The bowl of fruit is at least not pixelated. I had to squint to see breasts before. How is that good for anyone’s eyesight?
This is a very interesting article about Mickey Mouse and copyright law. There are some enlightening infographics. There is a lot about lobbying and campaign contributions tied to copyright extensions for Mickey. There’s also some hilarious underground cartoons with Mickey swearing about his sex life.

Our copyright laws are bonkers. I think the original 35 years was more than reasonable.
But I will admit having to work around IP laws to rip something off has led to some interesting ideas. Like Star Wars and Warcraft which were Flash Gordon and Warhammer Fantasy projects at first.
NGL, my inner Alex Jones suspects that Disney paid Josh Hawley to introduce this bill and frame it in this way, to make Disney appear a certain way and turn Mickey’s impending copyright expiration into a culture war issue. Thats what Disney does when Mickey is about to retire to the public domain… they dump money into congress to change the law.
Necessity is the Mother of Invention just as Curiosity is.
35 Years of Copyright would ensure Necessity and Curiosity in equal amounts since I’m quite certain businesses aren’t patient enough to wait till Copyright expires.
Fun Fact: Fashion Sense cannot be Copyrighted.
In other words, Disney has ingrained Mickey Mouse so deeply in its corporate identity that the character is essentially afforded legal protection for eternity, so long as Disney protects him (trademarks last indefinitely, so long as they are renewed).
It’s a sad truth for crusaders of the public domain: the more powerful and recognizable a piece of corporate property is (and thus, the more coveted it is by society at large), the less likely it is to be relinquished.
Very true.
That’s why I think this bill will ultimately be thrown out, but it is an interesting conversation. They are going to have to claw that mouse from Walt’s bony fingers.
I’m curious about why white, Christian Conservatives, (and I use Christian and conservative VERY loosely here) are so afraid of progressives, that they routinely introduce bills to target specific minority groups and women.
As far as the bill goes? I hope it doesn’t have enough support and people wake up to the mess these people are making. Becuase if they’re willing to go after Disney for speaking up, that means the rest of us are next
If only there was a word for fervent nationalists with a reactionary bent and a penchant for scapegoating minorities as the cause of catastrophic failures in governing.
Oh, I’m know there are a few choice descriptive words that we can use. And more than 90% of those words definitely will get us banned for using them
So I want to get off serious topics for a bit. What’s everyone’s favorite terrible comfort movie?
Mine’s Jupiter Ascending. it’s so bad, but I love the David Icke pseudo new age demonology mixed with the Matrix. This Honest trailer really does it justice. This movie has reptilians in it.
The only other thing that comes close to this is level of bad is Valerian and the City of a Thousand planets, which is also up there on my list of ridiculous movies.
Mine was Valorum…something something 9 planets. (It was a ridiculously long title for a movie)
Anyway, it was one of those movies that was bad, but good enough to keep watching. If that makes any sense
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets?! that’s my second favorite.
Yes!!! Luc Besson is such a scifi nerd. This was actually based on the french comics that inspired Star Wars. I guess this goes back to being a huge fan of The Fifth Element as a kid.
A live Gargantuan Leviathan Modded into Subnautica(dead Gargantuan Leviathan Skeleton is found in game).
This guy is big.
Imagine a couple of these things in Real Life rampaging across the ocean with other lesser Subnautica Leviathans!
Of course the only thing they’d be able to subsist on would be said lesser Subnautica Leviathans and each other.
I dont think its unique. Tribalist identity politics has split America pretty much on cultural lines. Everything is a part of the culture war. Everything is an attack on our way of life. The left treats everything typically the same way, but targeted at religious schools or gun owners. New York tried to shut down religious gatherings for covid, while allowing political rallys, protests, etc.
Josh Hawley and Desantis are unique. Im pretty sure both are jockeying for the blessing from the Don. They are both enjoying the spotlight these cultural issues are giving them. They are both talking in a way that has that Trump populist appeal. Desantis is in a State that has a large population of racist, white, former union democrat, retired baby boomers (the kind of people who called in to all the talk radio shows during the republican primaries to say “Ive voted democrat my whole life but I switched my registration this year because Donald Trump is going to save us from mexicans”) . I think its clear that Donald Trump is the republican Kingmaker as long as he’s alive, and anyone in the GOP with ambition is going to need to court him and his cult.
I dont even know how to answer this because I really liked Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. So what is terrible?
Im like “Well, maybe Zulu? No… thats critically aclaimed.”
I guess John Carter. I watch that every time its on TV. I do that with other movies, but none that are even close to as ridiculous.
Do you know that religious schools have strong ties to the triple letter racist movement? Especially in the south. Have you seen some of their school rituals? Teenage girls in bridal dresses etc, swearing to keep their virginity to their fathers?
It’s very close to cultish.
That has one of the best openings I’ve seen in science fiction. Truly the idea of a shared utilitarian universe even surpassing Rodenbury’s original Star Trek in it’s artistic expression.
The rest is. Well it’s mostly me wondering who thought Dane DeHan should be an action star.
I’m just saying if that guy owed me money I wouldn’t be worried about going to collect.
I guess Dune would also be in this same realm though I admit that I have never seen it, oh and another one is the Chronicles of Riddick series. Loved those.
I admit I’ve to read/watch Dune.
It has the LOTR, Blade Runner problem where I’m so familiar with everything that took its ideas an ran with it that I find them inadvertently basic.
Idk feels like reading a cookbook from the 60s. Groundbreaking ideas then but we’ve kinda built upon said ground already.
Though as per Luc Bason I love the 5th element.
I still don’t understand why no video game has let me use this.
Also for some reason I can picture a Draenei doing this;
Thats a pretty broad brush. And yes, Im aware of what you are talking about. That doesnt change the fact that both sides feel they are under attack and feel like the best defense is a good offense.
