So congrats on you finding a combat rogue with all the good gear i suppose? Outside of this a lot of people prefer seeing the lol large numbers from backstabs and ambushes so you will see plenty of people who roll with those specs for the lulz and not for efficiency’s sake
Playing thug pvp mace stun rogue was broken in vanilla. It lacks the pure burst of sub though.
because combat is so clunky and trash for pvp its not even funny. You have no control from being controlled and you cant efficiently stunlock
I have full NS and Viskag, so of course Im gonna blow someone up in a couple of seconds with lucky sword procs if the other guy isnt also hp stacking or fully geared. The moment a combat rogue is cc’d, they’re dead.
Combat is great in pvp, it’s just not nearly as good at 1vX as prep builds for obvious reasons. But the raw damage combat can do is unmatched and improved kick is a fantastic talent against casters. You also get improved sprint and endurance if you want. Also Riposte is absolutely fantastic vs melee. Super underrated talent.
Yeah this guys damage was absurd, I was paying attention because after I saw him delete a geared shadow priest over and over I figured something was up… I asked what build he was and he said combat.
I could not believe what I was watching, the dude straight trashed casters, melee, and it did not seem to matter…
His gear was “ok” but I would not call it great either… He was using about 50% blue gear and blue weapons, and it really worked… scary good.
I knew it was decent from vanilla but I had no idea it was god mode.
I’m pve first and I don’t want to pay to re spec so I pvp in pve daggers spec. In av i stealth around looking for drinking mages and delete them with Perds. It doesn’t matter if they have full health buddies near them I can one shot them and restealth before they can react.
I have been considering transferring my 43 rogue to a RP server from a PVP server. Do you think its worth the $25?
Depend on the server you go to.
If a Combat rogue was dominating, his opponents were pve players bored dinking around in pvp
Tons of people are bad in classic because there’s no reason to be good at pvp in classic. The ranking system revolves around something you can afk through. The BG that takes skill has no rating balance so 90% of the games are stomps one way or the other. If arena was out, people would be much better and you wouldn’t see someone stomping anyone good with combat.
Adrenaline Rush is a very powerful ability, but its 5min cooldown is prohibitively long in sustained pvp situations. The added control that Dirty Deeds, Initiative and Improved Sap give are far more powerful if you’re fighting more than 1 fight every 5 minutes.
I can see that, my alt rogue is sub. I was just surprised but his consistently ridiculous damage… The dude made contact and just deleted geared players with ease.
Maybe he was just really good, had next to no PVP rank so I don’t know… was just surprised by what I saw.
Rogue v Rogue is whoever gets the opener, less about spec.
This.
Combat does you no good against anyone except warriors. You have one rotation of cooldowns so if you get into back to back fights its unlikely youll get to do anything the second fight. Youre likely to be kited or locked down.
Combat is not good in PVP.
Isn’t a CC’d rogue dead any way regardless of build?
It’s kinda my opinion you guys are made of wet tissue paper that’s slightly less durable than what mages are made of.
CB prep is probably the most fun you can have without daggers.
Combat swords is just plain boring and ineffective in pvp (especially 1v1s)
Sub just has so many quality of life improvements … improved stealth detection. Faster stealth speed…
Overall just more fun
