Starting to Build

So I am wanting to build a CPU before next xpac on a pretty limited budget–trying to do the bang for buck thing without the latest and greatest.

Bought a G34WQC Gigabyte Curved Gaming Monitor not too long ago and goal is to get my FPS up and improve my System Controls that are all set pretty low currently.

I am a bit partial towards Gigabyte Motherboards as well, so going with AMD products and saw this on Early Access marked down and wondering peoples thoughts?

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler

I was always under assumption that you should always replace what they send with a specific CPU Cooler…and looked at:

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE CPU Air Cooler, Dual Tower 6 Heat Pipe, Dual 120mm TL-C12C PWM CPU Fan, for AMD AM4/Intel LGA 1700/1150/1151/1200, AGHP Technology, Aluminium Heatsink Cover

Is it overkill with this wraith Stealth Cooler? Should I wait and see down the line once I piece everything together to see if it is needed?

Also looking for advice on a Good/Affordable Case–or would I need to know specifically what Model for the Motherboard outside of it being Gigabyte before making that purchase.

Any advice is much appreciative.

Me personally? I prefer AIOs. I have always used as of lately the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360. It’s in my opinion the best AIO you can buy on the market without moving to water loop. In the AIO Market it’s always the top performer it’s also on the cheaper side

Since you’re on the 6 core chip you wouldn’t even need the 360 you could easily use Arctic LF II 120 or 280 and you would never see any warm temperatures whatsoever. I have the 360 on my 5950x 16 core chip and I barely go over 85° when stress testing the CPU. Gaming? I sit at around 55-60c on that bad boy.

Cooling on the CPU helps a lot but also remember the case air flow is just as important. However case airflow is extremely important if you’re using an air cooler over an AIO.

Also I want to make sure I understand your OP correctly have you already bought the CPU? If not I would hands down get the 5800x3D ove the 6 core chip. The difference in World of Warcraft is going to be night and day with overall snappiness and frame rates. When it comes to gaming the 5800x3D is on par and even in some cases Beats the new 7000 series

My only purchase at this moment was the Monitor.

I am looking at piecing something together but am really trying to keep everything on the low side for cost–I would be happy with getting 60 FPS with some decent clarity.

I was just pricing stuff out today and saw that CPU on Early Access marked down a bit and trying to make a decision before the sale expires tonight.

Can always return it, and wont arrive until Nov 2nd so I have time to hopefully piece something together.

Edit: 5800X3D Looks nice  That one is $400 and the other one is $170 is the difference–it just really starts to add up when I have not even touched on the Graphics Card yet.

Yes it is but when it performs on par with the best $800 cpu on the market in gaming and well age MUCH better? You have to ask your self is the CPU where I want to cut corners? or Can I do it elsewhere and get the better CPU?

Also DONT buy the GPU now. Wait for the 4080 Launch. Prices on 3000 series should plumet. Also consider waiting for the Raptor Lake i5? $300 for a 14 core chip is kind of hard to beat?

Yea–appreciate the help–holding off for now and giving this some thought.

I guess I have read a lot that the amount of Cores does not matter that much for WoW?

Understand there are other variables making those recommendations a much better item – but do the Cores matter that much?

EDIT: Also, not sure the Intel stuff will work with the Free Sync the monitor uses or is that just a non issue.

And would you recommend the 3D versus the higher Cores the i5 Offers?

Need to see i5 vs 5800x3d gaming test to comment. We wont know till raptor lake launch

Wait till next week and see how Intel Raptor Lake performs. 100% it will be faster than 5600X.

Really want to thank you for pointing out the 5800x3d–can only find good things here and everywhere about this item. Have set price alerts where I can and think this is a no brainer due to the caching.

Next question is this now–Motherboard. In my original post I talked about leaning towards Gigabyte and I do like them as a company–but I am not 100% stuck on them.

Any suggestions with using that CPU and a Motherboard that wont restrict me to using only Windows 10 if I upgrade around it way down the line?

And I looked and it seems my Monitor is not on the list for NVIDIA supported for FreeSync so it would be a guessing game if it would work (read some people it just works for them)–so I am again leaning towards a Radeon Graphics Card but trying to put together my ‘watch’ list for the next month or so…

I wouldn’t even worry about brands. Find a board with features you like vs going for a specific brand. To me, proper USB and other board headers are what I look for. As long as you’re buying a 550 and up, upgrading to windows 10 shouldn’t be an issue.

