I had the weirdest day yesterday. I got to leave work early and while I was heading home for a 4 day weekend I was driving in the right lane of a 2 lane county road and someone from the left lane decided they were going to just swing a right into a plaza that we were about to pass. Obviously, I t-boned them. Luckily we were only going like 30-40 mph because we were still accelerating from just having been stopped at a light but my car still got wrecked, couldn’t move it or open my own door.
Had to wait for it to be towed and then realized I had no ride home and my phone was about to die. I made a few calls around before it died but no one was available. Of course, the only numbers I have memorized are my mom and dad’s cell numbers. I ended up calling my dad from the cop’s phone but he was 2 hours away and my mom couldn’t leave work so I had no choice but to wait for my dad.
So I was walking over to Dunkin Donuts to get out of the cold while preparing myself to hang out there for 2 hours with a dead phone, hoping someone had a charger I could use. Then this car pulled up obviously having witnessed the incident and the driver asked if I needed a ride home. At first, I was hesitant because it looked like just one old man and I’m a young female who has watched way too much ID Channel… but then his wife propped her head up to smile at me.
I know it’s a bad idea to get in cars with strangers but they were just too old and I didn’t really feel any kind of fight or flight response activating in my brain once I saw both of them. I really wanted to go home after standing out in the 25-degree coldness for about an hour staring at my broken car. It didn’t matter anyway, they were both really nice and I felt comfortable with the wife chatting at me the entire 20-minute car ride to my house (we would find out that we both worked for the state government - her - in the past and - me - currently), which by the way, was the total opposite direction from both the accident and where they lived. I had asked them when I first got in if they were sure they wanted to drive all the way to my town because I didn’t have any money to give them for gas. The wife reassured me that since they were retired they had all the time in the world. In fact, they were excited about driving out this way because I live next to a naval base, the husband was ex-military and wanted to go check it out.
TLDR: I had a bad thing happen to me and the blow was lessened by having a pretty good thing happen to me all within like an hour and a half.
