There 100% were add ons that parsed the combat log and announced things based on that. There were also 100% add ons that facilitated targeting players.

Damage meters are not Spy. Also, you don’t have to argue that Damage Meters do the same thing Spy does to argue Spy being in Classic.

Literally programmers enjoy solving these problems for the sheer joy of it.
All the little things automated add up. With enough of them I can focus on making decisions about potions, trying to force reckoning procs, seal twisting etc. The more things I extrapolate away and automate, the more room I leave for myself for more complicated stuff.
Generating a list isnt playing the game and making your character perform actions

Actually, it doesn’t automate /t or /tar.
In order to target someone you actually have to manually click on the frame the addon creates. Nice try, though.

Spy has not been around since vanilla wtf are ppl saying? Blizz was a lot more strict back in the day they even banned addons that allowed you to view other ppls gear (your enemy faction). There is no way in hell they would have allowed an addon like spy to exist.

Im not saying they banned all macros/addons, just saying they even banned aone that let you watch ppls gear. And there is ppl claiming spy existed in vanilla. It did not and if it did it sure as hell did not live a long time.
It probably did exist in friend circles, it’s not that hard to create an addon to read from the combat log
people just did things differently back then though, they would just set up their combat log and read from it, no spy needed but same result
Nobody does that and its not even remotely at the convenience of what spy does for you. Im not grandstanding here, I use it myself with ph2 and the honor farm but atleast I can admit that its absolutely changing the pvp dynamic and it probably is harmful to the overal game experience.
I just hate that some people try to justify it like its no big deal… it is. Use it with a priest. Everytime spy pops up all you have to do is Mind vision and now you even know where the dude is exactly at. Not to mention that spy even gives you coordinates of the original call out.
Just stop saying its fine, its not.
People do watch the combat log though, properly set up it’s really easy
and with it you can mind vision that guy anyway, it’s not really doing anything you can’t without it, it’s just providing the info in a different way
and i shudder to think of all the addons they’d break breaking it

Even if you watch the combat log, you do not have coordinates, which spy gladly provides. And watching the combat log while doing stuff is a lot more easy to forget or overlook than an automated addon that crys out.
spy gives you your coordinates unless you select the person
and yes, it provides you with information in a better format