As far as G-sync and free sync goes, I’ve never noticed a difference when I had it on vs when I didn’t. I think it’s a gimmick, but that’s just my opinion.

I use Windows 10 already–just that a few boards that I looked at would not take Windows 11…

Would prefer that I get as much longevity as possible from it and I ran into this issue over a decade ago when the Motherboard I bought would only take like Windows XP or something like that…

After experiencing Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master Rev 1.0 and Z690i Aorus Ultra DDR4, I would advise avoiding Gigabyte boards for now. Unless you don’t tweak, they are fine.

My Asus ROG Strix Z690-A D4 and Asus Prime Z690M-Plus D4 is happy with Windows 11 22H2.

This. Also they’re insane PR and customer support issues are a problem too. I am just not a fan of the company in general.

I’ve sworn by ROG products for quite a while and they have not failed me yet

Good info–the only other system I built had a Gigabyte Motherboad and that system still works (I dont even have it plugged in) and worked for over 10 years…Love my Gigabyte monitor but the more I look at the Motherboards, the more I am leaning to this advice…

Guess I need to look into something with PCIe 5.0 too so I dont restrict anything.

Unless you are getting a 4090 with a Ryzen 7950 you wont even touch or need PCIE 5.0 ANYTHIME SOON. Its purely a placebo at this point unless you a build an enthusiast rig. If you are wanting that? Just wait for the Raptor Lake i5. I5 13600K with 44mb cache 14 core 20 thread cpu with a MSRP of roughly $300 :ok_hand:

There is a plethora of 3000 series GPUs. Their price will plummet when the 4080 Launches. So again wait on a GPU till about a week after that. Or just geta 3000 series FE from BestBuy.

In wow the 13600K is going to be on par or better than the 5800x3D. Due to having more game cache on the 5800x3D its hard to say

Kinda hoping after the release of the Raptor Lake that the 5800X3D will price drop … wishful thinking.

Thanks for all the help–and I am holding off to see how it all shakes down.

Doubtful its been outselling 7000 series lol

Smart move!

Doubtful. Its been out selling 7000 series lol Its a cheaper platform and due to the game cache on the 5800x3D? It out performs the 7000 series in some CPU heavy games like wow lol

AMD has a problem. Its AMD

it’s hard to recommend 5800x3d unless you already have the motherboard that already supports it… but i’m guessing you already have, since you are looking at the 5600x

what is your current specs? i’m asking because AM4 is in the end of life phase, so to future proof you do need to upgrade to the next gen stuff, which means lots of $$

Hes doing a budget build man. The word Budget does not exist in AM5 platform or intel’s newest platform. Its also not hard to recommend it at all. It will be another 2 years before DDR5 is mainstream. Same if not longer for PCIE 5.0

Lastly just because they are no longer releasing AM4 chips is fine. If you look at my video above? Its out performing both Ryzen 7000 series and Alder Lake. Even intels best $800 Cpu! Its currently hands down the best gaming CPU ever made.

So until something better comes along for pure gaming? Its the best on the market currently. In other words it WILL last him. Once you factor in B550 motherboard prices? DD4 prices? The 5800x3D is hands down the best CPU for his buck atm. Especially if hes going to upgrade again in 2 years.

Get this “dead platform” ideals out of your head. Its marketing mumbo jumbo and you are falling for it. Like Joe Friday says “Just the Facts mam”. The Facts say its still the best gaming cpu on the market. Even better than 7000 series. Once again this is speaking in terms of a gaming rig only. Other people obviously agree with this. Its why the 5800x3D is still out selling the new 7000 series on both Amazon and new egg for people doing gaming rigs. Many videos out talking about this.

The ONLY platform that has any life left in it? Is AM5. This is the end of the road for intel too. But once again thats not something to focus on. Its marketing BS unless hes doing an Enthusiast build. Which hes not

Are you going to do anything else other than gaming? Heavy apps still favors more core. i5-13600K will make more sense than 5600X or 5800X3D.
